Microsoft Edge does not provide a documented “export this SVG file as PNG” command. If you only need an image of the SVG as it appears in the browser, use Edge’s Screenshot tool. If you need a specific PNG size, transparent background, repeatable rendering, or batch conversion, open the SVG in Inkscape or render it with ImageMagick instead.
Choose between a screenshot and a real conversion
SVG is a vector format: its paths and shapes can be rendered at different sizes without a fixed pixel grid. PNG is a raster format: the renderer must choose exact pixel dimensions and background behavior. That difference matters when you convert.
| Method | Best for | Control over dimensions | Repeatability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edge Screenshot | A quick image of the rendered view | Limited to the capture area and displayed scale | Low |
| Inkscape export | Controlled single-file or batch export | Explicit export settings | High |
| ImageMagick | Scripts and automated pipelines | Size, resolution and background options | High, subject to the configured SVG renderer |
A screenshot can include page surroundings, browser-rendered layout, or only the selected region. It is not a source-level conversion and should not be used when you need a guaranteed canvas size or transparent output.
Save the rendered SVG with Microsoft Edge Screenshot
Use this route when the visible result is what you need—for example, a one-off reference image or a quick share.

- Open the SVG in Microsoft Edge. You can drag the file into a tab or use Ctrl+O to open it.
- Open Screenshot from the page’s right-click menu, the Edge Settings menu, or press Ctrl+Shift+S. Microsoft’s interface and feature availability can vary by device, market and browser version.
- Choose a full-page capture or select an area around the rendered SVG. For an SVG displayed on a plain page, a selected-area capture usually avoids extra page content.
- Use the overlay controls to copy or save the capture to your files.
Microsoft documents the copy and save workflow, but does not promise one universal saved file extension or a source-level SVG export. Check the resulting file before using it in a pipeline. If the output must be PNG at a defined size, use one of the export methods below.
Improve a browser capture
- Resize the Edge window and zoom the page before capturing if you need a larger or smaller rendered image.
- Select only the artwork, leaving out browser chrome and unrelated page margins.
- Use a dedicated exporter when antialiasing, exact dimensions, transparency or repeatability are important.
Export SVG to PNG with Inkscape
Inkscape is the most direct choice when you want to inspect the artwork and deliberately set its export area and pixel dimensions. Open the SVG in Inkscape, select the appropriate artwork or page export area, set the desired width or height in pixels, and export as PNG. Exact GUI labels can differ between Inkscape releases, so use the export panel and the help supplied with your installed version.
Command-line export
For repeatable jobs, Inkscape’s command-line documentation includes this example:
inkscape --export-type=png --export-filename=- my_file.svg
The command writes PNG data to standard output. Redirect it to a file when needed:
inkscape --export-type=png --export-filename=- my_file.svg > my_file.png
Alternatively, provide an output filename directly according to the syntax supported by your installed version. Inkscape can generate an output filename in export mode; if you need to replace an existing file, check the version’s command help for the overwrite option rather than assuming a particular flag.
Check the export
- Open the PNG and verify that all artwork is present.
- Inspect pixel dimensions with your image viewer or processing tool.
- Check whether transparent areas stayed transparent or were rendered against a solid background.
- For files using external fonts, images or linked resources, confirm those resources are available to Inkscape.
Convert SVG to PNG with ImageMagick
ImageMagick can read SVG and write PNG, making it useful in scripts and build systems. Its SVG result depends on the renderer available to ImageMagick. The documented preference is Inkscape when it is available in the execution path, then RSVG, then the internal MSVG renderer.

Basic conversion
magick input.svg output.png
On older installations the executable may be named convert instead of magick. Use the command name supplied by your installed ImageMagick version.
Set a maximum size
magick -size 1600x1600 input.svg output.png
ImageMagick documents -size as a maximum width and height setting. Its documentation also warns that this option is ignored by the Inkscape renderer because of an Inkscape-side limitation. If the dimensions do not change as expected, identify which renderer is active or use Inkscape’s export controls directly.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPreserve a transparent background
magick -background none input.svg output.png
Verify the resulting PNG: an SVG may contain an explicit background rectangle, and that artwork will remain opaque even when the renderer background is set to none.
Resolution and renderer differences
ImageMagick’s documented SVG default is 96 dpi. DPI affects how physical units are interpreted; pixel dimensions and the SVG’s own width, height and viewBox also influence the result. The same command can produce different output on two machines if one uses Inkscape and the other uses RSVG or MSVG. For dependable automation, standardize the installed renderer and record the ImageMagick and renderer versions.
Security considerations
Only enable options that permit entity substitution, huge SVG parsing or embedded-SVG handling for files you trust. Those settings can expand resource use or process embedded content. For untrusted uploads, keep ImageMagick’s default security policy and isolate conversion in an appropriate service.
Which method should you use?
- Need an image immediately and do not care about exact pixels: Edge Screenshot.
- Need a logo at a specified pixel width, clean margins or a transparent canvas: Inkscape export.
- Need hundreds of files in a script: ImageMagick or Inkscape command-line export, with a pinned rendering environment.
- Need the browser’s exact appearance, including CSS or layout: capture the rendered page rather than converting the raw SVG.
Common problems and fixes
The screenshot includes the page or browser surroundings
Use Edge’s selected-area capture and draw tightly around the artwork. If precise cropping is still difficult, export the SVG with Inkscape or ImageMagick.

The PNG is blurry
A screenshot is limited by the displayed capture size. Increase the rendered size before capturing, or export directly at the target pixel dimensions. Do not enlarge a small PNG and expect vector-quality detail.
The background is white instead of transparent
Use ImageMagick’s -background none, then inspect the PNG’s alpha channel. Also check the SVG for a background rectangle. A browser screenshot normally captures the page background rather than preserving SVG transparency as a file property.
Fonts or external images are missing
The renderer must be able to access the referenced fonts and resources. Install the required fonts, use accessible local or absolute resource paths, and test the export on the same machine or container used in production.
ImageMagick output dimensions are unexpected
Review the SVG’s width, height and viewBox, the 96 dpi default, and the active renderer. Remember that -size may be ignored when Inkscape is the renderer. For explicit dimensions, use Inkscape’s export settings or its command-line options documented for your installed release.

The SVG opens in Edge but does not export correctly
Edge may display an SVG using browser features that a standalone renderer does not reproduce, such as external CSS, JavaScript, network-loaded assets or browser-specific fonts. Save all required resources locally where possible, then compare an Inkscape and ImageMagick render. If the SVG is interactive, a capture of the browser state may be the only way to reproduce that view.
Can I just rename .svg to .png?
No. Renaming changes the filename, not the file format. A PNG must be rendered from the SVG’s vector instructions.

Does Edge’s SVG clipboard support convert SVG to PNG?
No. Microsoft’s Edge 124 announcement concerns SVG data support in the Async Clipboard API for copying and pasting. It is not a PNG export tool.
Which tool gives the most consistent output?
A pinned Inkscape or ImageMagick environment is more repeatable than a browser capture. ImageMagick consistency also requires keeping its SVG renderer and configuration consistent.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Edge directly export an opened SVG as PNG?
Edge documents Screenshot capture, not a source-level SVG-to-PNG export command. Use Screenshot for a rendered view or Inkscape/ImageMagick for controlled conversion.
Why does the same SVG look different in different converters?
Standalone tools may use different SVG renderers, fonts, resource paths and defaults. ImageMagick can use Inkscape, RSVG or MSVG, so standardize the rendering environment for repeatable results.

Is ScreenshotNeo suitable for a local SVG file?
ScreenshotNeo captures URLs. It is useful for public web pages and rendered web content; for a local SVG file, use Edge, Inkscape or ImageMagick.
The Bottom Line
Use Edge Screenshot for a quick picture of what you see. Use Inkscape or ImageMagick when the PNG’s dimensions, transparency and repeatability matter.
