A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11To scrape Google Search responsibly, first choose the collection method that matches your purpose. Use Google’s authorized Custom Search JSON API when you need structured rankings at a supported scale; use a permitted HTTP parser or browser only when you have a lawful basis and can follow machine-readable instructions; and use a managed SERP service when operating the rendering, rotation, retries, and parser maintenance yourself is not practical. Store the query context and raw response with every normalized result because Google’s result features vary by query and its markup changes.
The practical answer
A useful SERP scraper is a pipeline, not a CSS selector. Capture the request context, collect a page through an authorized route or permitted fetch, preserve the raw response, normalize the fields you need, and record which optional feature modules appeared. A minimum result record contains:
- query text, locale, device, timestamp, and result-page number;
- rank or position;
- displayed title;
- destination URL and source domain;
- visible snippet; and
- a feature-type label such as organic, featured result, promotion, image, video, or another module.
Keep the original HTML or API JSON beside the normalized records. That lets you audit parser changes and reprocess old captures when Google changes a layout.
What is on a Google SERP?
A search-results page is query-dependent. Google says the features shown can change with the user’s query, so there is no universal fixed sequence of modules. A parser must treat every feature as optional and tolerate markup changes.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Core organic records
For each ordinary result, retain the visible title, destination link, display URL or domain, snippet, and position. Also save the capture timestamp and the locale and device assumptions that produced it. Two requests with the same words can produce different pages when those inputs differ.
Optional feature modules
Model special results as separate modules rather than forcing them into the organic-result schema. A featured result, promotion, image block, answer area, or other enhancement should carry its own feature type and position. A module can contain one item or many items, and it may be absent on the next request.
API fields worth normalizing
The Custom Search JSON representation exposes top-level metadata such as queries, searchInformation, spelling, promotions, and items. An item can include a title, link, display link, snippet, formatted URL, labels, and optional image or page-map data. Normalize these fields while preserving the complete response for later inspection.
Choose a collection method
| Method | Best fit | Strengths | Main burden |
|---|---|---|---|
| Authorized Custom Search JSON API | Structured results within Google’s supported product scope | JSON, documented controls, less markup maintenance | Requires a Programmable Search Engine and API key; availability and quotas can change |
| Browser automation | Rendered modules that a simple HTTP response does not expose | Can observe the page a user sees and apply deterministic device or locale settings | More CPU, latency, selector breakage, consent handling, and compliance work |
| HTTP plus HTML parser | Pages you are explicitly permitted to fetch | Lower overhead than a full browser and easy raw-response retention | Markup changes, missing client-rendered content, and no permission implied by a successful response |
| Managed SERP infrastructure | Teams that need rendering, retries, rotation, and parser operations handled externally | Less infrastructure to run | Evaluate terms, provenance, retention, freshness, feature coverage, controls, limits, and cost |
Use Google’s authorized API when it fits
The documented route is the Custom Search JSON API. It requires a Programmable Search Engine and an API key. Google’s current overview says the API is closed to new customers; existing customers have until January 1, 2027 to transition. Verify the current enrollment and migration status before designing a new dependency.
Recommended Free Tools
For existing customers, Google documents 100 free queries per day, with additional requests priced at $5 per 1,000 queries up to 10,000 per day; the figures were published on the Google for Developers overview crawled seven months ago, so confirm current pricing before budgeting.

Runnable Python pattern
Set CSE_ENDPOINT to the endpoint shown in the current Google documentation, then provide your key and Programmable Search Engine identifier. The script keeps the raw JSON and emits a compact normalized list.
import json
import os
import requests
endpoint = os.environ["CSE_ENDPOINT"]
params = {
"key": os.environ["GOOGLE_API_KEY"],
"cx": os.environ["GOOGLE_CSE_ID"],
"q": "site reliability engineering",
"num": 10,
"start": 1,
"safe": "active",
"dateRestrict": "m6",
}
response = requests.get(endpoint, params=params, timeout=30)
response.raise_for_status()
data = response.json()
with open("serp.raw.json", "w", encoding="utf-8") as f:
json.dump(data, f, ensure_ascii=False, indent=2)
rows = []
for position, item in enumerate(data.get("items", []), start=1):
rows.append({
"position": position,
"title": item.get("title"),
"url": item.get("link"),
"display_url": item.get("displayLink"),
"snippet": item.get("snippet"),
"labels": item.get("labels", []),
})
print(json.dumps(rows, ensure_ascii=False, indent=2))
Equivalent cURL request
curl -G "$CSE_ENDPOINT"
--data-urlencode "key=$GOOGLE_API_KEY"
--data-urlencode "cx=$GOOGLE_CSE_ID"
--data-urlencode "q=site reliability engineering"
--data-urlencode "num=10"
--data-urlencode "start=1"
--data-urlencode "safe=active"
Equivalent Node.js request
const endpoint = process.env.CSE_ENDPOINT;
const q = new URLSearchParams({
key: process.env.GOOGLE_API_KEY,
cx: process.env.GOOGLE_CSE_ID,
q: 'site reliability engineering',
num: '10',
start: '1',
safe: 'active'
});
const res = await fetch(`${endpoint}?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const data = await res.json();
console.log(JSON.stringify(data.items ?? [], null, 2));
Paginate with the documented start value, stop at the 100-result ceiling, and retain the response metadata. Do not assume that an empty items array means the query failed; inspect spelling, promotions, search information, and the HTTP status.

A browser can expose modules that are absent from a simple HTTP response, but it is the most operationally fragile option. Use an explicitly authorized account or consent, conservative request rates, deterministic locale and device settings, and evidence retention.
Design the browser job
- Define the lawful purpose, permitted domains, locale, device profile, and maximum request rate.
- Navigate to the search URL and wait for the page state you actually need rather than sleeping for an arbitrary long interval.
- Capture the final URL, response status, relevant headers, timestamp, and raw page source or rendered HTML.
- Extract fields with versioned selectors and fallback logic. Label modules by type and allow them to be absent.
- Persist a parser version with every record and alert when expected fields disappear or counts change sharply.
Do not treat a successful browser response as permission to automate access. Google’s terms prohibit automated access that violates machine-readable instructions such as robots.txt and describe scraping content that does not belong to the user as conduct that can cause harm or liability.
HTTP plus HTML parsing
For pages you are permitted to fetch, an HTTP client and parser can cost less than a browser. Preserve the status code, response headers, canonical URL, and raw body before parsing. Use semantic fields and several fallback selectors, because class names and nesting are not stable contracts. This method may miss content inserted by client-side scripts and still carries the same permission and rate-limit obligations as browser automation.
Managed SERP services
A managed provider can absorb rendering, proxy rotation, retries, and parser updates. Compare candidates on:

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- authorization and terms for your intended use;
- feature coverage and structured-versus-rendered output;
- country, language, device, and freshness controls;
- rate limits, latency, retry behavior, and outage handling;
- raw-response provenance, retention, and deletion controls; and
- pricing at your actual query volume.
Do not select a service solely because it returns an HTML page. You need a documented data lineage and a way to detect parser or layout changes.
Compliance and data governance checklist
Before collecting results, document:
- the lawful purpose and permission or contractual basis;
- robots.txt and other machine-readable instructions for every target;
- request-rate, concurrency, retry, and backoff limits;
- which personal data is necessary and what will be removed;
- retention duration, access controls, and deletion procedure; and
- the query, locale, timestamp, device, source, and parser version stored with each record.
If you need Google results at scale, start with an authorized API or a provider whose terms explicitly cover the intended use. Recheck Google’s API availability, quotas, layout behavior, and Terms of Service before each production change because all are volatile.
Reliability, performance, and cost practices
Make captures reproducible
Pin locale, country, language, device class, timezone, and timestamp policy. Hash or archive raw responses where your retention policy permits. Separate transport failures, empty result sets, blocked pages, parser failures, and legitimate zero-result searches in your data model.
Control load
Use bounded concurrency, exponential backoff for transient failures, and a queue that can resume from the last completed query. Browser jobs need more memory and have higher startup latency than HTTP or JSON requests; measure those costs with your own workload rather than assuming a universal throughput.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBudget honestly
API pricing and quotas can change, and browser or managed-service costs include compute, proxy, storage, and engineering time. Count retries and failed jobs in your internal budget even when a provider’s billing policy treats them differently. Keep raw evidence only as long as the project requires.
Troubleshooting common failures
HTTP 4xx or an authorization error
Check that the API key, Programmable Search Engine identifier, endpoint, and enabled product match the current documentation. Confirm that the project is eligible while the API’s new-customer closure and transition policy remain in effect.

Empty or unexpectedly short results
Inspect spelling and metadata fields, then verify safe, site restrictions, date limits, language, country, start, and num. A query can legitimately return fewer records than requested.
Fields are missing after a layout change
Retain the raw response, mark the parser version, and add a fallback extractor. Because SERP modules are optional, distinguish “module absent” from “parser failed.”
Browser timeouts or challenge pages
Reduce concurrency, use deterministic waits, record the final URL and status, and stop rather than repeatedly retrying a challenge. Recheck authorization and machine-readable instructions before changing automation behavior.
Different results on repeated runs
Compare locale, device, timestamp, language, country, personalization, and query spelling. Store those inputs so a difference is diagnosable instead of silently treated as a ranking change.

If you need a visual capture of a search page rather than normalized ranking data, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for all options. A one-call WebP capture looks like this:

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I scrape Google results with only an HTML request?
Only fetch pages you are permitted to access and follow robots.txt, terms, and rate limits. An HTTP 200 response does not itself grant permission.
How many results can the Custom Search JSON API return?
Google’s reference documents 10 results per page by default and no more than 100 results for a query.
Should raw SERP HTML be stored?
Store raw HTML or API JSON when your lawful purpose and retention policy allow it; it makes parser changes and disputed records auditable.
Does a screenshot API produce ranking JSON?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures visual pages. Use an authorized structured API when you need normalized titles, links, snippets, and positions.
