To prove that a marketplace listing complied with policy, capture the complete policy and enforcement context—not just the listing image. Preserve an untouched original that shows the marketplace, page title, full URL, listing or app identifier, relevant policy text, and the UTC capture time. Keep a contemporaneous log linking each image to the listing edit, invoice, creation record, or support ticket it supports. Submit screenshots with the other evidence the platform requests; a screenshot alone does not guarantee reinstatement.
What a credible compliance screenshot contains
A reviewer must be able to tell what was shown, where it appeared, and when it was true. For every capture, aim to include:
- Marketplace identity: the Etsy, eBay, Google Play, Amazon, or other platform page and its visible branding.
- Page title and full URL: include the address bar when possible. Save the URL separately as text as well.
- Account, listing, product, or app identifier: show the listing ID, SKU, app package, or account reference that connects the image to your case.
- Relevant policy language or status: capture the exact rule, warning, rejection, removal notice, or policy-console status—not a cropped sentence without context.
- UTC timestamp: record the capture time in UTC in your evidence log. If the interface displays a date or status time, capture that too.
- Enough surrounding context: include navigation, headings, and nearby fields so a reviewer can distinguish a live page from an edited image.
Keep the first file untouched. Make a separate annotated copy with arrows, boxes, or highlights for an appeal statement. Never overwrite the original with annotations.
A repeatable capture and preservation workflow
1. Define the policy question
Write one sentence such as “The removed handmade listing used my own photographs and was created in my workspace” or “The app screenshots accurately represented the released feature.” This determines which pages and records you need. List the policy version or URL, the listing or app ID, the date of the relevant edit, and the enforcement event.

2. Capture the policy and enforcement state
- Open the live policy page and confirm the domain and page title.
- Capture the complete relevant section, including headings and any revision or effective date shown.
- Open the seller or developer console and capture the warning, rejection, removal, suspension, or “no issues” status with the affected identifier.
- Capture the full URL and note the UTC time immediately after each image.
Policies and console labels change. Save a PDF or page export when the platform permits it, but retain the original image too. Re-check the live policy immediately before filing an appeal.
3. Capture the listing or product as it existed
Capture the public listing and, if available, the edit or preview screen showing title, description, category, tags, price, images, and digital files. For an app, capture the store listing and the in-product screen that demonstrates the claimed function. Do not rely on a single hero image when the dispute concerns how an item was made or how a feature works.
4. Add process evidence where the rule calls for it
Finished-item screenshots can show the result but not necessarily authorship or sourcing. Add dated images or records of your workspace, tools, raw materials, production steps, packaging, inventory, supplier invoices, partner communications, creation videos, or source-control and release records when they address the allegation. Link each file to the specific policy sentence it supports.
5. Create an evidence log
Use a spreadsheet or case document with one row per file:

6. Preserve originals and make safe derivatives
Store originals in write-protected or versioned storage and retain export metadata. If buyer or customer information appears, redact it only in a derivative copy. Keep an access-controlled original where lawful and disclose the redaction in your log. A cryptographic hash can demonstrate that an exported file has not changed after capture, but it does not prove that the page itself was truthful.

7. Check the filing rules before uploading
Record the platform’s evidence types, file-count and size limits, deadline, and whether the action is at listing, product, app, or account level. Name files consistently and test that each opens before submitting. Keep a copy of the submitted package and confirmation number.
Platform-specific evidence and appeal rules
The same screenshot can be useful on one service and insufficient on another. These are the published rules to check for the major marketplaces covered here; interfaces and deadlines can change.

How to take defensible browser screenshots yourself
- Prepare a clean session. Sign in only to the account needed for the evidence, close unrelated tabs, and disable extensions that alter page content. Do not remove a consent notice if the fact that it appeared is relevant; capture it first, then capture the page after accepting it if that is the state you need to document.
- Set a known viewport. Use a consistent desktop or mobile viewport and record its dimensions. For responsive claims, capture each relevant viewport and label the files.
- Load the complete page. Scroll through long listings so lazy-loaded images and policy sections appear. Wait for status badges, images, or tables to finish loading before capture.
- Show identity and context. Include the page heading and identifier; include the address bar when possible. Take a full-page image for the record and a focused crop only as an annotated derivative.
- Capture dynamic evidence separately. If a menu, modal, or hover state contains the policy text, capture the closed page and the open state as two files. Record the action that produced the state.
- Export without editing. Save the browser’s original PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF export. Do not resize or recompress the original. Generate smaller copies only for an upload limit.
- Log and hash. Immediately enter the UTC time, URL, identifier, viewport, and file hash (if available) in the evidence log.

Make captures reproducible
Use the same URL, viewport, timezone, wait condition, and authentication method when recapturing a page. Record whether cookies or a custom user agent were required. For a page that changes frequently, save a PDF and the raw image together and note the policy’s displayed revision date.

Handle private or personalized pages carefully
Do not place passwords or long-lived session cookies in scripts or evidence logs. Use a restricted service account where the platform permits it, remove secrets from filenames, and limit access to originals. Redact buyer data in the derivative submitted to a reviewer, while retaining the lawful original under access control.
Control file size without losing proof
Prefer PNG for text-heavy pages and a lossless or high-quality export for images. If a platform imposes a size limit, make a compressed derivative and keep the original plus its hash. Never shrink text until policy wording becomes unreadable.

The capture shows a blank page or spinner

The page has changed since the incident
Submit the archived original, URL, UTC time, displayed policy date or version, and a short explanation of the change. Pair it with listing revisions, invoices, or support tickets that establish what was true at the relevant time. Do not present a current page as if it were historical.
The reviewer says a screenshot is insufficient
Answer the exact allegation with process records, source files, invoices, creation videos, app builds, or supplier documentation. Explain what each attachment proves and how it relates to the policy clause. Screenshots establish visible state; they do not independently establish authorship, ownership, or compliance.
Writing the appeal package
- Open with the action, identifier, and date.
- Quote or paraphrase the specific policy clause without changing its meaning.
- For each evidence ID, state the fact it proves and the capture time.
- Address weaknesses directly, such as a changed URL, a redaction, or a missing original.
- Ask for the precise remedy—listing review, document re-review, or account appeal—and retain the submission receipt.
Etsy explicitly says, “It is your responsibility to make sure your shop and its items are in compliance with Etsy’s policies.” Treat that responsibility as an ongoing recordkeeping task: capture policy changes and important listing edits before an enforcement event, not only afterward.

Should I submit the annotated image or the untouched original?
Submit an annotated derivative only when it helps the reviewer find a fact, and identify it as a derivative. Keep the untouched original available and provide it if requested.
Can a screenshot prove that I created an item or own an image?
No. It can show what the marketplace displayed at a particular time. Use creation records, source files, licenses, invoices, or production evidence to establish authorship or rights.
How should I document a policy page that has no revision date?
Record the full URL, page title, UTC capture time, visible text, and any archive or export metadata. State that the page did not display a revision date rather than assigning one.
Is a PDF better than an image for an appeal?
Neither is universally better. Use the format the platform accepts, keep text readable, and preserve both a full-page original and a focused derivative when file limits allow.
