The two practical choices are Spatie Browsershot (a PHP wrapper around Puppeteer) and the Playwright PHP library. Navigate to the URL, wait for a condition that proves the visual content you need is ready, then save either a viewport or full-page image.
A browser’s load event is only one milestone. Single-page apps can render components and fetch data afterward, so “loaded” must be defined for the particular page—usually by a selector or application state.
What you need before writing PHP
- PHP with Composer and a writable output directory.
- A Chromium-compatible browser runtime. Browsershot uses Puppeteer and its installed browser; Playwright PHP installs and controls supported browser binaries.
- A readiness condition for the target site, such as
.report-tableappearing or a JavaScript expression becoming true. - A defined viewport, URL, and screenshot type (PNG, JPEG, viewport, or full page).
Browsershot’s older v2 Chrome CLI route is no longer maintained; new implementations should use its current Puppeteer-based route. Playwright PHP’s README currently lists PHP 8.2+ and Node.js 20+ and provides a browser-install command. Verify those requirements in the repository before deployment because they can change.
Choose Browsershot or Playwright PHP
| Consideration | Browsershot | Playwright PHP |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime model | Fluent PHP API over Puppeteer. | PHP wrapper around Playwright’s browser automation API; its documented setup includes a Node.js runtime and browser installation. |

Route 1: capture with Spatie Browsershot
Install and configure the browser layer
Install Browsershot through Composer according to its current documentation, then make sure Puppeteer and a compatible browser are available to the PHP process. In containers, install the required system libraries and browser in the image rather than relying on a developer workstation.
Minimal loaded-page screenshot
<?php
require __DIR__ . '/vendor/autoload.php';
use SpatieBrowsershotBrowsershot;
Browsershot::url('https://example.com')
->waitForSelector('.page-content')
->save(__DIR__ . '/page.png');
waitForSelector() is preferable to an arbitrary sleep when the selector appears only after the page has rendered the content you intend to capture. Replace .page-content with a selector that is stable and meaningful for your site.
Full-page output and network-idle waiting
<?php
use SpatieBrowsershotBrowsershot;
Browsershot::url('https://example.com/catalog')
->waitUntilNetworkIdle()
->fullPage()
->save(__DIR__ . '/catalog-full.png');
Browsershot documents a 500 ms network-idle period and a less strict form that permits two ongoing connections. Network idle can be useful for lazy-loaded resources or web fonts, but analytics, polling, advertisements, and streaming can keep connections open indefinitely. Use a selector or function wait when the application has a better readiness signal.
Wait for application state
When a loading spinner disappears or a global variable is set, use a function wait rather than guessing a delay. The exact fluent method options depend on the installed Browsershot release; consult its source/API for the version you installed. Keep the condition bounded with a timeout suitable for your page so a broken endpoint does not leave a worker waiting forever.
Route 2: capture with Playwright PHP
Install the wrapper and browsers
Follow the Playwright PHP README for Composer installation, its current PHP and Node.js requirements, and the command that installs browser binaries. Pin compatible package and browser versions in production and run the browser installation during image building.

Viewport screenshot
<?php
require __DIR__ . '/vendor/autoload.php';
use PlaywrightPlaywright;
$playwright = Playwright::create();
$browser = $playwright->chromium()->launch(['headless' => true]);
$page = $browser->newPage([
'viewport' => ['width' => 1440, 'height' => 900],
]);
try {
$page->goto('https://example.com/dashboard');
// Replace this with a condition that means the dashboard is rendered.
$page->waitForSelector('.dashboard-ready');
$page->screenshot(['path' => __DIR__ . '/dashboard.png']);
} finally {
$browser->close();
}
Method signatures vary between Playwright PHP releases, so use the README and generated API for the version in your lockfile. The important sequence is launch, create a page, navigate, wait for page-specific readiness, capture, and close in finally.
Use navigation waits deliberately
Playwright’s Page API accepts navigation states including load, domcontentloaded, networkidle, and commit. Its documentation defines network idle as no network connections for at least 500 ms but explicitly labels it discouraged as a general readiness mechanism: “Don’t use this method for testing, rely on web assertions to assess readiness instead.” For screenshots, a selector or assertion tied to the visible result is usually more reliable than a global quiet period.
Full-page screenshot
<?php
// After navigation and a page-specific readiness wait:
$page->screenshot([
'path' => __DIR__ . '/article-full.png',
'fullPage' => true,
]);
A normal screenshot is the current viewport. fullPage captures the scrollable document. It does not guarantee that every deferred element has loaded: pages that lazy-load on scroll may require deliberate scrolling followed by another readiness wait.

Prefer a semantic selector
Choose an element that appears only after the required data is rendered—for example, a table, chart container, or “report complete” marker. Avoid a generic body selector that exists before the application has finished.
Wait for a state transition
If the page removes .loading, sets a data attribute, or exposes a JavaScript flag, wait for that transition. This handles variable network speed better than a fixed two-second delay.

Handle lazy content
For images or cards loaded while scrolling, scroll through the page in increments, wait for image completion or a final count, then capture. A full-page flag changes the image dimensions; it is not a substitute for triggering the site’s lazy-load logic.
Use network idle only when appropriate
Network idle is a defined quiet interval, not proof that fonts, canvas output, animations, or late application work are visually complete. Avoid it on pages with long polling, WebSockets, telemetry, or continuously refreshed content.

Viewport, full page, and reproducible output
- Viewport: captures what a user sees at the configured width and height.
- Full page: captures the scrollable document and is appropriate for long articles or invoices.
- Consistent rendering: record viewport dimensions, browser engine, device scale factor, locale, timezone, and authentication state when comparing images over time.
- Long documents: very tall pages can consume substantial memory. Split extremely long reports or capture sections when a single image is not required.
Screenshot output comes from a browser configuration, not a source-code-only HTML parser. A different browser, font installation, viewport, or device scale can therefore produce a different image.
Production implementation pattern
- Validate and restrict the target URL if users supply it; do not let a screenshot worker reach internal network addresses.
- Create a browser/context and set viewport and any required authentication.
- Navigate and check the response or expected application state.
- Wait for the page-specific selector or function, with a bounded timeout.
- Scroll if the site defers content until it enters the viewport.
- Capture to a unique writable path, then return or stream the file.
- Close the page, context, and browser in a
finallyblock, including on exceptions.
Reuse a browser process for batches when safe, but isolate contexts between users or authentication identities. Limit concurrent pages to the CPU and memory available; a browser launch per request is simpler but adds startup cost.
Troubleshooting incomplete or failed captures
Blank or nearly blank image
Confirm that JavaScript ran and that the browser can reach the URL. Replace a fixed delay with a selector or function that proves the content rendered. Check console and network errors, redirects, and authentication requirements.

Lazy images are missing
Trigger loading by scrolling and wait for the images or content count. Browsershot’s network-idle wait can help when the site becomes quiet after fetching those resources, but it is not suitable for every page.
Network idle never finishes
Long polling, periodic requests, analytics, or streaming may keep connections open. Use a specific selector/function condition and a bounded timeout instead.
Only the top portion appears
Enable fullPage in Playwright or fullPage() in Browsershot. If lower sections are still empty, perform the page’s scroll-and-wait sequence first.
Image differs from a human browser
Set and document the viewport, browser engine, device scale, locale, timezone, cookies, and user agent. Confirm that the same fonts and assets are installed in the runtime.
Browser or runtime mismatch
Check the installed Playwright PHP README and lockfile for current PHP, Node.js, and browser requirements. Reinstall the documented browser binaries in the same environment that runs PHP.

Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, while the service handles browser launch and capture. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.
PHP can call the endpoint with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in PHP:
<?php
$url = 'https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot';
$query = http_build_query([
'access_key' => 'YOUR_API_KEY',
'url' => 'https://stripe.com',
]);
$data = file_get_contents($url . '?' . $query);
if ($data === false) {
throw new RuntimeException('Screenshot request failed');
}
file_put_contents(__DIR__ . '/shot.webp', $data);
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete parameter set. It supports full-page capture, CSS-selector elements, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work to ease migration.
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every plan includes every feature: 1,000 shots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get started.

Cost, reliability, and operational choices
Self-hosted Browsershot or Playwright gives you control over browser versions, network access, and data handling, but you operate browser binaries, scaling, fonts, timeouts, and cleanup. A managed API trades local control for a request-based workflow and service-level billing. For either approach, log URL, readiness condition, browser/runtime version, duration, output type, and failure reason; avoid logging secrets embedded in URLs or headers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can PHP take a screenshot without JavaScript enabled?
It can save an image of server-rendered HTML, but a modern application whose content is created by JavaScript requires a browser engine with JavaScript enabled, such as Puppeteer through Browsershot or Playwright.
Should I wait for the load event or network idle?
Neither is universally sufficient. Use a selector or application state that represents the content you need; use network idle only when the page has a finite loading phase and no persistent connections.
Why does full-page capture still omit content?
Full-page mode changes the capture area but does not necessarily trigger scroll-based lazy loading. Scroll through deferred sections and wait for their content before taking the image.
Which PHP library should a Laravel project choose?
Browsershot is a concise fluent Puppeteer wrapper. Playwright PHP is appropriate when you need Playwright’s broader automation API or documented Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit support. Neither is established as universally faster.
