Bring Your Own Storage (BYOS) means directing a supported product or workflow to storage that you own and control. It is not a universal switch that sends every AI-generated image, video, audio file, prompt, or conversation to your bucket. The scope depends on the product: Microsoft Foundry offers storage connections for selected capabilities, while ComfyUI can write generated files to object storage through workflow nodes or a cloud deployment.

Before you configure BYOS, identify exactly which outputs and other data the integration routes, how it authenticates, and what happens if the storage binding changes. BYOS gives you a place to govern data; it does not by itself provide a backup, retention, cataloguing, or recovery plan.

What BYOS means for generated assets

BYOS is a data-routing and ownership pattern, not one standardized feature shared by AI tools. A product might connect an account you own for a particular capability, or a generation workflow might use an extension or deployment configuration to save output files to a bucket. The phrase “my generated files are in my storage” is only accurate after you establish which files the specific integration actually writes there.

Distinguish among generated output files, input files, model assets, prompts and workflow metadata, conversation or agent state, and service-managed files. They may follow different routes. For example, Microsoft Foundry documents customer storage connections for Agents, Evaluations, Datasets, and Content Understanding, but its architecture documentation also describes Microsoft-managed storage in some file-upload cases. It does not mean that every Foundry artifact automatically lands in one customer bucket. See Microsoft’s Foundry storage connection guide and its architecture overview.

Questions to answer before choosing a setup

  • Which specific feature writes the data, and which data types does it support?
  • Does the binding apply to an account, project, resource, capability, or individual workflow?
  • Does the service use a managed identity and role-based access, or credentials you supply?
  • Can you change the binding later, and what happens if the storage account is moved or deleted?
  • How will you index, retain, back up, restore, and share the files?

Choose an approach that matches your generator

Approach What it is suited to Important boundary
Product-native storage connection A supported service capability that accepts a customer-owned storage account or connection. Coverage is feature-specific; do not assume all product data or outputs use it.
Workflow integration A generator such as ComfyUI that can save output files through installed nodes or other workflow integration. Requires compatible integration and credential configuration; support is not universal or necessarily built in.
Cloud deployment architecture A hosted generation environment whose output directory is connected to object storage as part of deployment. Infrastructure-specific. A cloud reference design is not automatically appropriate for a local workstation.

Use BYOS with Microsoft Foundry

Microsoft’s Foundry documentation describes a few related but distinct arrangements. For most documented BYOS features, the baseline is a storage connection: a shared pointer to an Azure Storage account you own. A capability host can bind a particular capability—especially an Agent—to one of several connections. Speech and Language instead use a resource-level userOwnedStorage property. These arrangements are not interchangeable, so first follow the instructions for the exact Foundry feature you need.

Foundry’s architecture documentation also distinguishes connected customer storage from Microsoft-managed storage. Some direct file-upload cases use managed storage by default; connected Azure Storage is documented for supported operations such as evaluation and batch-processing input and output. In standard Agents setup, customer Azure resources can hold customer data including files, conversations, and vector stores. Verify the data path for the capability in question rather than treating “BYOS enabled” as a promise that all service data uses your account.

Plan the connection and identity before configuring it

  1. Confirm feature support. Check the current Foundry documentation for the capability and data types you intend to route. Determine whether it uses a storage connection, a capability-host binding, or the Speech and Language resource property.
  2. Choose the Azure Storage account and access model. The Foundry guide calls for identity-based access and role assignments. Scope permissions to the required storage resources and ensure the service identity has the necessary access.
  3. Apply the documented security settings. For this Foundry setup, Microsoft specifies disabling shared-key access, requiring TLS 1.2 or later, and disabling public blob access; it recommends disabling cross-tenant replication. Treat these as Microsoft’s guidance for this integration, not universal defaults for every storage service.
  4. Configure network access deliberately. Storage firewall rules or role assignments can prevent the service from reaching the account. Align the account’s network rules and identity permissions with the documented service requirements.
  5. Create the connection and bind the intended capability. Where capability hosts are involved, select the connection for the feature that should use it. Test with representative inputs and inspect the resulting storage location before routing production data.

For Speech and Language, make the resource-level choice before deployment: Microsoft says userOwnedStorage is assigned at resource creation and cannot later be changed without recreating the Foundry resource. The documentation also warns that moving or deleting the bound storage account can stop those capabilities. This makes reversibility and account lifecycle part of the initial design, not an afterthought. See the Speech BYOS setup guide.

Identity and traffic claims are feature-specific

For its Speech BYOS scenario, Microsoft describes authorization through a system-assigned managed identity and Azure role-based access control. It says traffic between Speech and Storage uses the Azure global network. That description applies to the documented Speech integration; it should not be generalized to every Azure product, account configuration, or third-party storage provider.

Save ComfyUI outputs to object storage

ComfyUI users have workflow-oriented options rather than a universal built-in BYOS control. The Backblaze Labs comfyui-cloud-storage project documents nodes for saving generated images, video, and audio to S3-compatible storage, loading image and audio assets, browsing bucket contents, generating sharing URLs, and downloading models. Its listed providers are Backblaze B2, AWS S3, Cloudflare R2, Wasabi, DigitalOcean Spaces, and Google Cloud Storage.

This route involves installing the node package and configuring storage credentials or profile details. Check the project’s current maintenance status, compatibility with your ComfyUI version, security posture, and provider-specific configuration before using it for important workflows. The documentation of a node’s capabilities is not a guarantee that every current ComfyUI and provider combination works without adjustment.

  • SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
  • 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.

Typical workflow planning

  1. Choose the bucket and provider. Decide which account owns the bucket, which region and access policy apply, and whether the integration’s supported provider configuration matches your setup.
  2. Install and configure the nodes. Follow the project’s current installation instructions, then supply the required endpoint, bucket and credential or profile settings using a least-privilege identity where available.
  3. Connect the save node to the intended output. Test with a small generation and verify the object key, file format, metadata, and destination in the bucket.
  4. Test retrieval and sharing separately. If the workflow loads files or generates sharing URLs, verify who can access them and whether links expire or are revocable under your configuration.
  5. Document recovery. Confirm that a file remains accessible after a workflow restart and that your backup or versioning policy can restore an accidentally deleted object.

A separate AWS architecture writes ComfyUI post-inference output files from its output directory to an Amazon S3 bucket using an S3 CSI driver. This is an example for a deployed AWS environment, not a recommended prerequisite for every local ComfyUI user. Follow the AWS reference architecture only if its deployment model fits your environment.

Secure credentials, access and sharing

A storage integration expands the set of systems and identities that can access generated assets. Secure the bucket and the integration together. For Foundry, use the Microsoft-specific identity and hardening instructions above. For a ComfyUI node or other integration, consult that project’s configuration and the storage provider’s current security documentation; the Foundry settings should not be assumed to apply to S3-compatible services.

  • Keep credentials out of workflows and logs. Store secrets using the supported credential mechanism; restrict access to configuration files and rotate exposed credentials promptly.
  • Control public access and links. Do not make a bucket public simply to share a generated asset. If the integration creates URLs, determine whether they are signed, how long they work, and who can create or revoke them.
  • Validate network rules with identity permissions. A correct role assignment does not overcome a firewall that blocks the service, and an open network path does not grant authorization.
  • Review generated metadata. Filenames, prompts, workflow parameters, and embedded metadata may reveal information even when the image itself appears harmless.

BYOS does not replace asset operations

Routing files to your account gives you control of a storage destination; it does not automatically make assets discoverable or recoverable. Set a policy for each application and data type rather than assuming the generator’s defaults are sufficient.

  • Retention and lifecycle: decide how long originals, intermediate outputs, prompts, and logs should remain, and whether older assets move to lower-cost tiers or expire.
  • Backup and restore: maintain a separate recovery path appropriate to the importance of the assets, and periodically test restoration rather than relying on the primary bucket as its own backup.
  • Cataloguing: preserve useful identifiers such as generation time, model or workflow version, prompt reference, output format, and object location, while avoiding unnecessary sensitive data.
  • Exports and portability: establish how a user can retrieve assets and metadata if a service, plugin, identity, or storage binding is retired.
  • Change management: record who can change bucket policies, credentials, region, or bindings, and test the consequences before changing a production account.

The cited product documentation explains storage routing and access mechanics, not a universal retention, backup, asset-cataloguing, or disaster-recovery policy. Those choices remain part of your application and organizational design.

ScreenshotNeo as an option for website screenshot assets

If the asset you need to save is a website screenshot rather than an image produced by a general-purpose generator, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it returns screenshots or PDFs through a website screenshot API and includes an MCP server for AI agents. It is a capture service, not a general-purpose BYOS bucket or a replacement for the Foundry or ComfyUI storage integrations described above. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.

Its API captures a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; configure your workflow to save the response in the destination you govern. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. AI agents can use its MCP server. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Troubleshoot common BYOS failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The service cannot write to the connected account. Missing role assignment, wrong identity, or storage firewall/network rule. Confirm the identity used by the specific capability, its permissions on the intended account or container, and the storage network rules. For Foundry, follow the identity and network guidance in Microsoft’s setup guide.
Some files appear in the bucket, but other data remains elsewhere. The binding covers a particular feature or operation, not every service data category. Check the product architecture and the capability-specific BYOS guide; distinguish uploads, generated outputs, state, and metadata.
Speech or Language stops working after a storage change. The bound account may have been moved or deleted, or the resource configuration may not match the intended account. Review the resource’s userOwnedStorage binding and Microsoft’s lifecycle guidance. Changing the property requires resource recreation.
A ComfyUI save node fails or the file is missing. Credential/profile, endpoint, bucket, permissions, node compatibility, or workflow wiring issue. Verify the node configuration and provider access independently, confirm the save node receives the expected output, then check the bucket’s object path. Consult the project’s current installation and configuration notes.
Generated files save correctly but cannot be shared. Private access is working as configured, but no authorized sharing mechanism was created. Use an approved signed-link or application delivery flow and check its expiry and revocation behavior; do not solve this by making the whole bucket public.

A practical decision checklist

  • Use a native BYOS connection when the exact product capability supports it and its data scope matches your requirement.
  • Use a workflow integration when you need generated ComfyUI outputs routed to object storage and can maintain the integration and credentials.
  • Use a deployment-level storage design when you operate a hosted generation environment and can support its infrastructure complexity.
  • Do not select a provider based on an unsupported “best” ranking: the cited sources do not compare cost, reliability, performance, or regional availability across these options.
  • Document access, retention, backup, recovery, and portability independently of the storage binding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does BYOS mean an AI service stores every generated asset in my bucket?

No. The exact feature and data categories covered depend on the product and binding; verify its capability-specific documentation.

Can every ComfyUI installation save directly to S3?

Not by virtue of ComfyUI alone. The cited routes use an integration node project or a particular cloud deployment architecture.
