To capture an entire webpage in desktop Chrome, open the page, launch DevTools, open the Command Menu, search for screenshot, and select Capture full size screenshot. Chrome renders content below the visible viewport and downloads a PNG to your normal download folder.

Use Chrome’s built-in full-page screenshot command

Chrome DevTools can capture the whole rendered, scrollable page, including content that is not currently visible in the viewport. You do not need an extension or a separate screen-recording tool.

  1. Open the page. Navigate to the webpage you want to save and wait for its visible content to finish loading.
  2. Open DevTools. Press Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux, or Command+Option+I on macOS. You can also right-click the page and choose Inspect.
  3. Open the Command Menu. Press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+P on macOS.
  4. Find the screenshot command. Type screenshot into the Command Menu.
  5. Capture the page. Select Capture full size screenshot. Chrome creates a tall PNG containing the page below the fold and downloads it to the browser’s configured download location.

Google documents this command as the method for capturing “the whole page including the content that isn’t currently visible in the viewport.” See the Chrome DevTools screenshot documentation for the current command names and related techniques.

The Command Menu includes several screenshot modes. They are not interchangeable:

  • Capture node screenshot captures a selected DOM element after you inspect it.
  • Capture area screenshot lets you draw a rectangle around a region.
  • Capture screenshot in device frame presents the capture inside a simulated device frame when that mode is available in your Chrome version.

For a webpage longer than the browser window, choose Capture full size screenshot; scrolling manually and taking several viewport screenshots produces separate images rather than one continuous page.

Before you capture: make the page stable

Full-page capture records the page as Chrome has rendered it. A few preparation steps prevent incomplete or misleading images:

  • Wait for fonts, images, charts and other visible content to finish loading.
  • Dismiss overlays that you do not want in the result, such as a newsletter dialog or an account prompt.
  • Scroll through the page once when it uses lazy loading. Some sites fetch images only when they approach the viewport; visiting lower sections can trigger those requests before capture.
  • Set the desired zoom level and window state before opening DevTools. Browser zoom changes the rendered dimensions and therefore the output size.
  • Close transient menus, tooltips and text selections that should not appear in the image.

Chrome captures the rendered document, not necessarily every item in a page’s data model. A virtualized feed may keep only nearby rows in the DOM, and a page with an internal scrolling panel may not expose that panel’s entire contents as document height.

What the full-page PNG contains

The result is one tall PNG representing the page’s scrollable document. It is useful for design reviews, bug reports, documentation, visual regression records and preserving a reference copy of a layout. It is an image, not an editable webpage: links, text selection and interactive controls do not remain functional.

Very long pages can create large files. If you need a PDF, annotations, redaction, OCR or a different image format, an extension or an automated capture service may be more suitable than the basic DevTools command.

When a Chrome extension is easier

An extension can replace the DevTools keyboard sequence with a toolbar button and may provide export or editing features.

GoFullPage

The GoFullPage Chrome Web Store listing describes full scrolling-page capture with PNG, JPEG and PDF export. Its listing includes a change-log entry dated 2026-09-24. A toolbar workflow can be more convenient if you capture pages frequently.

Full Page Screen Capture

The Full Page Screen Capture listing advertises an editor with annotation, redaction, OCR, cropping and PNG, JPG and PDF export. Those tools can help support, QA, design and documentation teams that must mark up or sanitize a capture.

Review permissions before installing

Extensions can request access to page content, browsing data or other browser capabilities. Read the Chrome Web Store permissions and the developer’s privacy terms before installing, particularly when capturing private dashboards, customer records or pages behind authentication. If a page contains sensitive information, prefer a workflow that keeps the capture local and verify where an extension stores or uploads images.

Limitations on complex webpages

The DevTools command is reliable for ordinary document pages, but no single method guarantees identical results on every site. Test the specific page type you care about.

Nested scrolling containers

A page may have a fixed-height panel with its own scrollbar. “Full size” generally refers to the document’s scrollable content; it may not automatically expand every nested panel. If the required content is inside a panel, inspect that element and use a node capture where practical, or temporarily adjust the panel’s CSS in DevTools for a local capture.

Lazy-loaded images

Images may be requested only as they approach the viewport. Scroll through the document first, wait for thumbnails or charts to appear, then run the full-size command. If the site still omits content, the page’s loading logic—not the screenshot shortcut—may be responsible.

Fixed headers and sticky elements

A sticky header can appear repeatedly or cover content as Chrome assembles a tall image. Hide it temporarily with an inspected element’s display:none style, or use an extension/service that offers a hide-selector option.

Virtualized feeds

Infinite feeds often render only the rows near the current scroll position. A screenshot may contain only the material that exists in the DOM at capture time. For these pages, export data directly when possible, or use a capture workflow that can scroll and wait while the site appends new items.

Bot checks and sign-in walls

If Chrome shows a CAPTCHA, bot-check page or login screen, the screenshot will reflect that state. You must complete the check or authenticate in the same browser profile before capturing, subject to the site’s terms and your organization’s policy.

Troubleshooting full-page captures

The screenshot command is missing

Confirm that DevTools has focus, then press the Command Menu shortcut again and type screenshot. If the labels differ, update Chrome and check the current DevTools documentation. On macOS, use Command+Shift+P, not the Windows/Linux shortcut.

Only the visible viewport was saved

You probably selected Capture screenshot. Reopen the Command Menu and choose Capture full size screenshot. Make sure the page itself—not a separate DevTools pane—has the focus.

Images or charts are blank

Wait for network activity and rendering to finish, then scroll through the page to trigger lazy loading. Some canvases, cross-origin resources or authenticated requests may not be available when Chrome captures the document.

The bottom of the page is missing

Check whether the page uses an internal scrolling element or a virtualized list. Expand the relevant container, capture the element, or use a tool that supports selector-based waits and full-page handling.

The file is too large to share

Open the PNG in an image editor and resize or convert it to JPEG/WebP. Keep the original if it may be needed for pixel-level review, because conversion can reduce quality.

Private information appears in the image

Cancel the capture, remove the data from the page or use a redaction editor before distribution. Do not upload confidential screenshots to an extension or service unless your organization has approved that data flow.

Or skip the browser setup

For automated or repeatable captures, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be switched off.

Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
