Where to look depends on how you took the screenshot: a saved image is usually in File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots, while an image you copied may still be in Clipboard history. Start with the method you used, then search your PC if you cannot find the file. Clipboard history is temporary, so it is not a complete record of every screenshot.

Find screenshots saved with Windows + Print Screen

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select Pictures in the navigation pane.
  3. Open Screenshots.

Microsoft documents Pictures > Screenshots as the location for captures made with the Windows logo key + PrtScn. On a keyboard without a PrtScn key, Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative. You can also open the folder directly from File Explorer by navigating through Pictures.

This is the first place to check, not a guarantee. The Pictures folder may have been moved, the screenshot may have been taken with another tool, or Snipping Tool may have a different save location configured. If the folder is empty, continue with the sections below rather than assuming the screenshot is gone.

Check Snipping Tool captures and save settings

Search for Snipping Tool from Start to open it. To start a new capture, press Windows logo key + Shift + S; this opens the capture overlay. A capture made with Snipping Tool is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder by default, according to Microsoft, but that behavior and the default folder can be changed in the app’s Settings.

If the capture is still open

Use Save or Save as in Snipping Tool to store a copy where you can find it. Choose a folder you recognize, such as Pictures or a project folder. Saving an open capture is different from retrieving a capture that was never saved and is no longer open.

If Snipping Tool’s folder is empty

Open Snipping Tool and inspect its Settings for the automatic-save option and the default Screenshots folder. If automatic saving was disabled, or the folder was changed, look in the location shown there. The exact settings labels can vary with Windows and app updates; use the setting descriptions rather than expecting one particular wording on every PC.

Also consider whether you only copied the capture. A screenshot made with the overlay may have been copied to the clipboard without leaving a saved image file in the folder you expected. Check Clipboard history next.

Recover a copied screenshot from Clipboard history

  1. Press Windows logo key + V.
  2. If Windows asks you to enable Clipboard history, select Turn on.
  3. Look through the available entries for the image you copied.

This works only if Clipboard history was enabled before the screenshot was copied and the item has not been removed. Turning it on now does not restore entries from before it was enabled. Microsoft says Clipboard history holds up to 25 copied entries; as new entries arrive, older unpinned ones are removed. History is cleared when the PC restarts, except for pinned items. It is therefore a temporary recovery option, not an archive of all screenshots.

Keep or remove a clipboard entry

Clipboard entries can be pinned or deleted, and Windows also provides a clear-all option. Pin an entry you need to keep available through a restart, but do not treat that as a substitute for saving the image as a file. If you no longer need a sensitive image in history, remove it or use clear all.

Clipboard sync is a separate setting from local Clipboard history. Microsoft describes sync as tied to a Microsoft or work account. Before enabling it, consider that copied content may be shared across devices associated with that account; use the account and Windows settings that match your privacy needs.

Search File Explorer when the location is unknown

If Pictures > Screenshots is empty or you do not know which capture method you used, search from File Explorer. You can search from Home, from a likely folder, or from This PC. Try words such as screenshot or screen, and inspect likely image files in the results. Names can vary by capture method and user settings, so there is no single filename pattern to rely on.

Choose the search scope

  • Search a likely folder when you know where you usually save images. This narrows the search to that folder.
  • Search This PC if you do not know where the file is. Microsoft notes that searching This PC can take longer but is more in-depth than searching a selected folder.
  • Search Home if you want to begin from File Explorer’s general starting point, then widen the search if needed.

Searches are only as useful as their scope and terms. If searching a specific folder produces nothing, repeat from This PC. If you remember a project or folder name, search there too; a screenshot may have been saved in a work folder rather than the standard Screenshots folder. Avoid relying on one exact filename, because naming conventions are not universal.

Understand what Windows can and cannot show as screenshot history

Where the image may be What to try What limits recovery
Saved screenshot file Check Pictures > Screenshots, Snipping Tool’s configured folder, then File Explorer search. The folder may have moved, or the image may have been saved elsewhere.
Copied screenshot Press Windows + V and inspect Clipboard history. History must have been enabled; it holds up to 25 entries, older unpinned entries are removed as new ones arrive, and restart clears history except pinned items.
Windows Recall snapshot On a supported Windows 11 AI+ PC, check Recall if it was enabled and configured to capture the relevant activity. Recall is opt-in and device-limited; it is not a universal screenshot folder.

Recall is separate from ordinary screenshots

Windows 11 Recall is an opt-in feature for saving and searching snapshots of activity on supported Windows 11 AI+ PCs. Microsoft says snapshots and related contextual information are encrypted and saved to the local drive. Users can control which apps and sites are captured and can delete snapshots, pause capture, or turn saving off. Recall should not be confused with the Pictures > Screenshots folder, and it will not help on a device that does not support it or where it was not enabled.

Windows activity history is different again: Microsoft describes it as information about apps and services used, files opened, and websites browsed. It should not be relied on to recover screenshot images.

Troubleshoot a screenshot you still cannot find

The Screenshots folder is empty

  • Confirm which method you used: Windows + PrtScn, Snipping Tool, or copying a capture.
  • For Snipping Tool, inspect its automatic-save setting and configured folder.
  • If you copied the image, try Windows + V, bearing in mind that history may not have been enabled or the entry may have been cleared.
  • Search This PC in File Explorer using terms such as “screenshot” or “screen.”

Windows + V shows no image

If Windows offers to turn Clipboard history on, the feature was not enabled for this use. Enabling it starts history going forward; it does not recover older clipboard contents. If history is already on but the image is missing, it may have aged out, been deleted or cleared, or been removed when the PC restarted. Search for a saved file instead.

You found the capture in Snipping Tool but not in a folder

Use Save or Save as while the capture is open, then note the destination. For future captures, check the automatic-save behavior and default Screenshots folder in Settings so the app’s storage behavior matches what you expect.

Search returns too many results or none

Start with a likely folder if you know where the image may have been saved. If that search is empty, expand to This PC. Try both “screenshot” and “screen,” and examine plausible image results instead of assuming every capture follows the same naming pattern. A search cannot recover an item that was never saved as a file and is no longer in Clipboard history.

For future website captures: Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a way to retrieve screenshots already saved on your Windows PC. If your goal is to capture web pages going forward, one GET request can return an image or PDF. The example below saves a screenshot of a web page as WebP; replace the sample target URL with the page you want to capture.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo for the service details.
