Choose the kind of copy you actually need
“Save a website as HTML” can mean three different jobs. Decide the scope and packaging before saving, because each method preserves different things.

A saved copy is a snapshot of fetched files, not a backup of the site’s database, server code, accounts, forms, search, payments or other live services.
Save one page in Firefox
Mozilla’s “How to save a web page” guidance (updated August 11, 2023) describes three useful file types. Labels can move in later Firefox versions, but the workflow remains the same.

- Open the exact page you want to keep.
- Open the browser menu and choose Save Page As (you can also use the keyboard shortcut shown by your operating system).
- Choose a filename and destination.
- Select the appropriate file type, then select Save.
Web page, HTML only
This writes the original document as one HTML file. It keeps the page’s original HTML link structure, but does not include pictures or other subresources. Use it when you need source markup, want to inspect or edit the document, or deliberately want external resources to remain referenced.
Web page, complete
This saves the HTML and creates a new companion directory containing pictures and other files needed by the page. Opening the HTML locally can reproduce the visible layout more closely than HTML-only output. Mozilla cautions that the original HTML link structure may not be preserved, so links can behave differently from the online page.
Text files
Text files save readable text rather than HTML. They are useful for notes or archival reading, not for preserving a page’s markup or design.
Use a single-file archive when a folder is inconvenient
Microsoft’s WebView2 API documents three save kinds: HtmlOnly, SingleFile, and Complete. These are API values, not a promise that every browser exposes identical menu labels.

- HtmlOnly: saves the top-level document and excludes subresources.
- SingleFile: saves an MHTML archive, embedding page resources where supported.
- Complete: saves HTML and related CSS, JavaScript and image files in a directory that shares the filename prefix.
Choose a single-file archive for an attachment, ticket or hand-off where keeping an HTML file and its resource folder together is impractical. Test the resulting file in the browser your recipient will use; MHTML support and treatment of scripts, fonts and cross-origin resources differ.
Save a whole site with HTTrack
A browser Save command operates on the current page. HTTrack is designed to mirror a starting site, follow links within configured scope, and rewrite saved links so the local pages can be browsed together.
Control the crawl before it starts
- Set the starting URL and decide whether the crawl may remain on that host, expand to a domain, or include additional hosts.
- Set a link depth and use include/exclude filters to avoid downloading irrelevant paths.
- Review the default robots.txt behavior and respect the site owner’s access rules.
- Keep the output in a dedicated directory so the generated tree and logs are easy to identify.
HTTrack writes logs that identify refused, redirected or filtered URLs. When pages are missing, inspect those logs before changing the crawl scope.
Understand what HTTrack can discover
HTTrack parses HTML and CSS but does not execute JavaScript while discovering links. A URL assembled only at runtime—such as a lazy-loaded image, an API response or a client-side route—can therefore be invisible to the crawler. A page that looks complete in a browser may be incomplete in the mirror.

Convert mirrored pages to individual single files
HTTrack also provides a single-file conversion after crawling. It can embed stylesheets, scripts, images and fonts as data URIs in saved HTML pages. Its guide documents a default 10 MB per-asset limit: larger assets are left linked. Audio and video remain linked, as do links between pages. The result is still a mirrored site tree; the conversion only makes an individual HTML page easier to share.
What survives—and what does not
Images, CSS and fonts
HTML-only output omits subresources. Use Complete or a single-file archive when offline appearance matters. Even then, check that fonts and cross-origin assets were actually fetched; a blocked request can leave a page looking different.
JavaScript-generated content
Saving the DOM after a browser has rendered it is different from downloading the original response. A crawler that does not run JavaScript will not discover content or URLs created at runtime. Client-rendered menus, lazy images, infinite scroll and API-fed text may be absent from a static mirror.
Audio and video
HTTrack’s single-file conversion does not embed audio or video; those resources remain linked. A local HTML file therefore may still need an internet connection to play media.

Login, cookies and forms
HTTrack documents cookie support and login-related mechanisms, but a public crawl should not be assumed to reproduce an authenticated state. A saved login page can expire, expose only the currently authorized view, or fail when its server-side form endpoint is unavailable. Never place session cookies or authorization headers in a shared archive.
Live services and server behavior
Search, comments, shopping carts, analytics, personalization and other server-side features do not become local merely because their surrounding HTML was saved. Treat the result as a read-only snapshot unless you have separately recreated every required service.
A reliable workflow for offline copies
- Define scope: one URL, a bounded section, or an entire allowed host.
- Pick packaging: HTML-only for markup, Complete for a page plus resources, or single-file/MHTML for one portable archive.
- Load the page normally first: confirm that the content you need is visible and that you are allowed to copy it.
- Save and label the result: include the URL and capture date in your notes; do not overwrite the source page accidentally.
- Test offline: disconnect or use an offline browser profile, open the saved file, click important links and check images, styles, fonts and media.
- For a mirror, inspect logs: identify refused, redirected, filtered and missing URLs, then adjust scope or filters deliberately.
- Keep credentials out: remove cookies, authorization data and private exports before sharing the archive.

Performance, reliability and storage considerations
- One-page saves are simplest: they make one request context into a local file or resource set, but they cannot capture an entire site.
- Complete saves use more files: preserve the folder next to the HTML file when moving or backing it up.
- Mirrors grow with scope: host rules, depth, filters and asset size determine how much is downloaded. Start narrow and expand after verifying the result.
- Retries can change content: pages, redirects and APIs may change between requests. Record the capture date and source URL for reproducibility.
- Offline testing is essential: a page that looks correct while your connection is active may still be loading remote CSS, fonts, scripts or media.

The safest practice is to save the smallest scope that answers your purpose, test it without a network connection, and retain the source URL and capture date alongside the files.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does my browser put a saved HTML page?
It uses the filename and destination you select in the Save Page As dialog. If you cannot find it later, search that destination for the chosen .html filename and, for a Complete save, its companion folder.
Can I edit a saved HTML file?
Yes. HTML-only output is a text document you can open in an editor, but changing it does not update the original site or recreate its server-side behavior.
Is saving a page the same as downloading the source with View Source?
No. View Source shows the server response, while a browser save can also write fetched resources or an archive of the rendered document. Dynamic content may therefore differ.
How should I preserve a copy for evidence or records?
Keep the saved files unchanged, record the URL and capture date, and store a screenshot or PDF alongside the HTML when visual appearance matters.
