iOS 26: How to use polls in Messages on iPhone, iPad, Mac is straightforward: open an iMessage conversation, choose Add on iPhone or iPad—or Apps on Mac—select Polls, add up to 12 choices, and send. Participants need iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, or visionOS 26 or later.

Apple’s native poll feature is an interactive element inside an iMessage conversation, including group chats. Participants can vote for none, one, or all available choices, remove their votes, add choices, and inspect who has or has not voted without installing a separate polling app.

Polls are not a general SMS or RCS feature. The conversation must use iMessage, and participants on incompatible software may see only a notice that a poll was sent—or, on some older devices, may not see a compatibility message at all.

Key takeaways

  • Messages polls require an iMessage conversation and a supported Apple operating system: iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, or visionOS 26 and later.
  • Each poll supports up to 12 options, and participants can vote for none, one, or all of the options.
  • On iPhone and iPad, create a poll with Add → Polls; on Mac, use Apps → Polls.
  • Any participant can add a choice, but a newly added choice starts without votes.
  • As of August 18, 2026, Apple lists iOS 26.6, iPadOS 26.6, and macOS Tahoe 26.6 as the latest versions; the poll feature is available on version 26 and later, not only on 26.6.

What are polls in Messages?

Messages polls are interactive iMessage elements embedded directly in a conversation. A group can use a poll to choose a restaurant, movie, destination, meeting time, or family activity while keeping the question and votes in the same chat.

#1 Best Overall

Apple introduced the feature with iOS 26 and the related operating-system releases. Apple’s iOS 26 announcement identifies polls as part of the Messages experience, while Apple’s platform-specific guides provide the current creation and voting instructions.

Messages polls are collaborative rather than strictly creator-controlled. Every participant can add another option, and every participant can vote for any number of the available options. Messages does not document anonymous voting, deadlines, automatic closing, ranking, reminders, or a built-in single-winner mode.

What do you need to use a Messages poll?

You need an iMessage conversation and a compatible Apple device running version 26 or later. Apple lists the following supported platforms for starting, viewing, and voting in a poll:

Device or platform Minimum software Poll access
iPhone iOS 26 Create, view, vote, add choices, and view details
iPad iPadOS 26 Create, view, vote, add choices, and view details
Mac macOS Tahoe 26 Create, view, vote, add choices, and view details
Apple Watch watchOS 26 Supported iMessage poll participation
Apple Vision Pro visionOS 26 Supported iMessage poll participation

As of August 18, 2026, Apple lists iOS 26.6, iPadOS 26.6, and macOS Tahoe 26.6 as the latest versions, released July 27, 2026. Version 26.6 is the current point release on that date, but version 26 or a later compatible release is the requirement for polls.

A participant using an older or otherwise incompatible system does not receive the same interactive poll. Apple’s documentation says that an incompatible participant receives a message indicating that a poll was sent. Apple’s iOS and iPadOS 26 release notes also warn that some older devices may not display compatibility messages, so an older-device user might not realize that the conversation contains a poll.

How do you create a poll on iPhone?

On an iPhone running iOS 26 or later, create a poll from the Add menu in an iMessage conversation.

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Open an existing iMessage conversation or start a new one.
  3. Tap the Add button beside the text field.
  4. Tap Polls.
  5. Tap each option row and enter a choice.
  6. Add up to 12 options.
  7. Tap the Send button.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide instructions for Messages polls also mention that Apple Intelligence can suggest a poll when the conversation appears to call for one. Apple Intelligence is optional: manual creation through Add → Polls does not require an Apple Intelligence suggestion.

How do you create a poll on iPad?

On an iPad running iPadOS 26 or later, the poll path is also Add → Polls inside an iMessage conversation.

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Open an existing iMessage conversation.
  3. Tap Add beside the message field.
  4. Tap Polls.
  5. Tap each row and enter the choices.
  6. Enter up to 12 options.
  7. Tap Send.

The iPad workflow is similar to the iPhone workflow, but the device must be using iPadOS 26 or later. The Apple iPad User Guide documents the same 12-option limit and the same participant voting controls.

How do you create a poll on Mac?

On a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, create a poll from the Apps button, not an iPhone-style Add button.

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Open an existing conversation or create a new message.
  3. Click the Apps button to the left of the message field.
  4. Click Polls.
  5. Click each option row and enter a choice.
  6. Add up to 12 options.
  7. Press Return to send the poll.

The Apple Messages User Guide for Mac uses the Apps button and the Return key in its Mac instructions. Looking for an Add button on Mac can therefore lead to the wrong control.

How do you vote in a Messages poll?

Open the conversation containing the poll, then tap or click an option to vote for it. Tap or click the same option again to remove that vote.

Messages polls allow participants to vote for none, one, or all of the available options. A poll therefore does not automatically enforce one choice per person. If a group needs a single answer, write that instruction in the surrounding message—for example, “Choose one restaurant”—but understand that Messages itself does not enforce single-choice voting.

Action iPhone and iPad Mac
Choose an option Tap the option Click the option
Remove your vote Tap the selected option again Click the selected option again
Number of choices allowed None, one, or all None, one, or all

Apple’s iPhone poll guidance confirms that selecting an option again removes the vote and that participants can vote for none or all options.

How do you add another choice to a poll?

Any participant in the conversation can add a choice. A new choice is added without votes, including for the person who added it; the person who adds the choice must select it separately if they want to vote for it.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the poll.
  2. Tap Add Choice.
  3. Enter the new option.
  4. Tap Send.
  5. Select the new option separately if you want to vote for it.

On Mac

  1. Open the poll.
  2. Click Add Choice.
  3. Enter the new option.
  4. Press Return.
  5. Click the new option separately if you want to vote for it.

Because every participant can add an option, state any boundaries in the message that accompanies the poll. For example, you can explain that the listed restaurants are the approved choices and that additional suggestions should be discussed before being added. Messages does not document a creator-only setting for preventing additions.

How do you see who voted in a Messages poll?

Poll Details shows how people voted and which participants have not voted yet.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Touch and hold the poll.
  2. Tap Poll Details.

On Mac

  1. Control-click the poll.
  2. Click Poll Details.

The platform-specific controls differ: iPhone and iPad use a touch-and-hold gesture, while Mac uses Control-click. Apple documents these result-viewing steps in its iPad User Guide and Mac Messages guide.

Why is the Polls option missing?

The most likely explanations are that the conversation is not using iMessage, the device is running an operating system older than version 26, or the control is being sought in the wrong place. The following checks follow Apple’s documented requirements, but a device- or conversation-specific diagnosis cannot be guaranteed from those requirements alone.

Problem Likely explanation What to try
Polls is missing on iPhone or iPad The conversation may not be an iMessage conversation. Check that the chat is using iMessage, then open Add and look for Polls.
Polls is missing on iPhone The iPhone may be running an operating system older than iOS 26. Update the iPhone to iOS 26 or later, then check Add → Polls again.
Polls is missing on iPad The iPad may be running an operating system older than iPadOS 26. Update the iPad to iPadOS 26 or later, then check Add → Polls again.
Polls is missing on Mac The Mac may not be running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, or the wrong menu is being used. Update macOS if the Mac is eligible, then click Apps beside the message field and choose Polls.
The recipient sees only a notice The recipient may be using an unsupported operating system or may not be participating through a compatible iMessage session. Ask the recipient to update a supported Apple device, or use another polling method for the group.
An older device shows nothing useful Apple says some older devices may not show compatibility messages. Contact the participant through another channel and use a compatible polling method if the participant cannot update.
A newly added choice has no votes New choices intentionally begin without votes. Select the new choice manually if you want to vote for it.
The poll accepts several selections Messages permits voting for none or all options. State “choose one” or “choose all that apply” in the surrounding message.

Apple’s iPhone documentation and Mac documentation establish the iMessage and operating-system requirements. Apple does not publish a comprehensive list covering every reason the Polls menu could be absent, so additional device-specific causes should be treated as possibilities rather than confirmed diagnoses.

Are Apple Intelligence poll suggestions required?

No. Apple Intelligence poll suggestions are optional; users can create a poll manually through the Polls menu even when Apple Intelligence is unavailable.

Apple Intelligence may identify a conversation where a poll would be useful and suggest one. Availability of Apple Intelligence and related suggestions depends on Apple’s language, region, device, and feature availability conditions. Apple’s support documentation also describes availability for the listed feature as beta-dependent in the relevant context, so a missing suggestion does not mean that manual polls are unavailable.

What should you know before sending a group poll?

  • Confirm that the group conversation is an iMessage conversation before building the poll.
  • Keep the question explicit about whether participants should choose one option or multiple options, because Messages allows none or all selections.
  • Remember that the maximum is 12 options, not 12 participants or 12 votes.
  • Expect any participant to add another choice, and remember that added choices begin with zero votes.
  • Check Poll Details when you need to see how people voted or identify participants who have not voted.
  • Warn mixed-version groups that incompatible participants may receive only a notice—or may not see compatibility messaging on some older devices.

Messages polls work best for a compatible iMessage group making a lightweight decision. A mixed-version or non-iMessage group may need a different polling method, because the native interactive poll experience is not guaranteed for every participant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Messages polls work in SMS or RCS conversations?

Apple documents Messages polls as an iMessage feature, so the conversation must use iMessage. The supplied Apple documentation does not establish that the interactive poll feature works in SMS or RCS chats.

How many choices can an iMessage poll have?

An iMessage poll can contain up to 12 options. The 12-option limit applies to choices, not participants or votes.

Can people vote for more than one option in an Apple Messages poll?

Yes. Participants can vote for none, one, or all available options, and tapping a selected option again removes that vote. Messages does not document an enforced single-choice mode.

Can everyone in a group add an option to a Messages poll?

Yes. Any participant can add a choice. The new choice starts without votes, so the person who adds it must select it separately if they want to vote for it.

What does an unsupported participant see when someone sends a poll?

An incompatible participant may receive a message saying that a poll was sent instead of seeing an interactive poll. Apple also warns that some older devices may not display compatibility messages.

The Bottom Line

Apple Messages polls are a convenient native option for compatible iMessage groups on iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, or visionOS 26 and later. Use Add → Polls on iPhone or iPad and Apps → Polls on Mac, then remember that participants can select multiple answers and add unvoted choices.
