Browser themes may change browser chrome without changing a site’s content, so use the website’s own theme control when available. If the page has no control, a theme-changing extension or an automated screenshot service can help, but neither guarantees perfect results on every site.
First decide what “dark mode” means
There are two separate layers:
- Browser interface: menus, toolbar, settings, and the browser homepage.
- Webpage content: the text, cards, images, navigation, and backgrounds delivered by the site.
Chrome’s official documentation says, “When you browse in Dark mode or Dark theme in Chrome, your homepage, toolbar, settings, and some other pages will be dark.” That description does not promise that arbitrary websites will switch their content. Open the site’s own appearance menu first; common labels include Theme, Appearance, a sun/moon icon, or Light/Dark/System.
When the site has no theme control
A webpage-altering extension can apply dark or light styling, but compatibility, permissions, privacy practices, and cross-browser support vary. Check the current store listing and permissions before installing. Do not assume an extension will preserve every image, chart, code block, or interactive component.
Choose the capture area

Full-page stitching can expose repeated headers, missing lazy-loaded images, fixed-position elements, or animation artifacts. Review the output before sharing it.

Firefox: full page, visible area, or region
Firefox documents all three capture scopes and lets you download an image or copy it to the clipboard.
- Set the website’s theme, or apply your chosen page-style extension.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot (the command can move as Firefox changes).
- Choose Save full page, Save visible, or drag to select a region.
- Use the download control to save the image, or the copy control to place it on the clipboard.
If a long page contains lazy images, scroll through it once before capturing so the browser has an opportunity to load them. Authenticated pages, animations, unusual canvases, and embedded documents may still render differently from what you see.
Microsoft Edge: full-page or selected-area capture
Edge’s official feature supports full-page and selected-area captures, markup, copying, and saving. It documents three access routes:
- Right-click the page and select the screenshot/web capture command.
- Open Settings and more and choose the capture option.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows when the shortcut is available.
Select Capture full page for a top-to-bottom image or draw a selected area. Add markup if needed, then copy or save. Edge notes that availability and functionality can vary by device, market, and browser version, so use the current command shown in your installation if a label differs.

Chrome: set the theme, then capture
Set Chrome’s browser appearance
- Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and choose Settings.
- Open Appearance.
- Choose Light, Dark, or Device where those choices are offered.
This changes Chrome’s interface and the pages covered by Chrome’s dark-theme implementation. It is not a universal webpage switch. For site content, use the site’s theme button or a compatible extension.
Capture a visible or full page
Chrome’s built-in capture labels and availability can differ by version. Open the browser menu or use DevTools’ command menu and search for screenshot. Choose a visible-viewport or full-page option when offered, then save the PNG. If your build lacks a full-page command, use Edge or Firefox, or a reviewed extension.
Extensions: useful when the browser is not enough
The Chrome Web Store listing for Full Page Screen Capture describes an editor with markup, redaction, image adjustments, OCR, and PNG, JPG, or PDF export. Those are listing claims, not independent performance tests. Review current permissions and details before installation.
GoFullPage’s store change log records a compatibility fix dated 2026-09-24 for a Chromium URL requirement. This illustrates why extension instructions can change: install from the current official listing, keep it updated, and remove access you no longer need.

A reliable workflow for dark- or light-mode captures
- Open the exact URL. Confirm you are on the intended locale, account, and page state.
- Apply the appearance. Prefer the site’s own Light/Dark control. Otherwise use the browser or an extension at the page-content level.
- Wait for the layout to settle. Dismiss consent dialogs, newsletter popups, and chat panels if they obscure the page.
- Load deferred content. Scroll through long pages if images or sections appear only on demand.
- Choose scope. Visible, full page, or selected region should match the purpose of the image.
- Inspect the result. Check the top, bottom, sticky elements, fonts, contrast, images, and any repeated or missing content.
- Save with useful metadata. Use a filename such as
example-dark-full-2026-09-29.pngand record the URL if the image is evidence or documentation.
Common problems and fixes
The page stays light after I enable dark mode
You changed browser chrome rather than webpage content. Use the site’s appearance control or a page-style extension. Some sites ignore preference signals or render colors inside a canvas, image, or embedded frame.
The full-page image is blank or clipped
Try a visible-area capture first, reload, close overlays, disable a conflicting extension, and capture again. For very long pages, capture sections or use an automated tool that waits for a selector or network idle.
Images are missing
Scroll to trigger lazy loading, wait for network activity to finish, and ensure the image host is not blocked. An authenticated or geo-restricted asset may require the same session, cookies, and location as the browser.
A fixed header appears repeatedly
That is a stitching artifact from a position-fixed element. Hide the header temporarily if the tool supports element hiding, or capture the page in sections.

Animations or carousels differ between captures
Pause the animation where possible, wait for a deterministic state, or use a delay and a script that sets the desired state. A screenshot is a single moment, not a guarantee of every animation frame.
The shortcut or menu item is missing
Browser versions, operating systems, managed policies, and markets can change availability. Use the current menu, update the browser, or switch to another documented browser workflow.
