The six technologies in “6 Top JavaScript UI Frameworks & Libraries for 2020” are Sencha Ext JS, React, Angular, Vue, Ember, and Svelte 3. They are not equivalent choices: React is primarily a UI library, Angular and Ember are integrated frameworks, Vue is progressive, Svelte 3 is compiler-oriented, and Ext JS is a commercial framework and component suite.

This is a historical comparison of the six options selected by SitePoint in an article published on July 7, 2020 and marked updated November 11, 2024. “Top” means notable choices in that article, not an objective ranking or a recommendation for every project in 2026. The original article was created in partnership with Sencha, a disclosure that matters when interpreting Ext JS’s first position and extensive coverage. See the original SitePoint article and its partnership disclosure.

Key takeaways

  • React was presented as a flexible UI library, while Angular and Ember supplied more integrated application structure.
  • Vue occupied a middle ground in 2020: developers could add it to an existing page or use it for a larger single-page application.
  • Svelte 3 moved much of its component work to the build step and updated the DOM directly rather than relying primarily on a virtual DOM.
  • Ext JS stood apart as a commercial framework and component suite with more than 140 pre-integrated widgets, including grids, trees, forms, charts, and layouts.
  • The right choice depended on application complexity, team expertise, component requirements, performance measurements, maintenance expectations, and licensing—not popularity alone.

What does “JavaScript UI framework” mean?

“JavaScript UI framework” is a broad category that combines products with materially different responsibilities. A UI library usually provides rendering primitives and component patterns while leaving routing, data fetching, state management, forms, testing, and application architecture to the team. React is the clearest example among these six.

An application framework generally supplies stronger conventions and may integrate routing, build tooling, dependency injection, forms, testing guidance, state patterns, or other application concerns. Angular and Ember fit this description more closely than React.

Vue was designed for incremental adoption: it could act as a view-layer library in a small enhancement or become the foundation of a larger application through its surrounding ecosystem. Svelte 3 used a compiler-oriented model, transforming components during the build process. Ext JS belonged to a third category: a commercial, integrated framework and component suite designed particularly for data-heavy business software.

The distinction matters because a comparison that labels all six as interchangeable “frameworks” hides important costs. A React project may require several additional package and architecture decisions. An Ext JS project may require fewer component choices but creates a stronger vendor and licensing commitment.

How should JavaScript UI technologies be compared?

The most useful comparison starts with the project rather than a popularity contest. The original SitePoint article emphasized popularity, productivity, component reuse, performance, documentation, and ecosystem support. A practical evaluation should also examine the following:

  • Architecture: Is the technology a library, progressive framework, full application framework, or commercial component suite?
  • Developer experience: How much boilerplate, convention, tooling, and framework-specific knowledge does the team need?
  • Component coverage: Does the core product provide the grids, editors, charts, forms, accessibility features, and layouts the application needs?
  • Application structure: What must the team add for routing, state, forms, data fetching, testing, internationalization, and server rendering?
  • Performance model: How much work occurs at runtime, during compilation, in the browser’s main thread, and during DOM updates?
  • Scalability: Is the technology suitable for an embedded widget, a marketing site, a dashboard, or a large multi-team application?
  • Ecosystem and hiring: Can the team find documentation, integrations, packages, and experienced developers in its market?
  • Governance and maintenance: Is there a credible upgrade path, stable stewardship, and support model for the expected product lifetime?
  • Licensing and cost: Are the core tools open source, commercially licensed, or dependent on paid component packages?
  • Accessibility and security: What does the technology provide, and what must the product team still test and guarantee?

How do the six 2020 choices differ?

Technology Practical category Distinctive 2020 idea Best fit Main trade-off
Sencha Ext JS Commercial integrated framework and component suite Large built-in enterprise and data component catalog Data-heavy business applications License cost and vendor commitment
React UI library Composable components and broad ecosystem choice Teams wanting architectural flexibility More stack decisions outside the core library
Angular Integrated application framework Strong conventions, tooling, and TypeScript-first development Structured large applications Learning curve and framework weight
Vue Progressive framework Incremental adoption and approachable templates Small-to-medium apps and gradual enhancement More ecosystem decisions at larger scale
Ember Opinionated application framework Convention over configuration Long-lived, convention-driven products Less flexibility and a narrower hiring market in some regions
Svelte 3 Compiler-oriented UI framework Build-time transformation and direct DOM updates Concise interfaces where runtime overhead matters Younger ecosystem and talent pool in 2020

1. What was Sencha Ext JS best for?

Sencha Ext JS was a comprehensive commercial JavaScript framework for cross-platform, data-intensive applications. The 2020 SitePoint article described more than 140 pre-integrated components, including grids, trees, lists, forms, menus, toolbars, and calendars. That built-in catalog made Ext JS materially different from a general-purpose UI library. The component description is documented in the SitePoint comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ext JS was best suited to enterprise dashboards, internal business systems, and back-office applications in which sophisticated grids, trees, forms, charts, data stores, and layouts were central to the product. Teams could avoid assembling a large number of unrelated third-party packages and could instead adopt one integrated component ecosystem.

What were Ext JS’s strengths?

  • A large catalog of ready-made business and data components.
  • Integrated data, layout, and interface systems.
  • Enterprise-oriented documentation and commercial support.
  • Less need to evaluate and combine separate vendors for fundamental widgets.
  • Particular value when complex data grids were more important than a minimal JavaScript footprint.

What were Ext JS’s trade-offs?

Ext JS required a commercial licensing decision and created more vendor dependence than the open-source core technologies in the list. The framework also demanded a greater product commitment than a lightweight library, making it excessive for a brochure site, simple content interface, or small interactive widget. Its component model and tooling could require specialized knowledge.

The original article included a claim that a Sencha data grid was “300x faster” than leading competitors. That figure should not be treated as a universal performance fact: the benchmark methodology, versions, dataset, browser, workload, and competing products must be known before drawing a general conclusion. Measure the actual grid workload on the devices and browsers that matter to the product.

How did Ext JS licensing look in the later update period?

As listed on Sencha’s pricing page in August 2026, Ext JS had a free Community Edition and paid Pro and Enterprise plans. The page listed Pro at $1,499 per developer per year and Enterprise at $1,899 per developer per year; pricing can change, so teams should verify the current Sencha Ext JS plans before budgeting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sencha’s Community Edition has eligibility restrictions. The Community Edition terms state a $10,000 annual-revenue threshold and team-size conditions for eligible startups and nonprofits. Legal, procurement, and compliance teams should read the applicable license rather than treating “free” as unrestricted commercial use.

Sencha announced that Ext JS would move to subscription-only licensing effective April 1, 2026, with new perpetual-license sales ending March 31, 2026. That is a later commercial change, not a description of the original 2020 product context; the Sencha subscription licensing announcement gives the company’s stated transition details.

2. Why was React a leading flexible choice?

React was presented in 2020 as an open-source UI library centered on declarative, reusable components. React’s small core API, broad community, flexible stack choices, server rendering through Node.js, and React Native connection made it attractive to teams that wanted control over architecture rather than a single prescribed application framework. SitePoint’s historical description appears in the 2020 comparison.

React was a strong fit for product interfaces built from reusable components, teams that already had React expertise, and organizations that valued a broad package ecosystem and large hiring pool. React could be combined with different routing, state-management, styling, testing, data-fetching, and server-rendering solutions.

What did React require teams to decide?

React itself did not prescribe a complete application architecture. A team still needed to select or define approaches for routing, data fetching, forms, state management, styling, testing, accessibility, internationalization, and server rendering. That flexibility was a strength for experienced teams, but it could also produce inconsistent patterns when separate teams made incompatible choices.

React’s rendering model was not a performance guarantee. Actual results depended on component design, data flow, JavaScript payload, network conditions, browser work, and update frequency. A React recommendation should therefore be based on measured user experience rather than the statement that React is simply “fast.”

3. When was Angular the better structured framework?

Angular was an integrated, open-source application framework associated with Google and aimed at structured desktop and mobile web applications. The 2020 SitePoint article highlighted cross-platform ambitions, tooling, performance, two-way data binding, directives, and TypeScript, while also noting that TypeScript and Angular’s concepts could create a significant learning curve. Those historical points are summarized in the SitePoint article.

Angular was a strong fit for large applications, enterprise development groups, and multi-team products that benefited from consistent conventions. TypeScript-first development, integrated tooling, dependency-injection patterns, and stronger framework opinions reduced the number of foundational architecture decisions each team had to make.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What were Angular’s costs?

  • Developers had to learn more framework concepts before becoming productive.
  • The framework could feel heavy for a small interactive feature or simple website.
  • Teams that delayed upgrades could face substantial framework maintenance work.
  • Two-way binding could simplify some form scenarios, but poorly structured data flow could become harder to reason about.

Angular’s structure was valuable when consistency mattered more than minimalism. The same structure could feel restrictive when a team needed a tiny enhancement or preferred to assemble its own front-end stack.

4. Why was Vue considered approachable and progressive?

Vue was a free, open-source, component-based progressive framework that could be added incrementally to an existing page or used as the foundation for a larger single-page application. Developers familiar with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript could generally approach Vue’s template and component model without first adopting as many framework-specific concepts as Angular required. The historical positioning comes from SitePoint’s 2020 overview.

Vue was a good fit for teams that wanted gradual enhancement, small-to-medium applications, approachable templates, and a balance between React’s flexibility and Angular’s stronger structure. Vue could start with a small interactive region and grow as the application’s needs increased.

What should Vue teams plan beyond the core?

Vue’s core did not automatically settle every application concern. Larger products still needed deliberate decisions about routing, state, data fetching, testing, forms, accessibility, internationalization, and team conventions. Flexibility could remain useful, but multiple teams needed written standards to prevent different parts of the same application from adopting incompatible patterns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Descriptions such as “small” or “fast” were context-dependent. Vue performance depended on the application’s bundle, component structure, update patterns, device, network, and workload, so teams should measure real user journeys instead of relying on a framework label.

5. When did Ember’s conventions make sense?

Ember was a free, open-source, convention-driven framework for ambitious web applications. Its central promise was convention over configuration: the framework supplied established patterns so teams made fewer architectural decisions independently. SitePoint emphasized Ember’s built-in application functionality, backwards compatibility, mature documentation, and battle-tested approach in the 2020 comparison.

Ember was best suited to long-lived products and teams that preferred a coherent, integrated framework over a collection of independently selected packages. Strong conventions could improve consistency across a large codebase and reduce debates about how common features should be organized.

What were Ember’s limitations?

Convention-heavy architecture could feel restrictive to developers who wanted maximum flexibility. Ember was also less fashionable or broadly adopted than React, Angular, or Vue in many new-project conversations, which could affect hiring and ecosystem access depending on location and market. Those considerations should be investigated with current local data rather than assumed universally.

A team should not declare Ember “dead” or automatically obsolete without current adoption evidence. The relevant 2020 decision was whether Ember’s conventions, integrated patterns, and maintenance approach matched the product—not whether it appeared most often in general technology discussions.

6. What made Svelte 3 different?

Svelte 3 was notable for compiling components during the build process and generating code that directly updated the DOM, rather than relying primarily on the virtual-DOM approach commonly associated with React and Vue. The build-time model could reduce runtime framework work and allow concise component code, but it was not a guarantee that every Svelte application would be faster. SitePoint’s historical explanation is available in the original comparison.

Svelte 3 was a good fit for developers who liked writing components with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript together, teams interested in a compile-time UI model, and interfaces where runtime overhead was an important consideration. The technology was especially appealing to developers who wanted less boilerplate in many component implementations.

What did teams give up by choosing Svelte 3?

In 2020, Svelte had a smaller ecosystem and talent pool than React, Angular, or Vue. Teams had to consider available integrations, testing tools, documentation, hiring, and long-term maintenance in addition to the compiler’s output. A compile-time transformation did not remove application-level problems such as excessive data, inefficient algorithms, network latency, large assets, or expensive browser work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The name matters: the original comparison specifically covered Svelte 3. Svelte 3 should not be silently replaced with a current Svelte release while claiming to reproduce the 2020 list. Current versions, release status, and ecosystem comparisons require a separate, freshly verified review.

Which framework should you choose for a specific project?

No single option was the universal winner. The following scenarios turn the historical differences into a practical shortlist.

Project situation Most natural 2020 shortlist Why Check before committing
Small interactive site or gradual enhancement Vue or React Both could be introduced without adopting the full structure of an enterprise framework. Bundle size, page integration, accessibility, and long-term ownership.
Large structured single-page application Angular or Ember Integrated conventions can improve consistency across teams. Learning curve, upgrade process, hiring, and team experience.
Data-heavy enterprise dashboard Ext JS, or a framework plus commercial components Ext JS supplied an integrated catalog of business-oriented widgets. Grid requirements, licensing, support, accessibility, and vendor dependence.
Team already experienced with React React Existing knowledge and ecosystem familiarity can outweigh the need to assemble more of the stack. Architecture standards, package governance, and total toolchain cost.
Concise components and compile-time experimentation Svelte 3 Build-time transformation and direct DOM updates were its defining technical distinction. Ecosystem maturity, hiring, testing, integrations, and measured performance.
Long-lived product with strong shared conventions Ember, Angular, or Ext JS Each offered more integrated patterns or components than a minimal UI library. Governance, support, upgrades, licensing, and future staffing.

What should you measure before deciding?

Framework internals are useful for understanding trade-offs, but they are not substitutes for product measurements. Test the candidate implementation with representative data, devices, browsers, and user journeys.

  • Initial JavaScript payload and downloaded asset size.
  • Time to interactive and the time required for the first useful interaction.
  • Main-thread work during startup and common updates.
  • Rendering and update cost for the largest tables, forms, lists, or charts.
  • Memory use during long sessions.
  • Real-user performance on the target network and device range.
  • Input responsiveness, keyboard navigation, screen-reader behavior, and other accessibility requirements.
  • Developer productivity after the initial learning period, not only during a tutorial.
  • Upgrade effort, testing coverage, package maintenance, and the cost of recruiting or training developers.

Virtual DOM usage, direct DOM updates, and compilation describe implementation strategies. None of those strategies alone proves that one framework will be faster for a particular application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do commercial component suites compare with open-source libraries?

Commercial component suites trade license cost and vendor dependence for integrated widgets, documentation, support, and reduced assembly work. Ext JS is the clearest example in this six-item list. React, Angular, Vue, Ember, and Svelte provide the core technologies, but production teams may still add design systems, premium grids, charts, editors, testing infrastructure, hosted services, consulting, or support.

For teams committed to React, Angular, Vue, or jQuery, DevExpress JavaScript UI components represent a different commercial model: a component and development-tools purchase that works across several front-end frameworks rather than requiring the team to adopt Ext JS as its single framework architecture. The DevExpress buying page lists U.S.-dollar pricing and a stated 60-day refund policy; confirm current terms before purchase.

Approach Likely advantage Likely cost or risk Best question to ask
Open-source core plus selected packages Architectural freedom and low initial license cost Integration, governance, support, and package compatibility work Can the team maintain a coherent stack?
Ext JS Integrated framework and large business-component catalog Per-developer licensing and vendor commitment Does reduced assembly work justify the license?
Commercial components for React, Angular, Vue, or jQuery Premium widgets while retaining an existing front-end framework Commercial terms and additional vendor dependency Does the component vendor fit the team’s chosen framework?

Open-source availability does not mean zero total cost, and a commercial license does not automatically make a product better. Compare development time, component quality, accessibility work, support, procurement, upgrades, and the number of developers who need seats.

What did the original list miss or oversimplify?

  1. It presented unlike categories together. React, Angular, Vue, Ember, Svelte 3, and Ext JS did not offer the same amount of application structure or built-in UI coverage.
  2. It needed stronger sponsorship context. SitePoint disclosed its Sencha partnership, but readers should account for that relationship when interpreting the ordering and Ext JS emphasis.
  3. It blurred core features and ecosystem features. Routing, state management, server rendering, mobile development, testing, and component catalogs may come from separate tools or products.
  4. It gave limited project-selection guidance. A decision should connect the technology to team size, data complexity, existing skills, maintenance horizon, and licensing requirements.
  5. It repeated performance claims without enough methodology. A statement such as “300x faster” is not portable across datasets, browsers, versions, and workloads.
  6. It used 2020 assumptions as if they were timeless. Svelte 3 is a historical label, and current pricing, support, releases, and ecosystem conditions must be checked separately.

What changed after the 2020 comparison?

The safest way to read the list today is as a dated snapshot, not as a current ranking. The original article was published in 2020 and later marked updated, but the six names should not be treated as an up-to-date assessment of current versions, adoption, release activity, or support.

One concrete later change concerns Ext JS licensing. Sencha’s current pricing information in the supplied research lists paid annual plans, and Sencha announced a move to subscription-only licensing effective April 1, 2026. Sencha’s support information also states that bridge products including ExtReact and ExtAngular entered end-of-life status and were no longer commercially available or developed after 2022. Teams evaluating those products should consult the Sencha support and product lifecycle information rather than rely on the 2020 article.

A genuinely current comparison would need independently verified release versions, maintenance status, ecosystem data, security practices, accessibility support, hiring conditions, and current prices for every option. Those facts should not be inferred from a historical list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these six JavaScript UI frameworks still the top choices today?

No. The six technologies are the historical selection in SitePoint’s 2020 article, not an objective 2026 ranking. Current recommendations require fresh research into versions, maintenance, ecosystem health, security, accessibility, hiring, and licensing.

Is React a framework or a library?

React is more precisely described as a UI library for building declarative, reusable components. A React application normally adds separate or ecosystem-level choices for routing, data fetching, forms, state management, testing, styling, and sometimes server rendering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which option was best for data-heavy enterprise applications?

Ext JS was the most directly targeted at data-heavy enterprise applications because it included a large integrated catalog of grids, trees, forms, charts, and layouts. The commercial license, vendor commitment, accessibility requirements, and current eligibility terms must be evaluated before adoption.

Was Svelte 3 always faster than React or Vue?

No. Svelte 3’s compile-time model and direct DOM updates could reduce some runtime work, but performance depended on the application, compiler output, JavaScript payload, browser, network, device, and workload. Teams should benchmark representative user journeys instead of assuming a universal winner.

Does free or open source mean a JavaScript UI stack has no cost?

No. Open-source core technologies can still require paid component libraries, hosting, monitoring, support, training, consulting, or substantial internal maintenance. Ext JS adds explicit commercial licensing, while open-source stacks shift more component assembly and governance work to the team.

The Bottom Line

The six choices were valuable in 2020 because they represented different answers to the same UI problem: React maximized ecosystem flexibility, Angular supplied structure, Vue enabled gradual adoption, Ember emphasized conventions, Svelte 3 moved work into compilation, and Ext JS bundled enterprise components into a commercial product. Choose by workload, team, maintenance horizon, measured performance, and licensing—not by the word “top.”
