To make a JPG, capture the page as an image and export it as JPG, or use a capture tool that offers JPG output. For automation, Chrome Headless saves screenshots as PNG, so add a PNG-to-JPG conversion step.
Choose the right way to turn Chrome content into a JPG
First decide what you need in the image: only what is visible in the browser window, a complete long webpage, or a repeatable capture for a script. The choice matters because saving a page, printing it, and taking a screenshot produce different kinds of files.

Capture the visible part of a webpage
For a one-off image, use your operating system’s screenshot utility or a browser capture utility to capture the visible page area. The precise keys and interface depend on your operating system and screenshot application. If the result is PNG, open it in an image editor or converter and export it as JPG.
- Open the page in Chrome and adjust the browser window to show the content you want.
- Take a screenshot of the visible area using your device’s screenshot utility.
- Open the resulting image in an editor or converter.
- Choose Save As or Export, select JPG/JPEG, and save a new copy.
- Open the saved JPG and check that text and edges remain legible.
JPG is a lossy format: exporting a screenshot as JPG can soften fine text or introduce compression artifacts. If you need crisp text, transparent pixels, or subsequent editing, keep the original PNG as well. Use a high-quality JPG export setting where your converter offers one.

Capture a full webpage as JPG
Chrome’s ordinary screenshot captures the visible viewport, not necessarily the entire scrollable page. For a full-page image, choose an extension or capture tool that explicitly supports full-page capture and JPG export. Check the current Chrome Web Store listing for the capture scope, output formats, permissions, and recent maintenance details before installing.
Extension options
The GoFullPage Chrome Web Store changelog says version 3.7 added downloading as PNG or JPG in an entry dated March 20, 2018. The listing’s history and current behavior may have changed, so verify that the current version still offers the format and full-page behavior you need.
The Chrome Web Store listing for Webpage to HD Image describes capture of webpages and local HTML files with JPG, PNG, TIFF, WebP, BMP, and SVG output. The listing displayed version 1.1.6 and an update date of February 27, 2026, and names GrabzIt Limited as the developer. These are listing details and vendor claims, not an independent test; check the live listing before relying on them.

Check the result, especially on dynamic pages
A long page may load images only as you scroll, or insert content after a delay. A capture taken too early can omit those sections. After capturing, inspect the entire image rather than assuming that a tool captured every element correctly. If content is absent, let the page finish loading or use a capture method that handles scroll-loaded content, then capture again.

Save a Chrome webpage as HTML or MHTML—not JPG
Chrome’s Save Page As workflow saves webpage files; it is not an image export. On a computer, Google’s instructions place it under More > More Tools > Save Page As. You can also use Chrome’s page capture extension API, which requires the pageCapture permission and saves a tab as MHTML, an archive containing the page and its resources. Neither workflow is documented as a JPG export. If the file you saved ends in .html or .mhtml, you saved or archived the page rather than capturing it as an image. Convert an HTML file or URL with Chrome Headless
Chrome Headless can render a URL or local HTML file and save a screenshot. Its documented --screenshot output is PNG; --print-to-pdf produces PDF. Convert the PNG afterward if JPG is required. The documented --timeout option sets a maximum wait before capture even if the page is still loading. A timeout is not proof that all dynamic content has finished rendering, so inspect the result.
With Chrome installed and available as chrome on your command line, capture a URL like this:
chrome --headless --screenshot=shot.png --timeout=10000 https://example.comReplace https://example.com with the target page. To capture a local file, provide its file URL, for example:

chrome --headless --screenshot=shot.png --timeout=10000 file:///absolute/path/to/page.htmlUse an absolute path appropriate to your operating system. If the local HTML references local stylesheets, fonts, or images, confirm that the browser can access those resources; missing assets can make the screenshot differ from the page as intended.
Convert the PNG to JPG
Use an image editor or converter that can open PNG and export JPG. The exact interface and command depend on the converter you choose. Keep the PNG if you may need a lossless original. If the PNG includes transparency, JPG cannot preserve it; choose a background color during export or use a format that supports transparency instead.
Print to PDF when pages should be paginated
For a document-style result, Chrome’s print interface can save a page as PDF. Open print with Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac, then choose a PDF destination such as Save as PDF where available. Convert the resulting PDF page or pages to JPG with a PDF/image converter. This route is useful when page breaks are desirable, but it can alter the continuous layout of a screenshot. Automate rendering with Browsershot
For developer workflows, Spatie’s Browsershot README describes rendering a URL, HTML string, or local HTML file to an image or PDF through Puppeteer running headless Chrome. It is a library-based approach rather than a one-click Chrome instruction. When using any automated renderer, plan for page readiness rather than assuming one fixed wait works for every site. Pages can use delayed scripts, lazy-loaded images, or content that depends on interaction. Capture, inspect the image, and adjust the wait or page preparation for the site in question.

Troubleshoot common JPG conversion problems
- The saved file is HTML or MHTML. You used Save Page As or the pageCapture archive workflow. Take a screenshot or use a capture tool that exports an image.
- Chrome Headless saved PNG instead of JPG. That is its documented
--screenshotoutput. Convert the PNG to JPG with an image editor or converter. - The full-page image is missing sections. The page may have loaded content only during scrolling, or capture may have started before content was ready. Adjust the page-loading or capture approach and inspect the result.
- The local HTML looks unstyled or images are missing. Check that referenced files exist and that Chrome can access them from the local file URL.
- Text looks blurry in JPG. JPG compression can affect fine edges. Export at a higher quality setting or retain and use the PNG when lossless text edges matter.
- Transparent areas turn solid or look wrong. JPG does not support transparency. Choose a background color when converting, or keep a transparency-capable format.
- An extension does not offer the expected output or scope. Check its current listing, version, permissions, and supported formats; listings and features can change.
