To let ChatGPT see a website, connect it to a persistent browser or desktop runtime, expose browser actions and screenshot capture through an MCP server, and return a fresh screenshot after each meaningful action. MCP carries the tool call and result; it does not render the page. The browser or desktop runtime does that. The useful pattern is action → screenshot → model decision → next action, with the same runtime kept alive between calls.
What “giving ChatGPT eyes” means
ChatGPT cannot inspect a live page merely because an MCP server is connected. A browser or desktop automation runtime must open and render the page, then capture its current visual state. The MCP server exposes focused operations—such as opening a page, clicking, typing, scrolling, and taking a screenshot—and returns the screenshot as an image content block or another image observation the model can inspect.
This is different from asking a model to infer a page from its URL, or from sending it a one-time image with no way to interact further. With a persistent session, the model can see the result of an action, decide what to do next, and continue from the updated page. OpenAI’s Computer Use documentation describes models using screenshots and other tool results to decide their next actions; its guidance treats Playwright and PyAutoGUI as possible runtime choices.
Choose a browser or desktop runtime
Pick the runtime based on what the task must see and control. Playwright is a browser-automation option; PyAutoGUI operates a desktop interface. Neither MCP nor the screenshot format determines which one is right.

- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
| Choice | Good fit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright | Tasks confined to a browser, where browser-specific automation and page structure are useful. | It does not provide general desktop coverage outside the browser window. |
| PyAutoGUI | Tasks that need to operate a desktop interface rather than only browser page elements. | Interaction is centered on the desktop UI; no comparative screenshot-fidelity or reliability result against Playwright is established in the available OpenAI guidance. |
Keep the browser or desktop session alive across tool calls. If each call starts a new runtime, the next action may not have the prior page, login state, or visible result. OpenAI’s guidance emphasizes a persistent environment; it does not provide a general success-rate or latency statistic for this screenshot workflow.
Build the action-and-screenshot loop
Keep the exposed tools narrow and explicit. A minimal browser-facing MCP server can offer open_page, click, type, scroll, and screenshot. Each operation should act on the persistent runtime, and screenshot should return an image the model can inspect—not merely a message that capture succeeded. Add only the operations the task needs.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
- Start an isolated runtime. Launch Playwright or PyAutoGUI in an environment that persists between tool calls. Keep browser state scoped to the task rather than exposing a user’s everyday browser session.
- Expose focused MCP tools. Have the server map tool requests to the runtime. For example,
open_pagenavigates to a permitted URL;clickandtypeperform a bounded interaction;screenshotcaptures the visible state and returns it as image content. - Take a screenshot after a meaningful change. After navigation, submission, scrolling, or another action that could change the page, capture a fresh image. Do not ask the model to make the next decision based on an old screenshot.
- Return the observation, then wait for the model. The model should inspect the screenshot and any relevant tool result before choosing another action. Use short action groups so a mistaken assumption does not compound over several unseen steps.
- Stop at consequential actions for confirmation. Require explicit approval before purchases, sending messages, account changes, deletion, or other actions with lasting effects.
This is an implementation pattern, not a universal ready-made server: the exact runtime setup and MCP SDK wiring depend on the host and language you choose. The MCP quickstart recommends focused tools and an exposed /mcp endpoint for the remote flow; use the SDK and host-specific setup documentation for your chosen environment rather than treating MCP as a browser driver.
Connect locally or remotely
For local development, a server using STDIO is the simpler connection shape: the host communicates with the local process. For remote ChatGPT access, OpenAI’s MCP quickstart describes a remote server exposed over Streamable HTTP at an HTTPS /mcp endpoint, with authentication added as needed. A remote server also needs to be reachable by the host; a local process by itself is not a public endpoint.

| Transport | Where it fits | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| STDIO | Local development and a host that can launch or communicate with the local server process. | It is local-process oriented; it does not by itself make a server remotely reachable. |
| Streamable HTTP | Remote deployment for a host connecting to an HTTPS MCP endpoint. | Deploy and secure the endpoint, add authentication as appropriate, and maintain the service. |
For ChatGPT, follow the plugin/developer-mode connection flow in OpenAI’s MCP quickstart and point it to the deployed HTTPS /mcp endpoint. The exact availability and setup controls depend on the ChatGPT host and its current configuration; do not assume that a local STDIO server is directly available to a remote ChatGPT session.
MCP and WebMCP are different connection models
An ordinary MCP server provides tools from a server, independently of whether a particular site is open. WebMCP, as described in OpenAI’s guidance, refers to site-provided tools discovered in ChatGPT’s built-in browser. Those tools are scoped to the open page: they are unavailable when the page is closed or when a site does not support them.

| Question | Ordinary MCP server | WebMCP site tools |
|---|---|---|
| Who provides the tools? | A local or remote MCP server. | The site through tools available in the built-in browser. |
| Does a specific page need to be open? | Not inherently; the server can work independently of an open page. | Yes. Discovery and availability are tied to the open, supporting page. |
| Who controls what is exposed? | The server operator defines tools and access controls. | The site supplies the tools, and the browser discovers them in page context. |
These models can complement one another, but they are not interchangeable: an MCP server gives you control over a separate browser runtime, while a page-scoped site tool is available only where the built-in browser discovers it. MCP Apps is a separate MCP extension; the MCP Core Maintainers announced it as the first official MCP extension on January 26, 2026. That announcement alone does not make MCP Apps synonymous with WebMCP.

A screenshot is not a trusted instruction source. Page text, images, and tool results can contain prompt injection or other content that attempts to steer the model. Treat the page as untrusted input, and restrict what the automation can reach and do.

- Isolate the runtime. Avoid giving the automation access to unrelated files, credentials, or an everyday logged-in browser profile.
- Use an allow list. Limit navigable sites and permitted actions to what the task requires.
- Keep permissions narrow. Separate read-only operations from actions that submit, purchase, delete, or modify account data. Use read-only or destructive annotations where supported.
- Require confirmation. Gate consequential actions, including messages, purchases, account changes, sensitive-data handling, and deletion.
- Make instructions explicit. Tell the model what the tools can and cannot do, and do not treat content returned by a page as an instruction to override those limits.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The model gets no visual result: Check that the screenshot tool returns image content the host can display to the model. A success string or file path alone is not the screenshot observation.
- The model acts on an outdated page: Capture a new screenshot after the action that changed the page, and return that result before asking the model to continue.
- Navigation works once, then state disappears: Keep the same browser or desktop runtime alive between tool calls instead of recreating it for every operation.
- ChatGPT cannot reach the server: A local STDIO process is not a remotely reachable endpoint. For remote ChatGPT access, use the documented Streamable HTTP setup with a reachable HTTPS
/mcpendpoint and configure authentication as needed. - A page’s built-in tools are missing: WebMCP-style site tools depend on the open page and site support. They are not a substitute for your own server’s browser tools on unsupported pages.
- An unexpected click or instruction appears: Treat the page and tool output as untrusted; stop, inspect the screenshot, and keep allow lists and confirmation gates in force.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a screenshot or PDF rather than an interactive browser session, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It does not replace a persistent browser runtime for multi-step navigation and interaction; it is a direct option for capturing a URL. One GET request returns an image or PDF. The example below saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; the other monthly tiers are Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan.
