Run a browser automation process on the server that should take the screenshot. Have it open the target website, wait for the page to reach the state you need, then save the screenshot to a file or handle the returned image bytes. With Playwright, the core steps are page.goto() and page.screenshot(); the official Playwright Page API documentation shows this workflow.
“On another server” describes where the browser runs, not a special screenshot feature: the server needs a configured browser runtime, permission to write or transmit the result, and network access to the target site. What “on another server” means
The machine running the browser does not have to be your laptop or the server hosting the target website. A process on a separate server can navigate to a public URL and capture what its browser renders. The image is initially available to that process; making it available to a user or another service is a separate step, such as writing it to storage or transmitting the bytes.
This is useful for scheduled captures, monitoring, reports, or a service that accepts a URL and returns an image. It is not the same as taking a screenshot of the server’s desktop: browser automation captures a web page rendered by a browser, rather than an arbitrary screen on the remote machine.

The Playwright documentation establishes the navigation-and-capture workflow, but it is not a deployment guide. Browser installation, operating-system dependencies, permissions, network access, and delivery of the resulting image must be handled for your particular server.
Choose what the screenshot should contain

Decide the output as well. A screenshot can be saved to a path on the capture server, or its image data can be retained as a buffer for processing or transmission. PNG, JPEG, and WebP are supported by the screenshot tooling documentation; options and exact availability can depend on the API or tool version you use. Device-pixel scaling can affect resolution and image size, so verify the settings for your installed version.
Run the capture with Playwright
The minimal workflow is to open a page, navigate to the URL, and call the screenshot method. The following is a Node.js example; it assumes Playwright and its browser runtime are already installed and configured on the server.

The path is interpreted by the process running the browser: screenshot.png is written relative to that process’s working directory, not automatically downloaded to your computer. Use a suitable absolute path if your service needs a predictable location, and ensure the process can write there.
The code uses a 1440-by-900 viewport as an example configuration, not a recommended size for every site. Adjust it to match the page layout you want to inspect. The Playwright API’s documented example demonstrates navigation followed by page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' }); this server-side sample applies that workflow, while the browser installation and server prerequisites remain environment-specific.

Capture the visible viewport
The sample’s screenshot call captures the current browser view. Set the viewport when creating the page so the website is rendered at the dimensions you intend. A different viewport can change responsive layouts, so use the dimensions that make sense for the result you need.
Capture the full scrollable page
For a full-page image, pass the full-page option:

Long pages can create large, tall images; consider whether one image is practical for the intended storage or display. Do not combine this with an element-targeted screenshot when using the documented screenshot tool behavior.
Capture one element
Use a locator for the element you want and take its screenshot:

If the selector does not match, or the element is not present in the rendered page, the capture cannot produce the intended element image. Element capture is a different scope from full-page capture.
Use image bytes instead of a file

If you do specify a path, the screenshot is written to that path; if you need both a file and further processing, choose an explicit storage and data-handling approach for your application.
Prepare the server and deliver the image
- Choose the capture host. Run the automation where it can reach the target URL and where you can install and operate the required browser runtime.
- Install and configure Playwright and its browser. Follow the installation instructions appropriate to your runtime and operating system. The Page API reference cited here does not specify server installation commands or system dependencies, so do not assume a command or package list applies to every server.
- Run a small test capture. Start with a page you can access and verify that the process launches the browser, completes navigation, and creates the expected image.
- Choose storage or response behavior. Save to a writable server path for a file-based workflow, or use the returned buffer if your application will process or transmit the image.
- Check the result from the consumer’s point of view. Confirm that the intended person or service can actually access the saved file or receive the bytes. A successful screenshot call alone does not configure image hosting or delivery.
For a recurring capture service, also decide how it handles target URLs, browser lifecycle, output naming, and failures. These are application decisions rather than guarantees made by the screenshot call. In particular, a URL may be reachable from your workstation but not from the server, and an automated browser may not render every site successfully.

Wait for the right page state
A navigation completing does not necessarily mean every element you care about is ready. If the screenshot must include a particular component, wait for that selector before capturing. If the page needs a fixed delay or another readiness condition, choose one deliberately and account for it in your service. There is no universal wait that guarantees every website has finished rendering.
Format and resolution
Playwright screenshot tooling documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP formats, along with device-pixel scaling. Select a format supported by the API you are using and appropriate for the next consumer. Larger device-pixel captures can produce larger images; verify the exact options for the version installed on the capture server rather than assuming settings are identical across tools or versions.
Screenshot the page you actually intend to see
Websites can vary their layout based on viewport and other browser conditions. If a server-side capture looks different from what a person sees, first compare the viewport and page state. The screenshot represents what the configured browser rendered from its network location; it is not necessarily identical to a user’s browser session.

- The browser will not launch: Check that the browser runtime is installed and configured for the server’s operating system, and that the process has the permissions it needs. The cited Page API documentation does not establish server dependencies; follow the setup guidance for your actual environment.
- Navigation times out or the page is blank: Confirm that the capture host can reach the target URL and that the address is correct. A site may behave differently for an automated browser or from the server’s network location. The cited documentation does not guarantee that every target will load.
- The image file is missing: Check the path relative to the process’s working directory, and confirm that the process can write to the chosen location. A relative path is on the capture server, not your local machine.
- The screenshot cuts off content: Check whether you captured only the viewport. Use full-page capture for scrollable content, or target an element if only one component is needed.
- The image is the wrong size or format: Verify the viewport, format, and device-pixel scaling options against the installed Playwright version. Higher device-pixel scaling can increase image dimensions and file size.
- The element image is absent or wrong: Verify that the selector matches the intended element and that it is present when the screenshot runs. Wait for the element when page rendering is asynchronous.
- The image exists but your application cannot use it: Decide whether the application needs a file path or image bytes, then add the relevant delivery or storage behavior. A screenshot call does not publish the resulting file for other machines.
Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
A self-hosted browser gives you control over where the process runs and how the output is handled, but you are responsible for its runtime, dependencies, permissions, network path, and failure handling. Measure the behavior of your own workload before setting service expectations: the cited Playwright documentation does not provide a server performance benchmark or a guarantee that arbitrary websites will load.
Capture scope and resolution affect the amount of image data produced. Full-page captures can be much taller than viewport captures, and higher device-pixel scaling can yield larger images. Those choices matter if your service stores many captures or transmits them frequently; select settings based on what the consumer needs rather than maximizing dimensions by default.

Does the target website have to be hosted on the capture server?
No. The automation process runs on the capture server and navigates to the target URL. The target website can be hosted elsewhere, provided the capture server can access it.
Can I capture a page that requires a login?
The cited Playwright material establishes navigation and screenshot behavior, not a particular site’s authentication requirements or a login workflow. Whether an authenticated capture works depends on how that site handles access and how you configure the browser session.
Will the screenshot always match what I see in my own browser?
Not necessarily. The capture reflects the browser’s configured viewport and the page as rendered from the capture server. Different browser conditions or network access can produce a different result.
