Short answer: choose Playwright Test if you are willing to replace the Cypress runner and want built-in screenshot assertions. Stay with Cypress and add a local image-diff plugin if you need local control, or use a hosted service such as Applitools Eyes, Chromatic, or Percy when managed baselines, browser coverage, and review workflows matter. For clean, one-request page capture outside the test runner, ScreenshotNeo is the first API to try: it removes common consent banners and widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has a free 1,000-shot monthly plan.
This guide separates screenshot capture from visual-regression comparison, then maps each option to migration effort, rendering coverage, baseline ownership, review workflow, reliability, and cost checks.
First, distinguish a screenshot from a visual comparison
Cypress can capture an image with cy.screenshot(), including screenshots attached to failed tests. It can also store screenshots and videos according to its screenshot configuration. But Cypress’s own visual-testing documentation states: “Cypress does not perform image comparison itself.” A capture becomes a visual-regression test only when another tool saves a baseline, compares subsequent images, and gives someone a way to inspect or approve the change.
That distinction prevents a common implementation mistake: adding cy.screenshot() and assuming pixel regressions will fail the build. You still need a local plugin or a hosted comparison service, and you need a stable page state, browser, viewport, and data set.

Best options at a glance
| Option | Best fit | What is documented | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | API or MCP-based page capture; keep visual comparison elsewhere | One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; consent and widget cleanup can run before capture; failed or unusable pages are not billed. | It captures and evaluates page loads; it is not a baseline-diff approval system. |
| Playwright Test | Teams ready to move from Cypress to a code-first runner | expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() creates reference images and compares later runs. Pixel-difference controls and a stylesheet for volatile content are available. |
Reference files stay in your project, and rendering differs across operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, and headless mode. |
| Local Cypress image-diff plugins | Keep Cypress while owning files and CI artifacts | Cypress lists Cypress Image Diff, Cypress Image Snapshot, Cypress Visual Regression, and Visual Regression Diff; Pixeleye is listed as a self-hostable review platform with Cypress integration. | Your team maintains baselines, rendering consistency, diff artifacts, and approvals. |
| Applitools Eyes | AI-assisted comparison and cross-browser testing with Cypress | Cypress describes Visual AI, end-to-end and component tests, cross-browser rendering, and root-cause analysis. | Hosted commercial service; confirm current integration and pricing. |
| Chromatic | Cloud snapshots and pull-request review | Its Cypress integration archives the project, generates snapshots, performs pixel diffs, and supports review and approval. The Cypress setup requires Chrome for snapshotting. | Archived-project workflow and Chrome requirement may not fit every Cypress setup. |
| Percy (BrowserStack) | Cloud rendering at multiple browsers and responsive widths | Cypress supports DOM snapshots through cy.percySnapshot(), cloud rendering, and review/approval. |
Hosted workflow and vendor-specific limits require verification. |
| Argos, Happo, LambdaTest SmartUI, Sauce Labs Visual, SmartBear VisualTest, Wopee.io | A provider whose browser matrix or dashboard matches your process | Cypress documents integrations and differentiates component/full-page snapshots, browser/device rendering, and review dashboards. | Check current Cypress versions, browser support, workflow, pricing, and retention terms directly. |
1. Playwright Test: the clearest runner replacement
Playwright is the strongest framework-level alternative when screenshot assertions are the reason you are reconsidering Cypress. Its test runner owns the assertion and the snapshot files, rather than requiring a separate Cypress plugin.

Minimal visual-comparison test
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page remains visually stable', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
On the first run Playwright creates the reference image. Later runs compare the rendered result with that reference. Review and commit the baseline deliberately; a changed snapshot should represent an intentional UI change, not an automatic “accept” step.
Control noisy regions
Use a fixed viewport, deterministic test data, and a consistent browser/OS image in CI. Playwright documents maxDiffPixels for a bounded pixel tolerance and stylePath for hiding volatile elements. Keep these controls narrow: masking a clock, rotating ad, or live counter is preferable to loosening the threshold for the whole page.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('dashboard.png', {
maxDiffPixels: 100,
stylePath: './visual-test.css'
});
Playwright warns that screenshots vary with OS, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode. Build and compare snapshots in the same container or runner image. If you need Cypress’s existing commands, fixtures, and plugins, the migration cost may outweigh the built-in assertion.

A local plugin is the lowest-disruption route. Cypress’s official visual-testing guide lists Cypress Image Diff, Cypress Image Snapshot, Cypress Visual Regression, and Visual Regression Diff as maintained plugin choices. Pixeleye is listed as a self-hostable visual-review platform with a Cypress integration.

What the local model requires
- Install and configure one plugin that matches your Cypress version.
- Capture a named state after the page has finished loading and asynchronous data has settled.
- Store baseline images and update them through code review.
- Publish diff images as CI artifacts so a reviewer can see the changed region.
- Pin the browser, operating-system image, fonts, viewport, timezone, locale, and test data.
The exact command differs by plugin, so follow that package’s current README rather than copying an API name from an older example. The Cypress plugin directory is the right place to recheck package compatibility; its September 2026 entries list Cypress Image Snapshot and Chromatic’s plugin with a minimum Cypress version of 15.10.0, while Visual Regression Diff is listed as compatible with Cypress 13.0.0 and later. Directory entries can change.
3. Hosted visual services for managed review
Applitools Eyes
Choose this direction when AI-assisted comparison, cross-browser rendering, and root-cause analysis are more valuable than strict pixel equality. Cypress describes Eyes for both end-to-end and component testing. It remains a commercial hosted workflow, so validate the current Cypress adapter, browser matrix, retention, and price with Applitools.
Chromatic
Chromatic’s Cypress setup archives the Cypress project, uploads the page archive, generates snapshots, and provides pixel-diff review and approval. Its instructions require Chrome for snapshotting. Chromatic also documents a Playwright path that captures a page archive containing DOM, styles, and assets before cloud pixel comparison. This is useful if you migrate runners but still want hosted review.

4. ScreenshotNeo: a capture API and MCP option
ScreenshotNeo belongs at the top when your need is reliable page capture for test fixtures, reports, documentation, or an external visual pipeline—not when you expect the API itself to approve pixel diffs. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it can accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. The service also exposes an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
One-call capture
Get an API key, then see the parameter list in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const body = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', body));
For a Cypress visual test, save the returned image as an artifact or feed it into your chosen diff tool. ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for selectors/delay/network idle, request and resource blocking, custom headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTL, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, OpenAPI, and familiar parameter names for easier migration.

How to choose
- Decide whether Cypress stays. Migrating to Playwright gives a first-party screenshot assertion; plugins and services preserve existing Cypress tests.
- Choose baseline ownership. Local files maximize control but make your team responsible for updates and review. Hosted tools centralize those workflows.
- Specify rendering coverage. One pinned CI browser may be enough. Cross-browser, responsive, and device matrices favor a service designed to render them.
- Pick comparison behavior. Pixel diffs expose exact changes; AI-assisted comparison can help distinguish meaningful layout changes from rendering noise.
- Define approval. Decide whether pull-request artifacts are sufficient or whether reviewers need a dashboard with accept/reject history.
- Validate compatibility and terms. Check your Cypress release, browser constraints, CI network policy, snapshot retention, plan limits, and current price before adoption.
Reliability checklist
- Wait for the intended state, not merely the first DOM paint.
- Freeze clocks, API responses, random data, animations, ads, and rotating content.
- Use fixed viewport, browser, OS image, fonts, locale, timezone, and device scale.
- Snapshot a meaningful page or component; smaller element-level diffs are easier to review.
- Hide or mask only uncontrollable regions.
- Review intentional changes and update baselines in the same pull request.
- Treat a diff threshold as a safety valve, not as a replacement for deterministic data.
Troubleshooting common failures
“The test passes but no regression is detected”
cy.screenshot() only captured an image. Add a comparison plugin or service and verify that its assertion is awaited or returned so Cypress waits for it.
Every run produces large diffs
Pin the CI image and browser, disable animations, freeze network data, and set a fixed viewport. Hide timestamps or rotating widgets with a narrowly scoped mask or stylesheet.
Baselines differ between laptop and CI
Generate and compare in the same container, browser version, fonts, headless mode, and device scale. Do not approve a laptop baseline for a different CI renderer without checking the diff.
Chromatic snapshotting fails
Confirm Chrome is installed and that the archived-project workflow matches your Cypress configuration. Recheck Chromatic’s current Cypress instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Playwright a drop-in replacement for Cypress screenshot commands?
No. Playwright uses a different test runner, fixtures, selectors, and configuration. Plan a migration rather than swapping one command.
Can I use ScreenshotNeo as my visual-regression baseline store?
ScreenshotNeo provides capture, verdict, and delivery features. You still need a diff and approval layer such as Playwright assertions, a Cypress plugin, or a hosted visual-testing service.
Should visual tests compare full pages or elements?
Use the smallest meaningful target. Element-level snapshots reduce unrelated noise; full-page captures are useful for page-level layout and responsive checks.
