On a Windows laptop, press Windows+Shift+S to choose a screen area, window, or full-screen capture. On a Mac, use Shift-Command-3 for the screen or Shift-Command-4 for an area. On a Chromebook, press the Screenshot key or Shift+Ctrl+Show windows. The right shortcut depends on your operating system; use the matching instructions below to find the capture tool and locate the image.
Choose your laptop’s operating system
If you are unsure which instructions to follow, check the system you use to sign in and open apps: Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, or Linux. Keyboard layouts also differ, so a Chromebook or external keyboard may not have a key with the same name as your laptop’s built-in keyboard.

These are built-in options. The Linux shortcuts and save location below are for GNOME specifically; other Linux distributions or desktop environments may use different tools and key combinations.
Take a screenshot on a Windows laptop
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include Snipping Tool. For most captures, the easiest starting point is Windows+Shift+S. Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to copy words or images from all or part of a PC screen. Microsoft’s Windows instructions cover both supported versions.

- Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and the snipping overlay appears.
- Choose the capture shape: rectangular, freeform, window, or full screen.
- For a region, drag over the part you want. For a window, select the window. For a full-screen snip, choose the full-screen option.
- Open the notification or Snipping Tool to review the capture. Use the tool to make changes, save it, or share it.
Copy the entire screen quickly
Press Print Screen for a static snapshot of the entire screen copied to the clipboard. To use it, open the app or document where you want the image and paste it. Unlike saving a file through Snipping Tool, a clipboard capture needs to be pasted into an app or document if you want to keep it there.
When the shortcut does not match your keyboard
Look for a key labelled PrtSc, PrtScn, or similar; the label varies. If the key is absent or the shortcut is unfamiliar, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and use its on-screen capture controls. Windows laptops and keyboards do not all label keys identically.
Take a screenshot on a Mac laptop
macOS provides separate shortcuts for a full-screen capture, a selected area, and the Screenshot app. Apple’s instructions apply to the Screenshot app available in macOS Mojave 10.14 or later. See Apple’s Mac screenshot guide for the controls and options.
- Shift-Command-3: capture the screen.
- Shift-Command-4: select an area to capture.
- Shift-Command-5: open the Screenshot app and its controls.
Screenshots are saved to the desktop by default. In the Screenshot app, you can change the destination. If you need the image on the clipboard instead of as a file, Control-click the screenshot thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard.

Some apps can prevent screenshots of their windows. Apple specifically notes that this can happen with apps including Apple TV; a blocked app window does not necessarily mean the keyboard shortcut is broken.
Take a screenshot on a Chromebook
Use the Screenshot key if your Chromebook keyboard has one. Otherwise, open Settings > Screen Capture, or press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows to open the capture toolbar. Google’s Chromebook instructions describe the available capture modes.
- Open Screen Capture with the keyboard shortcut or from Settings.
- In the bottom toolbar, choose full screen, partial screen, or window capture.
- Follow the on-screen prompt for the selected mode: select the window or area, or capture the full screen.
- Find the screenshot in Downloads, the default save location.
You can change the save folder in Screen Capture settings. If you are using an external keyboard without a Show windows key, Google’s instructions specify Ctrl+Shift+F5 instead.
Take a screenshot on Linux with GNOME
Linux does not have one universal screenshot interface: shortcuts depend on the distribution and desktop environment. On GNOME, press Print to open the screenshot interface, then choose a screen, window, or selection. The GNOME-specific shortcut reference also lists Alt+Print for the focused window and Shift+Print for the whole screen.

GNOME saves screenshots under Pictures/Screenshots and copies them to the clipboard. These instructions come from GNOME’s screenshot help and its keyboard shortcut reference; check your desktop environment’s own help if those controls do not apply.
Choose a full screen, window, or region
Use the capture scope that fits what you need to share or save:
- Full screen: captures everything visible on the display. Use it when the overall desktop or complete screen context matters.
- Window: captures one app window instead of the whole desktop. Select the window in the platform’s capture tool, or use the documented window shortcut where available.
- Region: captures only the portion you select. This is useful when surrounding content is irrelevant; on Windows or Mac, use the area-selection option or shortcut.
Before sharing, check what the capture includes. A full-screen image may show other open windows or desktop content; a selected area can keep the image focused on the item you intend to show.
Find, save, or paste the screenshot
A screenshot can be saved as a file, copied to the clipboard, or handled by a capture app. Those are different outcomes: a clipboard image is ready to paste, but it is not necessarily a file in a folder yet.

- Windows: Print Screen copies the entire screen to the clipboard. For a Windows+Shift+S snip, open it in Snipping Tool to make changes, save, or share.
- Mac: the default save location is the desktop. Use the Screenshot app to change the destination, or Control-click the thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard.
- Chromebook: the default location is Downloads. Screen Capture settings let you change the save folder.
- GNOME: the save location is Pictures/Screenshots, and GNOME copies the image to the clipboard as well.
If you cannot find a capture, check the platform’s default location and any on-screen notification or capture app before taking it again.

The shortcut does nothing
Confirm that you are using the shortcut for your operating system, not another laptop’s. Check for a differently labelled or missing key, and use the on-screen tool instead: Snipping Tool on Windows, Screenshot on Mac, or Screen Capture on Chromebook. On Linux, verify that the desktop environment is GNOME before relying on the GNOME combinations.
The image is not in the folder you expected
Check the documented default: Mac desktop, Chromebook Downloads, or GNOME Pictures/Screenshots. Windows Snipping Tool lets you save a snip, so open the tool or its notification and save the image where you want it. Mac and Chromebook capture settings can change their destinations.
You want to paste the screenshot, but cannot find a file
Some actions copy an image to the clipboard rather than saving a file. On Windows, Print Screen copies the full screen; paste it into the destination app. On Mac, use the screenshot thumbnail’s Control-click menu and choose Save to Clipboard. GNOME’s documented screenshot flow copies captures as well as saving them.

An app window appears blank or cannot be captured
Some apps restrict screenshots of their windows. Apple identifies Apple TV as one example. If a particular app blocks capture, use its available sharing or export options instead of assuming a different keyboard shortcut will remove the restriction.

Do I need to install a screenshot app?
No. The built-in capture tools described here are sufficient for screenshots on the listed systems.
Can I take a screenshot if my keyboard has no Print Screen key?
Yes. Use your operating system’s on-screen capture tool or its other documented shortcut; Print Screen is not required for the Windows Snipping Tool, Mac Screenshot app, or Chromebook Screen Capture.
