Hungryroot is the best pick when the hard part of groceries is deciding what to cook and buy: it pairs a weekly grocery delivery with chef-crafted recipes matched to your tastes and dietary goals. Instacart is the best overall grocery delivery service for most U.S. shoppers because it lets you compare multiple local and national retailers in one marketplace. But it is not automatically the cheapest. Walmart+ is usually the better value for regular Walmart shoppers, Target Circle 360 is strong for Target and Shipt-supported stores, Kroger Boost rewards Kroger-family loyalty, and Amazon grocery delivery makes the most sense for existing Prime members in supported markets.
This comparison is based on published prices, membership terms, stated coverage, payment options, fulfillment features, and retailer networks—not hands-on testing. Grocery prices, fees, delivery windows, inventory, and participating stores can change by address and checkout session. Treat the prices below as a starting point and confirm the complete total before subscribing.

| FreshDirect | Northeast households wanting scheduled delivery | Core-area orders generally have a $35 minimum and $7.99–$9.99 delivery fees; DeliveryPass can provide unlimited free delivery under its terms | It is a regional service, not a nationwide option |

How to compare grocery delivery costs correctly
The membership price is only one part of the delivered cost. Compare the amount you would actually pay at checkout:
Total delivered cost = item prices + delivery fee + service or marketplace fee + small-order fee + priority or long-distance fee + taxes and local charges + optional tip + allocated membership cost.
Retailer-backed services can be less expensive when you repeatedly shop one store, especially if they offer free pickup or loyalty rewards. Marketplaces can be more useful when you need items from several stores or want to compare nearby retailers. Neither model is always cheaper because item prices may differ from the shelf price and fees can change based on order size, distance, time, and store.
When does a membership pay off?
Divide the membership cost by the number of qualifying orders you expect to place. For example, spread over 52 weekly orders, the annual fees work out to approximately:
- Walmart+: $1.88 per weekly order for the $98 annual plan.
- Target Circle 360: $1.90 per weekly order for the $99 annual plan.
- Amazon’s grocery subscription: $1.92 per weekly order for the $99.99 annual plan, before any other Prime costs.
- DashPass or Uber One: approximately $1.85 per weekly order for the $96 annual plan.
- Kroger Boost: approximately $1.33 or $1.90 per weekly order, depending on the $69 or $99 plan.
Those figures are not guaranteed savings. They exclude service fees, item-price differences, tips, minimum-order rules, and orders that do not qualify. A membership can still be worthwhile for shipping, fuel, pharmacy, streaming, or other included benefits, but do not subscribe solely because the annual price looks low.
1. Hungryroot: best for personalized groceries with recipes
Hungryroot is the strongest choice when the hard part of groceries is deciding what to cook and buy, not getting items to the door. It is a grocery delivery service that starts with a short quiz on taste, dietary needs, and who is eating, then builds a weekly cart from more than 50,000 chef-crafted recipes and 1,000 plus junk-free grocery items matched to those answers. SmartCart, Hungryroot’s personalized recommendation system, updates every week based on what customers rate and reorder, so deliveries get closer to a household’s real preferences over time.
Dietary goals including High Protein, Anti-Inflammatory, Gut-Friendly, Less Sugar, Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, and Vegetarian are supported directly in the match, rather than left to the shopper to filter for at a marketplace. Any recommended item can be swapped, removed, or added, deliveries can be resized, and shoppers can set a budget Hungryroot holds to. Skipping a week, pausing, or canceling takes one click. Hungryroot shows the current plans and delivery coverage for your address.
Best fit: households that want groceries and a week of recipes handled together, people cooking for specific dietary goals, and shoppers who would rather not stitch a meal planner, a recipe app, and a delivery service into one workflow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Check before ordering: confirm delivery coverage at your ZIP code, take the quiz to see the recommended assortment and estimated weekly cost, and set a budget before the first delivery so the cart sizes to it.
2. Instacart: best overall selection and flexibility
Instacart is the strongest default choice for households that shop at more than one retailer. It combines local and national grocers in one app, supports same-day delivery and pickup, and lets shoppers compare available stores without maintaining several retailer accounts.
Instacart describes its marketplace using more than one coverage metric. Its company information says the marketplace spans more than 2,200 retail banners and nearly 100,000 locations. Its consumer-facing page separately describes more than 500 retailers, 80,000 stores, and 14,000 cities. These figures measure different parts of the network, so they should not be treated as interchangeable counts. Your address and the stores shown in the app are the decisive test.
Useful controls include:
- Same-day delivery and curbside pickup at select retailers.
- Live communication with the shopper.
- Advance replacement preferences, including the ability to reject substitutions.
- Leave-at-door delivery where available.
- Shopping from several participating retailers through one marketplace.
Instacart+ is optional. Its current terms describe $0 delivery fees on eligible grocery and retail orders above the applicable threshold, but service fees, taxes, tips, and some exclusions still apply. Instacart+ also does not guarantee faster delivery or a preferred time slot. A membership may reduce delivery charges without making the entire order free.
Retailers set item prices on the marketplace, and some may list prices that differ from their in-store prices. That makes Instacart excellent for selection and convenience, but not a sound universal cheapest-service recommendation.
Best fit: multi-store households, people without a preferred supermarket, and shoppers who value replacement controls and one consolidated shopping interface.
Check before ordering: compare the same basket at the retailer’s own website if available, inspect the service fee, and verify whether pickup costs less than delivery.

3. Walmart Grocery/Walmart+: best value for Walmart households
Walmart+ is the most compelling option when Walmart is your normal grocery store, your local store has reliable inventory, and your order usually exceeds $35. The membership costs $98 annually or $12.95 monthly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Walmart states that members do not pay the standard $7.95–$9.95 store-delivery fee on qualifying orders. The free store-delivery benefit requires a $35 minimum; orders below that threshold may receive a $6.99 minimum-order fee. That distinction matters for small, frequent orders.
Walmart also offers free curbside pickup for qualifying orders. Same-day and express delivery are available in selected markets. Walmart’s rapid service, described as delivery in 30 minutes or less, was available in 33 U.S. markets as of May 28, 2026, and carries a $10 fee for Walmart+ members. It is therefore a paid speed upgrade, not a free Walmart+ benefit.
Other Walmart+ benefits can include free shipping, fuel savings, pharmacy delivery, mobile Scan & Go, and a choice of streaming benefit. Qualifying recipients of government assistance can use Walmart+ Assist for $49 annually or $6.47 monthly.
Best fit: Walmart regulars, larger households that can meet the order minimum, shoppers who use curbside pickup or Walmart shipping, and eligible government-assistance recipients.

4. Target Circle 360/Shipt: best for Target plus multi-retailer delivery
Target Circle 360 costs $99 annually or $10.99 monthly. Members receive unlimited same-day delivery on qualifying orders of at least $35, free two-day shipping on many items, and access to the Shipt Marketplace.
The Shipt Marketplace extends the service beyond Target. Target says members can shop from local grocers, pet stores, and specialty retailers without delivery fees or markups on qualifying orders. Select alcohol retailers and items are excluded, and the participating selection depends on the market. Shipt advertises a network of more than 120 stores, while Target describes Shipt Marketplace availability in more than 5,000 U.S. cities. Those are different measures of retailer breadth and geographic reach, not directly comparable store counts.
Nonmembers can generally pay $9.99 per eligible Target same-day delivery order over $35. That can be preferable for occasional users who would not recover the annual membership cost.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTarget has a notable EBT exception: Circle 360 members using EBT do not have to meet the $35 minimum, but they pay a $7 delivery fee with another payment method. This is different from saying that EBT delivery is free.
Best fit: Target shoppers who also order from supported grocers, pharmacies, pet stores, or specialty retailers and want same-day delivery without markups on qualifying orders.
Check before ordering: confirm that the retailer is in the Shipt Marketplace, inspect alcohol and item exclusions, and see whether your cart meets the $35 threshold.
5. Kroger Boost: best for Kroger-family loyalty and fuel rewards
Kroger Boost is a retailer-specific membership for shoppers who regularly use Kroger or a participating Kroger-family banner such as Fred Meyer, Ralphs, Fry’s, or King Soopers. Current terms list $69 and $99 annual plans, or $8.99 and $12.99 monthly plans. Benefits vary by tier.
The higher tier includes free delivery on orders over $35 in as little as two hours. The Essential tier covers next-day delivery. Both tiers include 2X points on qualifying grocery and general-merchandise purchases, which can improve the value for households that use Kroger fuel rewards consistently.
Kroger orders may be fulfilled through Kroger Delivery, Instacart, or Shipt depending on the market and store. Boost is therefore best understood as a Kroger membership with market-dependent fulfillment, not as one uniform delivery network with identical service everywhere.

6. Amazon grocery delivery: best for existing Prime members
Amazon’s grocery options include Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, local grocery and specialty retailers, and same-day fresh grocery delivery. The service is most attractive when you already pay for Prime and Amazon offers the grocery products you need in your area.
Amazon’s optional grocery delivery subscription costs $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year for Prime members. It provides unlimited grocery delivery on orders over $25 from participating stores in more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns. The subscription is separate from the general Prime membership, so prospective users should calculate the combined cost if they are not already Prime members.
Amazon also describes same-day fresh grocery delivery in more than 2,300 cities and towns. In most areas, Prime members receive free delivery on orders over $25 and pay $2.99 for smaller orders. Amazon Now is a separate option offering delivery in as little as 30 minutes in dozens of U.S. cities, with a discounted $3.99 delivery fee for Prime members.
Whole Foods has separate service-fee rules. Its official FAQ lists a $9.95 service fee for Prime delivery orders and $13.95 for non-Prime delivery orders, while pickup is free on orders of any size. The grocery subscription may change the economics for eligible members and locations, but it does not make every Amazon grocery order subject to one universal fee.
Best fit: existing Prime members, Amazon-heavy households, and shoppers in markets with Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods, local-store, or Amazon Now coverage.
Check before ordering: identify which Amazon grocery service is handling the cart, look for the specific delivery fee, and do not assume Whole Foods, Fresh, and Amazon Now share the same minimums or benefits.
7. DoorDash grocery: best for fast fill-in orders and bundled errands
DoorDash is usually more useful for a forgotten ingredient, a small emergency shop, or a combined grocery, restaurant, convenience, and retail order than for the lowest-cost weekly stock-up. Participating local grocery stores can offer produce, dairy, eggs, meat, fish, and other staples for delivery or pickup.
DashPass costs $9.99 monthly or $96 annually. It provides $0 delivery fees and reduced service fees on eligible merchants after the listed subtotal minimum is met. The membership does not remove every charge, and DoorDash’s fee structure is dynamic.

Best fit: occasional grocery needs, urgent fill-in orders, and people who already use DashPass for restaurant delivery.
Check before ordering: compare the merchant subtotal minimum, delivery fee, service fee, small-order fee, priority fee, and any local regulatory charge.
8. Uber Eats grocery: best for Uber One users and participating SNAP retailers
Uber Eats is a situational grocery option that can work well for quick fill-in orders, existing Uber One subscribers, and shoppers whose local store participates in Uber’s SNAP program.
Uber One costs $9.99 per month or $96 per year in the U.S. At participating grocery stores, members generally need a $35 minimum order to receive a $0 delivery fee and up to 5% off. Taxes and similar fees do not count toward the minimum. Retail service fees may be percentage-based, and small-order fees can apply.

Plus it is collapsible - it folds flat for easy storage and makes it great for storing an extra 1 or 2 in your car for any last minute needs.
Uber Eats supports SNAP at participating grocery stores. Its grocery features include replacement preferences, live order editing, shopper chat, and a freshness-guarantee process for qualifying fresh items. ALDI has also launched nationwide SNAP-EBT access on Uber Eats, although the usable stores and eligible items still depend on the shopper’s location and cart.
Best fit: Uber One users, ALDI shoppers where supported, and people who need a fast supplemental order.
Check before ordering: look for the store’s Uber One eligibility label, verify that the order exceeds the required subtotal, and separate SNAP-eligible food from fees and other charges.
9. FreshDirect: best regional option in the Northeast
FreshDirect is a regional grocery service serving many counties in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. It is a strong option for shoppers in its coverage area who prefer scheduled delivery, curated groceries, prepared foods, and temperature-controlled fulfillment.
Standard residential orders in the core service area generally have a $35 minimum, with delivery fees commonly ranging from $7.99 to $9.99. Seasonal destinations can have higher minimums and fees. Coverage, delivery charges, and available time slots depend on the county and delivery zone.
FreshDirect’s DeliveryPass provides unlimited free delivery and timeslot-reservation benefits under its plan terms, although seasonal surcharges can apply. FreshDirect also accepts SNAP/EBT for eligible products, but SNAP funds cannot pay delivery or other fees.
Best fit: Northeast households that fall within the delivery area and value scheduled grocery delivery or prepared foods more than nationwide store choice.
Check before ordering: enter your exact address, not just your state, and review the seasonal delivery zone, minimum order, fee, and DeliveryPass terms.
SNAP/EBT: which grocery delivery services support it?
SNAP/EBT support is a major differentiator, but it is not a universal service-level feature. Participation depends on the retailer, state, eligible items, and sometimes the payment workflow.
| Service | What to know about SNAP/EBT |
|---|---|
| Instacart | Users can filter for EBT-eligible items at participating retailers. Delivery, service fees, taxes, tips, and non-eligible items require another payment method. |
| Walmart | Supports SNAP/EBT online for eligible food. Qualifying government-assistance recipients can also apply for Walmart+ Assist at $49 annually or $6.47 monthly. |
| Shipt | Supports SNAP at selected retailers, including Target, Meijer, Dierbergs, and Hy-Vee. Verified recipients can access a $4.99 monthly SNAP membership. |
| Target Circle 360 | EBT users do not have to meet the normal $35 minimum, but a $7 delivery fee must be paid with another payment method. |
| Uber Eats | Supports SNAP at participating grocery stores. EBT cannot pay membership fees, delivery fees, tips, or other ineligible charges. |
| FreshDirect | Accepts SNAP/EBT for eligible products, but delivery and other fees cannot be paid with SNAP funds. |
Do not choose a service based only on a general statement that it accepts EBT. Add your state or EBT card, look for item-level eligibility badges, and check whether the retailer participates. SNAP rules and state restrictions are changing, so use the service’s current checkout information and your state’s official SNAP resources. In every case, keep a second payment method available for delivery, service, tax, tip, and non-eligible charges.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Delivery versus pickup: the lower-cost choice is often pickup
Pickup can be the cheapest option when you have access to a car and can collect the order on schedule. It removes delivery and often reduces service charges, but it still depends on store inventory and your time.

- Instacart: pickup is available at select retailers.
- Walmart: qualifying curbside pickup is free.
- Target: Drive Up is free and available at nearly every Target store nationwide.
- Whole Foods: pickup is free on orders of any size according to its official FAQ.
Separate the delivery labels carefully:
- Scheduled delivery reserves a future window and may be the best choice for a large weekly order.
- Same-day delivery means the order arrives that day, but it does not necessarily mean the shortest available window.
- Express delivery generally offers a faster window for an added charge.
- Rapid delivery is a specialized short-window service, such as Walmart’s 30-minute-or-less option in selected markets.
- Pickup avoids the driver-delivery leg but requires you to travel to the store.
Memberships generally do not guarantee faster delivery or a preferred slot. Instacart+ explicitly says it does not guarantee faster delivery or earlier time slots. Weather, inventory, shopper availability, and local capacity can affect every service.
Substitutions and grocery quality: compare controls, not promises
No platform can guarantee that every item will be available or that every delivery will have the same quality. Freshness and reliability depend on the store, shopper, inventory, weather, delivery window, and local operations. The useful comparison is how much control the service gives you when something is missing.
- Instacart: advance replacement preferences, the ability to reject substitutions, and live shopper communication.
- Walmart: customer-selected substitutions or the option to reject them, including special rules for SNAP orders.
- Shipt: shopper communication, special requests, and preferred shoppers.
- Uber Eats: replacement preferences, live order editing, and shopper chat.
For expensive, dietary, or household-essential items, set a specific replacement or choose no substitute. Review substitutions as soon as the notification arrives. After delivery, inspect produce, chilled goods, quantities, and expiration dates promptly so you can report a problem within the service’s stated support window.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Instacart cheaper than Walmart or the grocery store’s own delivery service?
Not universally. Instacart may offer better selection and easier multi-store shopping, but retailers set marketplace prices and some prices may differ from in-store prices. Compare the same basket, fees, and membership assumptions at the address where you will order.
Can SNAP or EBT pay grocery delivery fees?
Generally, no. SNAP/EBT can pay for eligible food at participating retailers, but delivery fees, service fees, taxes, tips, memberships, and non-eligible items generally require another payment method. Target Circle 360 EBT orders, for example, can avoid the usual $35 minimum but still have a $7 delivery fee paid separately.
Which grocery delivery service has the fastest delivery?
There is no nationwide winner because speed depends on address, inventory, shopper availability, and the delivery window you select. Same-day, express, and rapid delivery are different services. Walmart’s rapid option is described as 30 minutes or less in selected markets, while Amazon Now offers approximately 30-minute delivery in dozens of cities; both are market-specific and may cost extra.
Recommended Free Tools
Is a grocery delivery membership worth paying for?
It can be if you place enough qualifying orders to offset the membership fee and the service’s item prices and remaining fees are acceptable. Divide the annual fee by your expected qualifying orders, then compare that amount with the delivery fees you would otherwise pay. Do not assume a membership removes service fees, tips, taxes, or minimum-order charges.
What is the best grocery delivery service for shopping at multiple stores?
Instacart is the broadest default choice because it brings many local and national retailers into one marketplace. Target Circle 360 and Shipt can also be a strong multi-retailer option where the stores you use participate. Verify the retailer list and delivery terms with your address before subscribing.
The Bottom Line
The best grocery delivery service is the one that combines a nearby store’s assortment and prices with a fee structure that matches your ordering habits. Hungryroot is the top pick when meal planning and dietary goals drive your grocery order, Instacart is the best general-purpose choice for selection, Walmart+ is often the strongest value for Walmart households, Target Circle 360/Shipt is compelling for same-day multi-retailer shopping, Kroger Boost rewards Kroger loyalists, Amazon fits existing Prime members, and DoorDash, Uber Eats, and FreshDirect are useful in narrower situations.
Before committing, enter your address, build a representative cart, compare pickup and delivery, check SNAP/EBT eligibility if relevant, and inspect the complete checkout total—not just the membership price or advertised delivery fee.
