In Chrome, open DevTools with F12 (or Inspect), enable Device Mode, enter the width and height in Responsive mode, then choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture a full size screenshot for the entire page. If the saved file must have contractual pixel dimensions, check its dimensions afterward: zoom, device-pixel ratio, operating-system scaling and export behavior can change the bitmap even when the CSS viewport is correct.
Choose the kind of screenshot you actually need
“Specific size” can mean several different outputs. Decide this first, because each DevTools command captures a different thing.

A full-size image can be much taller than your configured height. Therefore, a 1440×900 viewport setting does not promise a 1440×900 full-page file.
Capture an exact viewport in Chrome DevTools

Open Device Mode
Open the target page in Chrome, right-click and choose Inspect, or press F12. Click the Toggle device toolbar button (the phone-and-tablet icon), or use the DevTools shortcut shown for your operating system.

Enter the dimensions
In the device toolbar, choose Responsive. Type the required width and height into the dimension fields. Chrome’s documented presets include 320px, 375px, 425px, 768px, 1024px, 1440px and 2560px, but you can enter other values directly.
For a 1920×1080 capture, enter 1920 for width and 1080 for height. Keep the lock/aspect-ratio control unlocked if width and height must be independent.

Stabilize the page
Wait for fonts, images and late-loading components to finish. Scroll to the intended starting position if the screenshot should represent a particular section. Close browser UI that is not part of the page; DevTools captures the emulated page viewport, not the surrounding desktop.

Capture the viewport
Open the Device Mode More options menu (three dots) and choose Capture screenshot. The downloaded image represents the visible viewport at the configured dimensions.

Capture the complete page instead
From the same menu, choose Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome describes this as capturing “the whole page including the content that isn’t currently visible in the viewport.” The output height follows the page’s scrollable content, not the viewport-height field.

Capture only a rectangle or one element
Area capture
Use DevTools’ area screenshot workflow when you need a rectangle that is not naturally represented by one DOM element. Select the area on the rendered page, then save the result. This is useful for a banner, chart, or visual slice whose exact boundaries are easier to draw than to inspect.
Node capture
In the Elements panel, inspect the element you want. Chrome provides a node screenshot command from the element’s context menu or the Command Menu. This isolates the element rather than the complete viewport. Padding, borders, pseudo-elements and overflow still follow the element’s rendered layout, so inspect the result if a design specification requires a precise outer box.
Make the bitmap dimensions reliable
DevTools dimensions are CSS viewport dimensions. The downloaded bitmap can also depend on browser zoom, device pixel ratio (DPR), operating-system display scaling and the browser’s export path. There is no single conversion that applies to every combination.
- Set Chrome zoom to 100% for a repeatable baseline.
- Use the same DPR/device scale setting on every capture machine.
- Keep operating-system display scaling consistent in a team or CI environment.
- Do not assume a full-page capture will retain the viewport height.
- Open the saved PNG, JPEG or WebP and verify its actual pixel width and height before publishing or comparing it.
If a specification says “exactly 1200×630 pixels,” treat the saved-file check as a required validation step, not an optional visual check.
Automate fixed-size captures with WebDriver BiDi
For repeatable QA, documentation or CI, browser automation avoids manual resizing. The WebDriver BiDi browsingContext.captureScreenshot command returns an encoded image and supports either a rectangular region or a specific element. Your automation must still create a consistent browsing context: set the viewport/window size, standardize zoom and device scale, wait for the page state you need, then decode and write the returned image.
- Start a browser session through a WebDriver BiDi client.
- Navigate to the URL and set the browsing context’s viewport/window dimensions to the target CSS width and height.
- Wait for the required selector, fonts, images or application state.
- Call
browsingContext.captureScreenshotwith a region for a rectangle, or an element reference for an element capture. - Decode the returned image data, save it, and assert the file’s pixel dimensions.
A region capture is appropriate when coordinates are part of the test contract; an element capture is safer when responsive layout can move the component. Keep browser version, operating-system scaling and device scale pinned in CI so that visual diffs measure page changes rather than environment changes.

Firefox and Edge alternatives
Firefox
Firefox DevTools’ Measuring Tool lets you drag a rectangle and displays its x, y and diagonal dimensions. Arrow keys move the rectangle; Ctrl/Cmd plus arrow keys resize it. The documented tool is useful for planning a precise crop, but its cited documentation does not describe a complete fixed-size export workflow. Use it to measure, then capture with a workflow that can verify the resulting file.

Edge’s Screenshot tool lets you select exactly what to capture. Microsoft notes that feature availability can vary by device, market and browser version, so confirm that the command exists in your installed edition before documenting a team procedure.
Troubleshooting exact-size captures
The file is not the width and height I entered
Check whether you captured the full page rather than the viewport, then inspect Chrome zoom, DPR and operating-system scaling. Verify the saved file’s metadata and repeat with a fixed 100% zoom and standardized device scale.
The bottom of the page is missing
You used Capture screenshot, which captures only the visible viewport. Use Capture a full size screenshot when content below the fold is required. Expect the resulting height to exceed the configured viewport height.
Images or fonts are missing
Wait for network requests and lazy-loaded content to finish before capturing. Scroll through a long page if its application loads images only near the viewport, then capture again. For automated runs, wait for a meaningful selector or application-ready state rather than using an arbitrary short delay.

An element capture includes unexpected space
Inspect the node’s computed box, margins, borders, pseudo-elements and overflow. If you need only the painted pixels inside a visual rectangle, use area capture; if you need the component’s layout box, keep the node capture and document the CSS box model.
Two machines produce different screenshots
Align Chrome/browser versions, viewport CSS dimensions, zoom, DPR, operating-system scale, fonts and page state. A screenshot comparison is only meaningful when those inputs are controlled.
Automation is flaky
Use deterministic waits, stable test data and a pinned browser environment. Capture after the target selector exists and required assets have loaded. Save the command response and failure logs so a timeout, navigation error or rendering difference can be distinguished from a genuine visual regression.
