Zoho Books is the best overall GST software for most small and growing businesses in 2026 because it combines cloud accounting, GST reports, invoicing, inventory, bank reconciliation, collaboration and integrations. However, it is not the best choice for everyone. Choose TallyPrime for established, accountant-led or offline-heavy operations; BUSY for inventory-intensive MSMEs; myBillBook for low-cost billing and mobile stock management; and ClearGST when return preparation and purchase reconciliation are the main problems.
The important distinction is that GST billing, GST accounting and GST return software are related but different categories. A billing app can create tax invoices and export return data without being a complete accounting ledger. A return platform can reconcile purchase data and prepare returns without replacing the business’s inventory or bookkeeping system.
Best GST software in 2026 at a glance
| Software | Best for | Primary role | Pricing or trial position | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zoho Books | Best overall cloud accounting | Accounting, GST, invoicing and inventory | Free India plan; paid plans from ₹899 per organisation per month, or ₹749 per month annually, before local taxes | Plan limits and a learning curve for advanced workflows |
| TallyPrime | Established and offline-oriented businesses | Full accounting and business management | Edition, rental, licence and renewal pricing must be checked on Tally’s official India price list | More setup and training than a simple cloud billing app |
| BUSY | Inventory-heavy MSMEs | GST accounting, billing and inventory | 15-day advertised trial; pricing varies by edition and GST is added to listed prices | Edition differences and mixed support/reporting feedback |
| myBillBook | Low-cost billing and mobile inventory | Billing, stock, payment follow-up and basic GST reporting | Annual-plan prices shown from ₹217 per month; a ₹399-per-year Silver Android plan is also listed | Not as suitable for complex ledgers, controls or audit workflows |
| ClearGST/ClearTax | Returns and reconciliation | GST return preparation, filing workflow and reconciliation | Business pricing is generally sales-led rather than a simple public monthly price | Usually complements, rather than replaces, accounting and inventory software |
Prices above are a comparison snapshot, not a guarantee. Confirm the current plan, billing period, number of users, GST treatment, add-ons and renewal terms before subscribing.
First decide which kind of GST software you need
GST billing software
Billing-first software is designed around sales invoices, estimates, payment reminders, stock movement and basic tax reporting. It is often the right level for a small retailer, field salesperson or service provider that does not need detailed financial accounting.

Typical requirements include GSTIN and customer records, HSN or SAC details, intra-state and inter-state invoices, credit notes, payment status, e-way bills, inventory and exportable GSTR data. A billing app may not provide a full chart of accounts, sophisticated bank reconciliation, period locking, audit controls or manufacturing accounting.
GST accounting software
Accounting software uses the invoice as one part of a broader financial system. It normally adds ledgers, accounts receivable and payable, purchase accounting, expenses, journals, bank reconciliation, financial statements, inventory valuation, user permissions and accountant access.
This is the category to consider when the business needs reliable books throughout the year, not merely a way to create GST invoices. Zoho Books, TallyPrime and BUSY fit here, although their deployment models and strengths differ substantially.
GST return and reconciliation software
Return-focused software concentrates on preparing returns, importing or matching purchase information, finding exceptions and managing filing workflows across one or more GSTINs. It can be valuable to a tax team even when the business already uses a separate accounting or ERP system.
ClearGST is the clearest fit in this comparison. It should not automatically be treated as a replacement for a billing, inventory or general-ledger system.
1. Zoho Books — best overall cloud GST accounting software
Choose Zoho Books if: you want browser and mobile access, collaborative bookkeeping, GST reporting, invoicing, inventory and integrations in one cloud platform.
Zoho Books has the broadest fit for service businesses, agencies, startups, online businesses and growing SMEs that want to move away from spreadsheets or a single-computer accounting setup. Its India free plan includes invoices, bills, expenses, journals, bank reconciliation, inventory, GST reports and filing, with support for one user plus one accountant. [c001]

Strengths
- Cloud access for owners, accountants and staff.
- GST invoicing, reports and filing workflow in the same system as accounting.
- Bank reconciliation, customer portals, approvals and automation.
- Inventory capability that can scale beyond simple invoice-only use.
- Integration with the wider Zoho ecosystem.
- A free plan that makes it a practical first system for a solopreneur or micro-business.
Limitations
Zoho Books is broader than a basic billing app, so setup can take longer. A business with unusual or complex GST scenarios should validate the exact workflow rather than assuming that a general GST feature list covers every case. Independent review evidence is positive but not unanimous: G2 verified-review commentary praises Indian compliance workflows and automation while noting a learning curve and limitations in some complex GST situations. Capterra listed a 4.2 rating in an update dated July 10, 2026. These are user-review signals, not controlled product tests. [c015][c016]
Demo or trial test: create an invoice, record a purchase, reconcile a bank transaction, inspect the GST reports and invite the accountant. Then check the limits that apply to your number of users, locations and inventory operations.

- Compatibility Information: Please ensure that our receipt printer is compatible with your device. The Ethernet interface supports Windows, Mac OS, Linux, VirtualCom, Android, RaspberryPi and iOS. But the USB interface could only support Windows, Mac OS, Linux, VirtualCom and Android. Additionally, it does not support Ubereats, Grubhub, Doordash, Postmates, Clover, or Shopify for POS software.
- Fast Printing & Auto Cutter: This high-efficiency thermal receipt printer boasts a maximum printing speed of 260mm/s, ensuring quick and efficient printing without any paper jams. The automatic cutter is designed to handle heavy usage and can last up to 1.5 million cuts. With a one-button open cover and a spacious paper warehouse, this POS printer is easy to use and maintain. Additionally, the receipt printers utilizes direct thermal printing technology, eliminating the need for ribbons or ink.
- USB & Ethernet Interface: The receipt printer has USB and Ethernet interfaces, as well as cash drawer RJ11 ports. However, it does not support Bluetooth or WiFi printing. With a 203 dpi resolution, the Ethernet receipt printer produces high-quality prints that are sharp and clear. To develop custom applications on Ethernet-supported systems like iOS and Android, a software development kit (SDK) is necessary.
- Wall Mount Option: The kitchen printer has a wall mount option with two hanging holes at the bottom, allowing it to easily fit into any space. This USB receipt printer is an excellent choice for various establishments such as restaurants, kitchens, retail stores, grocery stores, clothing stores, supermarkets, cafes, ticket points, food trucks, banks, shopping malls, hotels, canteens, and more.
- Customer Service in the United States: Our team of customer support based in the United States is ready to help you with any problems you may have regarding the integration of the direct thermal printer. Whether you require assistance with setup, connection, compatibility, or any other issues related to the product, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. Additionally, all Volcora products are backed by a limited lifetime warranty, ensuring your peace of mind when making a purchase.
Next step: See Zoho Books pricing before deciding whether the free plan is sufficient or a paid tier is required.
2. TallyPrime — best for established accounting and offline-heavy workflows
Choose TallyPrime if: your accountant already works in Tally, you need detailed ledgers and reports, or your business depends on desktop-oriented operations, complex inventory, taxation and audit processes.
TallyPrime remains a strong choice for established retailers, distributors, manufacturers, accountants and businesses with substantial offline or desktop requirements. Tally Solutions positions it as business-management software with GST filing and e-way-bill management. [c006]
Why TallyPrime remains competitive
- Deep accounting and ledger functionality.
- Strong familiarity among Indian accountants and finance teams.
- Detailed reporting for businesses that have outgrown basic billing.
- Support for complex inventory and taxation processes.
- A desktop-led model that can suit businesses where continuous browser access is not the primary requirement.
The trade-off is simplicity. TallyPrime generally demands more configuration, training and accounting knowledge than a mobile-first billing product. Licensing, edition, rental, renewal and support costs vary, so use Tally’s official India price-list page for the final figure rather than relying on third-party price pages. [c006][c017]
Reviews and watch-outs
G2’s 2026 listing records TallyPrime at 4.5 out of 5 from 293 reviews. Review summaries praise accounting, GST compliance and reporting, while recurring criticisms mention an older-feeling interface, limited automation in some workflows, setup requirements and occasional performance or add-on concerns. [c018]
That combination makes TallyPrime particularly compelling when the business already has Tally-trained staff. It is less compelling when the owner wants the quickest possible self-service setup with minimal accounting terminology.

Demo test: ask the salesperson or implementation partner to demonstrate your actual ledger structure, inventory locations, GST reports, e-way-bill process, user permissions, backup and data export. Confirm the exact licence or rental arrangement and what support or renewal includes.
Next step: Request a TallyPrime demo through the official product or sales route, and confirm the current price for your edition and number of users.
3. BUSY — best for GST-heavy MSMEs with deep inventory needs
Choose BUSY if: stock control, trading, distribution, retail or manufacturing workflows matter as much as GST invoicing and accounting.
BUSY is aimed at MSMEs and combines accounting, GST billing and inventory. Its official trial page advertises a 15-day trial with GST accounting, invoicing, e-way bills, inventory and GSTR filing. The listed feature set includes GSTIN-based party creation, barcode design and printing, stock tracking, GST setup, brand, colour and size inventory, serial-number and warranty tracking, batch and expiry management, and invoice creation. - Auto Cutter and High-Speed Printing: The thermal receipt printer features high efficiency with auto cutter and the fastest printing speed of 300mm/sec. Easy for paper installation, easy maintenance, and excellent structure. Plug and play USB PORT, easy to use. Three Interface ports: USB+ LAN + SERIAL PORT. Does NOT support Wifi or Bluetooth. Compatible with WIN2003/WINXP/WIN7/WIN8/WIN10/LINUX/Mac
- Wall Hanging Design: Kitchen printer with two hanging holes on the bottom support wall mount hanging. Easy to use, save the place. With auto cutter and compatible with several operating systems. Print width: 79.50.5mm; Paper Width: 3 1/8 inch (80mm)
- Wide Compatibility and Reasonable Design: Desktop or wall-mounted type for option, lets you use every space more rationally. The humanized auto-cutter ensures the receipt will not fall to the ground after printing. One-button open cover and large paper warehouse design, easy to use and maintain. Works with MUNBYN 3 1/8 x 203ft thermal paper and Gorilla 3 1/8 x 230 Thermal Paper Receipt Rolls
- Cost-Effective Operation: Supports cash drawer driving, compatible with ESC/POS print commands. The network receipt printer does not need ribbon or ink cartridge, resulting in low operating cost. The printer has the function of overheating protection for long service life. Printing characters with high speed and reliable performance for receipt printing in large shopping malls, supermarkets, retail, hotels, canteens, and restaurants
- Compatibility Notice: The receipt printer is not compatible with Grubhub, Doordash, Square, Chromebook, Uber, or Clover systems. Rongta is a brand dedicated to offering high quality products and good shopping experience for customers
Where BUSY fits best
- Wholesalers and distributors managing many stock items.
- Retailers needing barcode-related workflows.
- Manufacturers or businesses dealing with batches, expiry dates, serial numbers or warranties.
- MSMEs that want more inventory depth than a basic billing application provides.
BUSY plan pricing depends on edition and included features, and GST is added to the listed prices on the official pricing page. The correct comparison is therefore not simply “BUSY versus another app at one monthly price”; compare the edition, number of users, inventory functions, filing tools, support and deployment arrangement.
Reviews and watch-outs
Review evidence is mixed. Capterra’s 2026 listing includes verified-review infrastructure and user commentary, including dissatisfaction with support and reporting in at least one review. That does not establish that every customer will have the same experience, but it is a reason to make the demo highly specific. [c019]
Before buying, ask BUSY to show the reports your accountant actually uses, a GSTR-2B reconciliation scenario, inventory valuation, batch or serial tracking, and the process for e-invoices and e-way bills. Confirm which features belong to the edition being quoted.
Next step: Start the BUSY trial and use the 15-day period with representative inventory, purchase and GST data rather than only creating a sample sales invoice.

Choose myBillBook if: your priority is quick GST billing, mobile or web access, stock tracking, payment reminders and straightforward reports rather than a sophisticated accounting system.
myBillBook is a practical fit for micro-businesses, small retailers, distributors, field businesses and service providers. Its advertised capabilities include GST billing, inventory, mobile and web access, e-way bills, e-invoicing integration, GSTR reports in JSON format and free demos. [c002]
myBillBook pricing
The vendor’s pricing page lists the following annual-billing figures:
- Diamond: ₹217 per month when billed annually.
- Platinum: ₹250 per month when billed annually.
- Enterprise: ₹417 per month when billed annually.
- Silver Android: ₹399 per year for one device, one business and one user.
The listed prices exclude 18% GST. There is an important caveat: a separate service-business page displays different monthly and annual figures and describes features such as unlimited invoices, one business, one user, one CA, inventory, Android, iOS and web access, custom invoice themes, online-store functions, barcodes and client management. Treat the plan name, billing period, tax treatment and included limits as part of the price—not as footnotes. [c002][c003]
Strengths and limitations
myBillBook’s strengths are speed, accessibility and low entry cost. It can be a better operational fit than a full accounting suite when staff mainly need to issue invoices, check stock, follow up payments and work from a phone.
It is less suitable when the business needs complex ledgers, multi-entity accounting, advanced approvals, detailed audit controls, sophisticated reconciliation or manufacturing accounting. Confirm the depth of return preparation and whether the application files directly, connects through an authorised route or only exports data for another workflow.

5. ClearGST/ClearTax — best for GST return preparation and reconciliation
Choose ClearGST if: your main challenge is purchase reconciliation, return preparation, filing oversight or handling compliance across multiple GSTINs—not replacing your primary accounting and inventory system.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →ClearTax describes ClearGST as cloud-based GST software supporting reconciliation, return preparation and filing from GSTR-1 through GSTR-9C. It also identifies support for forms including GSTR-4 and GSTR-6. That makes it especially relevant to tax professionals, finance teams, larger businesses and organisations that already have an accounting or ERP platform but need a stronger compliance workflow. [c005]
Pricing and fit
ClearTax’s public pricing page is primarily oriented toward expert-assisted income-tax filing and directs business users toward sales or contact flows rather than showing a simple public ClearGST price card. Do not invent a monthly subscription price; treat business pricing as quote-based or sales-led unless you have a current official quote. [c004]
Ask for a demonstration using representative purchase data, reconciliation exceptions, return types and GSTINs. Confirm whether ClearGST imports from your accounting system, exports filing data, supports your required forms and complements or duplicates any tools your CA already uses.
Next step: Talk to ClearGST sales and request a workflow demonstration using your actual reconciliation and return requirements rather than accepting a generic product tour.

GST compliance requirements to verify in 2026
Software that creates a GST invoice is not automatically software that can complete your entire compliance workflow. GSTN’s taxpayer-assistance materials describe a GSP ecosystem in which third-party applications can connect taxpayers with GST systems for invoice uploads, inward-supply data, matching, return preparation and filing. GSTN materials have also identified free or basic accounting and billing products for eligible small taxpayers, including Zoho Books and other vendors. This is useful context, but it is not a blanket government endorsement of a product’s quality, uptime, support or filing accuracy. [c009][c010]
E-invoicing applicability and reporting deadlines
The official IRP timeline records e-invoicing applicability for taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover of ₹5 crore or more from August 1, 2023, subject to the applicable rules, taxpayer or entity type, transaction type and exemptions. [c011]
From April 1, 2025, taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover of ₹10 crore or more must report e-invoices within 30 days of the invoice date, according to the IRP advisory. A suitable system must therefore be tested for more than a marketing claim that it “supports e-invoicing.” Check the complete workflow: invoice data validation, IRN generation, QR-code output, cancellation or correction handling, e-way-bill interaction and reporting deadlines. [c012][c013]
An August 2026 GSTN advisory indicates changes to e-invoice and e-way-bill APIs scheduled for production from August 1, 2026. If you are buying or renewing software around that date, ask the vendor how it will maintain compatibility with the current GSTN and IRP environment. Do not assume that a previously working integration will remain sufficient without an update. [c014]

GST software buying checklist
- Define the real job. Decide whether you need only GST invoices, a complete accounting ledger, inventory management, return preparation, reconciliation or a combination.
- List every compliance workflow. Confirm the relevant return types, number of GSTINs, GSTR-2B reconciliation, e-invoicing, e-way bills, credit notes and filing responsibilities.
- Ask how the GST connection works. Determine whether the product connects directly through an authorised route, uses a GSP or IRP integration, or merely exports data for filing elsewhere.
- Match the deployment model. Confirm whether you need browser, mobile, desktop, offline, cloud, multi-location or remote accountant access.
- Test inventory depth. Ask specifically about batches, expiry dates, serial numbers, warranties, barcodes, godowns, manufacturing and valuation—not just whether the product has an “inventory” feature.
- Calculate total cost. Include GST, users, locations, add-ons, support, migration, implementation, training, data storage and renewal costs.
- Protect your exit path. Ask what data can be exported, in which formats, how backups work and whether you can retrieve invoices, ledgers, stock and tax data if you change products.
- Verify controls. Check CA or accountant access, approvals, role permissions, audit trail, period locking and the ability to restrict edits after filing.
- Use real sample data. Test sales invoices, purchases, tax rates, credit notes, stock movements, payment records and reconciliation exceptions from your own business.
- Recheck compatibility before paying. Confirm current GSTN and IRP support immediately before purchase, particularly around the 2026 API and reporting changes.
A practical demo script
A polished demo can hide the exact problem you need to solve. Give each vendor a short, repeatable test:
- Create an intra-state and inter-state invoice with your actual HSN or SAC codes and tax rates.
- Issue a credit note and confirm how it affects the ledger, inventory and return data.
- Record a purchase and import or enter the relevant purchase information for reconciliation.
- Show a matched item and an exception in the purchase-reconciliation workflow.
- Generate the GST report or return data you actually submit, and ask whether filing is direct or requires another portal step.
- Demonstrate e-invoice and e-way-bill handling if your business is covered, including IRN, QR code and reporting deadlines.
- Move stock between locations and test the required batch, expiry, serial-number, warranty, barcode or manufacturing process.
- Invite the accountant, create a restricted staff role and inspect the audit trail and period-locking controls.
- Export a backup and representative reports. Ask what happens if the subscription ends.
Score each vendor on task completion, number of manual steps, error messages, report clarity, support responsiveness and total quoted cost. A product that looks inexpensive but requires manual reconciliation or separate filing work may cost more operationally than a higher-priced integrated system.
How to interpret software reviews
Review scores are useful for identifying recurring themes, not for proving that one product is objectively best. TallyPrime’s G2 score and Zoho Books’ Capterra and G2 evidence provide directional user feedback. BUSY’s mixed Capterra commentary shows why a targeted demo matters. App-store review volume for a mobile billing product can indicate broad usage, but it is not equivalent to controlled testing of accounting accuracy, GST workflows or support quality.
Look for repeated comments about the specific work your business performs: reconciliation, inventory, reports, data migration, support, integrations and ease of use. Do not treat a review-site score as proof of government approval, filing accuracy, uptime or suitability for your transaction profile.
Our verdict
For most cloud-first small businesses, Zoho Books is the strongest starting point because its free plan lowers the entry barrier and its paid tiers cover accounting, GST, inventory and collaboration. TallyPrime is the safer operational choice when accountant familiarity, detailed accounting and desktop-oriented workflows outweigh interface simplicity. BUSY deserves a close look from inventory-led MSMEs, especially those needing batch, barcode, serial or expiry workflows. myBillBook is the value pick for straightforward billing and mobile stock management. ClearGST is the specialist option for return preparation and reconciliation and may work best alongside, rather than instead of, accounting software.
No shortlist can replace a demo with your data. The final decision should be based on the full workflow—from invoice creation and inventory through reconciliation, reporting, filing, backup and accountant review—not on the cheapest monthly price or the highest review score.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best GST software for a small business in India?
For a small business that wants complete cloud accounting, start with Zoho Books. Its India free plan includes core invoicing, accounting, inventory and GST capabilities for one user plus one accountant. If the business mainly needs quick invoices, stock and payment follow-up, myBillBook may be a simpler and lower-cost fit.
Is GST billing software the same as GST accounting software?
No. GST billing software focuses on tax invoices, stock and payment operations. GST accounting software adds ledgers, expenses, journals, bank reconciliation, financial reports, controls and broader bookkeeping. A business should not assume that an invoice app is a complete accounting system.
Can GST software file returns automatically?
Capabilities vary. Some products prepare reports or return data, while others connect through the GST ecosystem or provide a filing workflow. Confirm the exact return types, GSTIN limits, GSTR-2B reconciliation, filing steps and whether the product connects to an authorised GST or IRP route rather than relying on a general “GST filing” label.
Which is better for inventory: TallyPrime or BUSY?
Both deserve a hands-on comparison for your inventory model. TallyPrime is particularly strong where detailed accounting, established accountant familiarity and audit-oriented workflows matter. BUSY is a strong contender for MSMEs needing GST billing plus batch, expiry, barcode, serial-number, warranty or production-related features. The correct choice depends on your edition and actual demo results.
Should I choose ClearGST instead of accounting software?
Usually not if you need a primary ledger, invoicing or inventory system. ClearGST is most relevant when return preparation and purchase reconciliation are the central problems. It may complement an existing accounting or ERP platform; ask the vendor to demonstrate the integration and data handoff using your workflow.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with Zoho Books for broad cloud accounting, TallyPrime for established desktop-led accounting, BUSY for inventory-heavy MSMEs, myBillBook for inexpensive billing and ClearGST for return and reconciliation work. Before subscribing, test real invoices, purchases, stock, reconciliation exceptions and filing steps, then verify the current GSTN/IRP compatibility and total cost.
