DigitalOcean is the easiest general-purpose choice, Linode/Akamai Cloud has one of the clearest Kali deployment paths, AWS and Azure suit enterprise teams, and Vultr or Hetzner can work well for disposable labs. No ordinary VPS replaces a physical Wi-Fi adapter, USB device, or guaranteed GPU.
This comparison was updated for August 18, 2026. It includes providers with Kali-documented deployments and providers that may require a custom image or manual installation. The ranking is an editorial assessment, not a hands-on performance test. Use every Kali system only against systems you own or have written permission to assess; a VPS subscription does not authorize scanning, brute forcing, exploitation, or denial-of-service testing against third parties.
Key takeaways
- DigitalOcean is the best overall Kali VPS for most users because Droplets are simple to deploy, resize, snapshot, automate, and delete.
- Kali officially documents cloud deployment for AWS, Microsoft Azure, DigitalOcean, and Linode/Akamai Cloud; other providers should be treated as custom-image or manual-install candidates unless current first-party documentation says otherwise.
- A practical Kali VPS needs more than Kali’s technical minimum: plan for 1 vCPU and 1 GB RAM for SSH-only work, 2–4 GB RAM for a light desktop, and at least 8 GB RAM for Burp Suite, browsers, and multiple tools.
- An ordinary VPS does not provide a Wi-Fi radio, monitor mode, packet injection, USB passthrough, or guaranteed GPU access.
- Compute is only part of the bill: storage, snapshots, public IPv4, backups, Marketplace software, bandwidth, taxes, and regional pricing can materially change the total.
According to Kali’s official platform guidance, cloud images are quick to deploy and useful for short-term installations, but cloud systems do not provide the same hardware access as bare metal and may not use a customized Kali kernel.
10 Best Kali Linux VPS Hosting Providers
The table separates a provider’s practical usefulness from its Kali image status. “Kali-documented” means Kali’s own documentation covers deployment. “Verify” means the provider may run Kali successfully, but the supplied research does not establish a current native Kali image or provider-specific workflow.

1. DigitalOcean: best overall Kali VPS for simplicity
DigitalOcean is the best overall Kali VPS for most readers who want a straightforward, disposable Linux server rather than a complex enterprise cloud environment. Its Droplets offer a simple control panel, API, CLI, resizing, snapshots, and rapid teardown, while Kali provides a DigitalOcean deployment guide.
DigitalOcean’s Kali workflow can involve uploading a custom image instead of selecting a native Kali template. DigitalOcean says uploaded custom images are associated with the selected location, and image storage is billable, so a custom-image workflow can add both regional and storage considerations.
DigitalOcean’s general pricing page advertises Droplets from $4 per month, while its product comparison displays an example of $6 per month for 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 25 GB storage, and 1,000 GiB transfer. Those figures were visible during the August 2026 research pass and are not a universal total: region, plan, billing date, storage, IPv4, taxes, and optional services can change the bill. DigitalOcean also states that Droplets use per-second billing from January 1, 2026, with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01, whichever is higher. See the current Droplet pricing terms before ordering.
- Best for: beginners, temporary web-testing labs, SSH, light remote desktops, and API-driven deployments.
- Strengths: clear product model, easy snapshots, simple rebuilds, and fast provisioning.
- Weaknesses: custom-image storage and location rules; no ordinary Wi-Fi, USB, or guaranteed GPU access.
- Verdict: choose DigitalOcean first when ease of deployment matters more than specialized hardware or enterprise networking.
2. Linode/Akamai Cloud: best documented VPS workflow
Linode/Akamai Cloud is the best officially documented traditional VPS-style choice when the reader wants a controlled Kali installation. Kali documents both selecting Kali as the distribution and deploying Kali through the Marketplace in its Linode cloud guide.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The documented Kali distribution is described as a bare-bones installation containing kali-linux-core. That is useful for a smaller, deliberately selected toolset, but it is not equivalent to a complete desktop workstation. A user may still need to install XFCE, a browser, proxy tools, remote-access software, and additional Kali metapackages.
- Best for: Linux learners, professionals who want a minimal image, and long-running labs with snapshots and predictable administration.
- Strengths: Kali-specific documentation, a controlled starting point, and a familiar VPS workflow.
- Weaknesses: the bare-bones route requires additional setup; hardware-dependent wireless work remains unsuitable.
- Verdict: select Linode/Akamai when documented Kali deployment is more important than the absolute lowest price.
3. AWS EC2: best for advanced and enterprise environments
AWS EC2 is the best Kali VPS platform for advanced users who need private networks, identity controls, automation, many instance families, or AWS services around the assessment machine. Kali lists AWS among its cloud deployment targets, provides an AWS deployment guide, and Kali Linux is available through the AWS Marketplace listing.
AWS is powerful but rarely the simplest or cheapest always-on desktop. EC2 billing can include the instance, EBS storage, public IPv4, snapshots, data transfer, Marketplace charges, and related services. AWS directs customers to its pricing calculator, and the exact cost depends on region, instance type, operating-system image, storage volume, public-IP status, traffic, and purchase model. AWS’s on-demand model also has service-specific billing details, so do not copy a single hourly figure into a general comparison.
- Best for: enterprise testing, infrastructure as code, short-lived automated instances, and complex private networks.
- Strengths: broad instance choice, mature IAM, security groups, snapshots, automation, and regional reach.
- Weaknesses: componentized billing and a steeper networking and account-management learning curve.
- Verdict: use AWS when the Kali host belongs inside an AWS architecture; use a simpler VPS for a standalone student lab.
4. Microsoft Azure: best for Microsoft-centric security teams
Microsoft Azure is the best Kali VPS choice for organizations already using Microsoft Entra ID, Defender, Sentinel, Windows workloads, private networks, and enterprise governance. Kali lists Azure as an official cloud platform and provides Azure cloud documentation.
Azure VM costs vary with region, VM family, disk type, public IP, bandwidth, reservations, and the selected image. A Kali Linux VM should generally be evaluated as a Linux compute workload, but the exact deployment image and Marketplace terms must be checked during provisioning.
- Best for: corporate security teams, hybrid environments, and testing Azure-hosted applications.
- Strengths: enterprise identity, policy, monitoring, private networking, and integration with Microsoft security services.
- Weaknesses: more complex than necessary for one inexpensive personal VPS; no ordinary Wi-Fi or USB access.
- Verdict: choose Azure when Microsoft integration and governance outweigh simple VPS pricing.
5. Vultr: best for fast, flexible global deployment
Vultr is a strong practical alternative for consultants, developers, and students who value quick provisioning, many locations, snapshots, hourly or monthly options, and disposable systems. The supplied research does not verify a current native Kali image, so check Vultr’s image catalog before purchase and be prepared to use a custom image or manual installation.
Rank #2
Vultr’s official documentation confirms GPU-enabled images as a product category, but that documentation does not establish Kali-specific GPU compatibility. GPU availability, drivers, region capacity, price, and acceptable-use restrictions must be verified for the exact plan.
- Best for: short-lived labs, global location comparisons, and fast general-purpose VPS deployment.
- Strengths: quick setup, broad geographic selection, and flexible instance choices.
- Weaknesses: Kali image status needs verification; hardware-dependent testing is still not appropriate on ordinary plans.
- Verdict: choose Vultr when deployment speed and location flexibility matter, but verify the Kali route first.
6. Hetzner Cloud: best price-to-resource candidate
Hetzner Cloud is a compelling value-oriented candidate for experienced Linux users, particularly in supported European regions. The supplied research does not verify a current official Kali Marketplace image or current plan prices, so this recommendation is conditional: confirm the live console, image-import method, region, and total price before committing.
Check outbound traffic rules, public-IP charges, account approval, capacity, and abuse handling as carefully as CPU and RAM. A low headline price is not useful if the required region is unavailable or the chosen custom image cannot boot correctly.
- Best for: budget-conscious experienced users and CPU/RAM-heavy labs in suitable regions.
- Strengths: potentially attractive resource economics and European availability.
- Weaknesses: current Kali image status, regional pricing, and policy details require verification.
- Verdict: a possible value leader, not a universal first recommendation for beginners.
7. Google Cloud: best for cloud-native networking and automation
Google Cloud is a serious Kali VPS option for users already working with Compute Engine, VPC networking, IAM, snapshots, automation, and cloud logging. Google Cloud is usually more infrastructure than a standalone Kali lab needs.
Kali’s official Get Kali page names AWS, DigitalOcean, Linode, and Azure among its cloud options; the supplied research does not establish Google Cloud as a named official Kali cloud-image destination. Treat Google Cloud as a generic cloud deployment option unless current Kali or Google documentation confirms a supported image. Budget for persistent disks, egress, public IPs, and any surrounding cloud services.
- Best for: automated labs, private VPC testing, and users already using Google Cloud.
- Strengths: flexible machine sizing, mature networking, IAM, snapshots, and automation.
- Weaknesses: more difficult pricing and setup for a small independent lab.
- Verdict: excellent for a cloud-native team, excessive for many first Kali VPS deployments.
8. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure: best potential credit or free-resource route
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure may suit students and experimenters who qualify for current credits or free-resource programs, but Oracle should never be presented as a guaranteed free Kali VPS. Eligibility, account verification, quota approval, region capacity, and promotional terms can change.

Architecture deserves special attention if considering ARM instances: verify that the current Kali image, packages, provider boot process, and required tools support the selected architecture.
- Best for: eligible learners, small disposable labs, and users already operating Oracle infrastructure.
- Strengths: potentially low-cost entry when current program terms and capacity align.
- Weaknesses: inconsistent availability and account or quota friction can make time-critical work difficult.
- Verdict: worth checking for eligible users, but not the safest universal recommendation.
9. OVHcloud: best for European and network-heavy deployments
OVHcloud is a significant European infrastructure provider with VPS, Public Cloud, and dedicated-server products. OVHcloud can be useful when a reader wants European infrastructure, greater network capacity, or a possible path from a virtual server to dedicated hardware.
Do not compare an OVHcloud VPS, Public Cloud VM, and dedicated server as if they were the same product. Hardware access, virtualization, bandwidth, storage, image support, pricing, and acceptable-use policies can differ by product family. The supplied research does not verify a current standard Kali VPS price or native Kali image, so check the exact regional product before publishing or purchasing.
- Best for: European users, network-heavy authorized testing, and customers who may later need dedicated hardware.
- Strengths: broad infrastructure portfolio and a choice of virtual and physical products.
- Weaknesses: product selection and regional pricing require careful comparison.
- Verdict: a credible infrastructure option, but not the simplest first Kali VPS.
10. Kamatera: best for custom sizing and hourly flexibility
Kamatera is a flexible candidate when standard VPS plans do not match the required CPU, RAM, storage, or billing duration. The supplied research does not verify a current native Kali image, exact price, or specific Kali workflow, so confirm those details before ordering and plan for a generic-cloud or manual installation if necessary.
Recommended Free Tools
- Best for: custom resource combinations and short-lived test environments.
- Strengths: granular sizing and hourly flexibility.
- Weaknesses: less verified Kali-specific documentation in this comparison.
- Verdict: useful when sizing flexibility matters more than a documented Kali image.
How much RAM and storage does a Kali VPS need?
A Kali VPS needs different resources depending on whether the server is SSH-only or a graphical security workstation. Kali’s installation documentation gives a technical baseline, while the practical desktop recommendations below are editorial sizing guidance rather than universal provider requirements.
| Use case | Practical starting size | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| SSH-only commands, reconnaissance, and scripts | 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 20–25 GB disk | Suitable for lightweight command-line tools; little room for a desktop |
| Light desktop and common tools | 2 vCPU, 2–4 GB RAM, 40–60 GB disk | Reasonable for XFCE, terminals, and modest browser use |
| Burp Suite, browsers, proxying, and multiple tools | 2–4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 60–100 GB disk | More suitable for large web applications and concurrent tools |
| Password auditing or CPU-heavy cracking | Dedicated or high-CPU instance | Do not assume a cheap shared VPS is appropriate |
| GPU workloads | Provider GPU instance | Check availability, drivers, cost, and acceptable-use rules |
| Nested virtualization | Provider-approved instance | Nested virtualization must be explicitly exposed and verified |
| Wireless packet injection | Physical or dedicated compatible hardware | An ordinary VPS generally lacks the required Wi-Fi radio |
Kali’s published baseline allows as little as 128 MB RAM, recommends 512 MB for a minimal SSH-oriented installation, and lists approximately 2 GB of disk space for that kind of installation. Kali recommends aiming for at least 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk for the default Xfce desktop with kali-linux-default, and at least 8 GB RAM for resource-heavy tools such as Burp Suite. Those minimums are not sensible targets for every graphical workload.
How should you choose a Kali VPS?
1. Check the Kali deployment route
Give preference to official Kali provider documentation, then a current native image or Marketplace listing, then a reliable custom-image workflow, and finally a manual installation. A provider running Debian does not automatically support Kali: cloud-init, kernels, boot configuration, metadata services, networking, image format, and architecture can differ.
2. Match the instance to the workload
Shared or burstable vCPUs are usually adequate for SSH and light tools. Dedicated or high-CPU instances are more appropriate for sustained CPU-heavy work. NVMe storage, disk expansion, snapshots, transfer allowances, region latency, high-memory plans, and GPU availability matter more than a provider’s lowest advertised plan.
3. Calculate the complete bill
Before deployment, identify compute, storage, snapshots, backups, public IPv4, bandwidth or egress, Marketplace software, support, and taxes. Mark the region, currency, plan, billing period, and date observed. DigitalOcean’s pricing pages show why headline prices need context; AWS’s EC2 pricing documentation likewise separates instance pricing from related infrastructure costs.
4. Read security-testing policies
Review the provider’s acceptable-use and abuse policies before scanning. Providers may restrict unauthorized port scanning, brute force, malware, botnets, spam, denial-of-service testing, traffic amplification, and Internet-wide scanning. Authorized testing can still resemble abuse traffic, so obtain written scope, use rate limits, notify the provider when required, retain logs, and stop if the provider raises a concern.
5. Confirm hardware access
Ordinary VPS products generally do not expose Wi-Fi radios, monitor mode, packet injection, USB or Bluetooth adapters, direct PCIe access, or dedicated GPUs. Kali’s cloud guidance distinguishes cloud limitations from bare-metal access. For wireless testing, use local bare metal, a dedicated server with compatible hardware, a remote physical lab, a training platform, or a VPN-connected local device.
How do you deploy Kali Linux on a VPS?
The safest deployment route is the provider image or Marketplace image documented by Kali. If no supported image exists, use a provider-approved Kali generic cloud image or manual installation only after checking architecture, image format, cloud-init, metadata, DHCP, boot mode, and kernel compatibility.

Provider or Marketplace image
- Select the provider’s current Kali image or Kali Marketplace entry.
- Choose at least 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM for a normal desktop, with 40–60 GB of storage for common tools and browser data.
- Use SSH keys, restrict SSH to a known source IP where possible, and configure the provider firewall before exposing services.
- Update the system after first login:
sudo apt update sudo apt full-upgrade -y - Install only the toolset required for the lab. For a core installation, an example is:
sudo apt install kali-linux-coreFor a fuller standard tool collection, an example is:
sudo apt install kali-linux-default - Verify the clean baseline, create a snapshot, and record the image and package state.
- Destroy or stop the instance and remove associated resources when the engagement ends.
Generic cloud-image or custom-image route
Kali publishes generic cloud images for x64 and ARM64 environments, but the provider must accept the image format and initialize its networking and metadata correctly. DigitalOcean’s custom-image documentation illustrates the operational details: uploaded images can be tied to a location and image storage can incur charges.
Rank #4
Check whether the provider supports custom images, cloud-init, the required metadata service, the selected architecture, UEFI or legacy BIOS, the provider’s kernel expectations, image import limits, and regional image storage charges. Never assume that a desktop ISO will boot like a provider-native cloud image.
How do you verify that a new Kali VPS works?
Run the following checks from the VPS console or SSH session:
uname -a
cat /etc/os-release
ip addr
ip route
sudo apt update
ping -c 3 1.1.1.1
The operating-system file should identify Kali, a network interface should have an address, a default route should exist, outbound connectivity should work, and apt update should complete without repository errors. If the system has no network, inspect the provider console and run:
ip link
ip addr
ip route
systemctl status systemd-networkd
Then check provider firewall and security-group rules and consult the provider-specific Kali documentation. Rebuild from a supported image if the custom image does not initialize reliably.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the main Kali VPS failure modes?
The VPS has too little RAM
Low memory causes desktop freezes, browser and Burp Suite failures, package-installation errors, and Linux out-of-memory kills. Stop nonessential services, use SSH-only mode, install a smaller metapackage, resize to 4–8 GB RAM, or add swap cautiously. Swap improves survivability but does not make a low-memory VPS perform like a workstation.
Kali boots without networking
Unsupported cloud-init, wrong interface naming, missing metadata integration, incompatible image formats, and provider firewall rules can all cause a network failure. Inspect interfaces, routes, initialization services, DHCP, and security groups from the provider console. A clean rebuild from a supported image is often faster than repairing an incompatible import.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe user expects Wi-Fi auditing
A VPS may install Aircrack-ng and related packages, but a normal VPS has no physical Wi-Fi adapter for monitor mode or packet injection. Software availability is not hardware availability.
The user expects GPU cracking
A standard VPS generally has no GPU. A GPU-backed instance may be possible, but drivers, Kali compatibility, availability, cost, and acceptable-use rules must be checked for the exact provider and region. Vultr’s GPU-enabled image documentation confirms a GPU product category, not automatic Kali GPU compatibility.
The provider investigates scanning
Authorized traffic can resemble abuse. Keep written authorization and scope, rate-limit probes, avoid unrelated public ranges, retain logs, notify the provider where policy requires it, and prefer a private lab network for aggressive testing. A Kali tool’s presence does not make every use acceptable to a cloud provider.
Public IPv4, snapshots, or storage cost extra
Cloud bills can continue after the server is deleted if snapshots, custom images, block volumes, backups, reserved addresses, load balancers, or Marketplace subscriptions remain. Cleanup must include every attached resource, not just the VM.

Kali changes over time
Kali is a rolling distribution: updates ship as they become available, while point-release images are generated quarterly. The Kali page currently identifies Kali 2026.2 as a point release. Distinguish the image publication date, the current repository state, and the point-release version. A snapshot preserves a known state; it does not guarantee that a newly rebuilt VPS uses the same packages.
When should you use something other than a Kali VPS?
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| SSH tools, scripting, web-lab access | General-purpose VPS | Low friction, disposable, remotely reachable, and easy to snapshot |
| Wi-Fi monitor mode or packet injection | Bare-metal laptop or remote physical lab | Requires a compatible physical radio and hardware access |
| USB or Bluetooth testing | Local or dedicated physical hardware | Ordinary VPS platforms normally do not expose USB or Bluetooth devices |
| GPU password auditing | GPU cloud instance or dedicated GPU system | Standard shared VPS plans do not provide a GPU |
| Run another VM inside Kali | Provider-approved nested-virtualization instance | Nested virtualization must be explicitly supported |
| Low-overhead isolated tool access | Kali container | Lower overhead, but limited hardware access and potentially harder inbound networking |
| Structured learning and legal targets | Security-training platform or private lab | Provides controlled scope instead of exposing aggressive traffic to public networks |
Kali distinguishes virtual machines, cloud images, containers, and bare-metal installations. Containers can have lower overhead, but containers do not solve hardware-access limitations and can make inbound connections more complicated.
How do you secure and clean up a Kali VPS?
- Use SSH keys and disable password authentication after confirming key access.
- Restrict SSH and desktop ports at the provider firewall and host firewall.
- Use a VPN, private network, SSH tunnel, or secure bastion for graphical access; do not expose RDP or VNC directly to the Internet without strong controls.
- Install only the required tools and services.
- Update Kali and create a clean snapshot before testing.
- Keep an authorization document, target scope, timestamps, and activity logs.
- After the lab ends, delete the VPS, attached volumes, snapshots, custom images, reserved IPs, load balancers, and any Marketplace subscriptions.
- Review the next invoice for residual storage, IP, bandwidth, or backup charges.
For most people, the final choice is straightforward: use DigitalOcean for the simplest general-purpose Kali lab, Linode/Akamai Cloud for a documented VPS workflow, AWS or Azure when the lab belongs inside an enterprise cloud, and a physical or dedicated system when wireless, USB, nested virtualization, or specialized GPU access is central to the work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Kali Linux run on any VPS?
Kali Linux can run on many x86_64 cloud servers, but not every VPS has a compatible image, boot process, cloud-init configuration, kernel, architecture, or acceptable-use policy. Confirm the provider’s native-image or custom-image workflow before purchase.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is a Kali Linux VPS legal?
Running Kali Linux on a VPS is generally a legitimate use of cloud infrastructure, but testing must be limited to systems you own or have written authorization to assess. Provider policies may separately restrict scanning, brute force, malware, denial-of-service testing, or other traffic.
Does a Kali VPS support Wi-Fi monitor mode and packet injection?
An ordinary Kali VPS generally does not support Wi-Fi monitor mode or packet injection because the VPS lacks direct access to a physical Wi-Fi radio. Use a compatible local device, remote physical lab, or dedicated hardware instead.
How much RAM does a Kali VPS need?
Use about 1 GB RAM for SSH-only lightweight work, 2–4 GB for a light XFCE desktop, and at least 8 GB for Burp Suite, browsers, and several tools at once. Kali’s technical minimums are lower, but technical boot requirements are not the same as comfortable desktop requirements.
Can I use Burp Suite on a Kali VPS?
Yes, Burp Suite can run on a Kali VPS, but a practical starting point is at least 8 GB RAM, particularly for large web applications or several concurrent tools. A low-memory VPS may freeze, swap heavily, or be terminated by the Linux out-of-memory killer.
