There is no universal winner among self-hosted S3-compatible object stores. MinIO is the focused object-storage choice to evaluate first, but its official GitHub repository was archived read-only on April 25, 2026. Ceph RGW is better when object storage belongs inside a Ceph cluster; SeaweedFS suits multi-interface deployments; Garage favors lightweight geo-distribution; Swift fits OpenStack; Ozone fits Hadoop and analytics; and VersityGW translates existing filesystems or object stores into an S3-facing service.

The decisive step is to test the exact S3 operations your application needs instead of trusting a binary “compatible” label.

Quick comparison

The best self-hosted S3-compatible object store depends on the storage architecture you actually need. MinIO is the most recognizable focused S3 option, but its official GitHub repository was archived and made read-only on April 25, 2026, so its maintenance and governance path must be checked before starting a new long-lived deployment. Ceph RGW is the stronger choice when object storage belongs inside a larger Ceph cluster. Garage is better suited to lightweight, geo-distributed installations, while SeaweedFS is compelling when one platform must expose S3, POSIX, HDFS-compatible, WebDAV, and Iceberg-related interfaces.

OpenStack Swift, Apache Ozone, and VersityGW are specialized choices rather than universal S3 replacements. Swift fits OpenStack operators, Ozone fits Hadoop and analytics environments, and VersityGW is primarily an adapter for exposing an existing filesystem or another object-storage service through an S3 API.

What “S3-compatible” means here

S3 compatibility is not a yes-or-no property. An implementation can accept basic bucket and object requests while differing from Amazon S3 in important control-plane behavior, authentication, error responses, addressing, or advanced features.

For example, one platform may handle multipart uploads and presigned URLs well but lack bucket policies or object-lock retention. Another may support versioning but implement it differently from AWS. A gateway may translate S3 requests to a filesystem or a different object store, adding another layer of metadata and behavior.

Before choosing a product, identify the operations your application actually uses. A backup system, analytics engine, media application, and immutable-archive workflow can place very different demands on an S3-compatible API. Test the exact SDK, client, or application against the intended deployment before migrating production data.

1. MinIO: best-known focused S3 object store, with a major status caveat

Choose MinIO when you want a focused object-storage product with an S3-oriented API and deployment options covering private cloud, bare metal, orchestrated environments, and edge infrastructure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MinIO remains an obvious product to evaluate because it is designed around object storage rather than being an S3 gateway attached to a broader platform. That can make the conceptual model simpler for a team that needs buckets and objects without also adopting a complete storage ecosystem.

Current-project warning: the official MinIO GitHub repository was archived and made read-only on April 25, 2026. That does not, by itself, prove that every MinIO distribution, support arrangement, or release path is unavailable. It does mean that maintenance, governance, security-update, distribution, and support assumptions must be verified before beginning a new long-lived installation.

This status caveat changes the recommendation. MinIO can still be a reasonable fit where an existing, supported distribution is available and the organization has verified its future path. It should not be presented as an uncomplicated default for every new deployment.

MinIO’s own client documentation also illustrates why compatibility testing matters: mc is tested with MinIO and AWS S3, but MinIO does not guarantee the same behavior against every other S3-compatible service. That is a warning about the ecosystem as a whole, not just a reason to prefer one vendor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Good fit: a focused S3 object-store deployment with flexible infrastructure choices.
  • Think twice if: the installation must remain maintainable for years and you have not verified the post-archive project or commercial support path.
  • Test carefully: the exact backup application, SDK, object-lock workflow, addressing style, and authentication method you plan to use.

2. Ceph Object Gateway: best for a broad storage platform

Choose Ceph Object Gateway, usually called RGW, when object storage is one part of a wider Ceph environment or when you also need Ceph’s broader storage ecosystem.

RGW exposes both S3-compatible and Swift-compatible APIs over a Ceph storage cluster. That allows object workloads to share a platform with other Ceph storage clients instead of operating a separate object-store product.

The trade-off is architectural. You are not merely installing a small S3 daemon; you are operating a distributed storage cluster with its own placement, failure, capacity, recovery, monitoring, and upgrade considerations. Describing Ceph as more operationally complex than a focused object store is an architectural inference from its broader design, not a universal benchmark or measured performance result.

Ceph documents support for a wide range of common S3 operations, but it also identifies partial or customized behavior. A client that works against AWS may still encounter differences in policy behavior, request handling, endpoint configuration, or less-common operations.

  • Good fit: organizations already running Ceph or deliberately building a unified distributed storage platform.
  • Think twice if: you only need a small object-storage service and do not want the administration of a full storage cluster.
  • Test carefully: the S3 and Swift operations used by your clients, including advanced policy, retention, versioning, and multipart workflows.

3. SeaweedFS: best for a multi-interface distributed storage engine

Choose SeaweedFS when the same storage system needs to serve more than one access model. Its current project material describes S3, POSIX, HDFS-compatible, WebDAV, and Iceberg-related interfaces from a shared cluster.

That range is useful when an organization is consolidating workloads that would otherwise require separate storage services. An S3 application, a POSIX-oriented workload, and an analytics pipeline may be able to use different interfaces while sharing the underlying storage engine.

Do not assume that every capability shown in current product material belongs to the open-source core. The project distinguishes Enterprise capabilities and support. Additional Enterprise features listed in the current material include expanded recovery options, customizable erasure coding, OIDC administration, multi-tenancy, S3 quality-of-service controls, and commercial support.

That edition boundary should be part of the design review, not discovered after deployment. Ask which feature is implemented in the edition you can run, whether it is available in the release you plan to use, and whether operational support is included or separately purchased.

  • Good fit: a distributed storage deployment that benefits from S3 plus POSIX, HDFS-compatible, WebDAV, or Iceberg-related access.
  • Think twice if: your design depends on an Enterprise-only capability but your budget or operating model assumes only the open-source core.
  • Test carefully: protocol-specific semantics, edition-dependent features, recovery behavior, and the exact S3 operations required by applications.

4. Garage: best for lightweight, geo-distributed self-hosting

Choose Garage when you want a relatively lightweight object store for a small or medium self-hosted deployment spanning different physical locations.

Garage is aimed at operators who value low operational weight and resilience when some servers are unreachable. That makes it relevant to homelabs, independent infrastructure, and modest deployments distributed across locations rather than a single large enterprise storage cluster.

Its simplicity comes with a compatibility trade-off. Garage’s documentation explicitly identifies S3 feature gaps, including unimplemented ACL or policy features. If an application depends on detailed AWS-style access controls, do not infer support from the presence of an S3 endpoint. Verify the exact feature list and test the authorization behavior you need.

Garage is therefore a good architectural fit when the core requirement is reliable self-hosted object storage across a manageable number of locations—not when complete AWS S3 control-plane parity is a hard requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Good fit: lightweight, geo-distributed storage for a small or medium cluster.
  • Think twice if: your application requires broad ACL, bucket-policy, or other advanced AWS S3 controls.
  • Test carefully: cross-location failure behavior, authentication, permissions, versioning, retention, and the client operations used in production.

5. OpenStack Swift: best for OpenStack-oriented operators

Choose OpenStack Swift when your organization already operates OpenStack or specifically wants Swift’s native object-storage architecture.

Swift provides S3 access through the s3api middleware in the proxy pipeline. In practical terms, S3 requests pass through a compatibility layer rather than Swift being a focused, S3-native product. Operators must configure the middleware and the surrounding proxy pipeline correctly for the deployment.

The official documentation presents this interface as an emulation layer with compatibility limitations. Consequently, Swift is a sensible choice inside an OpenStack-oriented environment but is usually not the simplest standalone recommendation for a reader who merely wants an S3 endpoint on self-managed servers.

  • Good fit: an existing OpenStack installation whose operators understand Swift’s proxy and middleware architecture.
  • Think twice if: you are starting from scratch and your only requirement is S3-compatible object storage.
  • Test carefully: middleware configuration, authentication, bucket and object operations, multipart uploads, versioning, and every application-specific feature.

6. Apache Ozone: best for Hadoop and analytics ecosystems

Choose Apache Ozone when the storage layer is being built around Hadoop, data-lake, or large-scale analytics infrastructure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ozone’s S3 Gateway is a separate component that translates S3 requests into Ozone operations. The gateway is stateless, which allows multiple instances to be placed behind a load balancer for horizontal scale and availability.

Ozone should not be described as a drop-in replacement with complete AWS S3 parity. Its current API documentation lists important limitations involving ACLs, bucket policies, CORS, website hosting, versioning, object locking, S3 Select, lifecycle management, replication, and event notifications.

Those gaps may be irrelevant to an analytics workload that needs basic object access, or decisive for an application that relies on immutable retention, browser-based cross-origin access, lifecycle automation, or event-driven processing. The right question is not whether Ozone has an S3 gateway; it is whether the documented subset covers your workload.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Good fit: Hadoop-centered storage, data lakes, and analytics environments that already align with Ozone’s architecture.
  • Think twice if: applications require object lock, lifecycle rules, event notifications, or other advanced S3 features listed as limited.
  • Test carefully: the gateway’s supported API subset, load-balancer behavior, authentication, versioning, policies, and analytics-client semantics.

7. VersityGW: best as a filesystem or S3 translation gateway

Choose VersityGW when the core requirement is to put an S3 API in front of storage you already have, rather than deploy a new object-storage cluster from scratch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VersityGW can expose a POSIX filesystem as S3 or proxy requests to another S3 backend. The documented backend options include POSIX, ScoutFS, Azure Blob, and another S3 service. This makes it useful as an adapter in environments where the underlying storage system is already selected.

For the POSIX backend, metadata depends on filesystem extended attributes. That is a material prerequisite: the filesystem and mount configuration must preserve the extended attributes the gateway needs. The documentation also lists supported POSIX-backend operations such as versioning, object-lock configuration, retention, legal hold, and multipart upload, while noting that some operations are unsupported. Support therefore needs to be checked by backend and operation, not inferred from a general S3 label.

In S3-backend mode, gateway-managed metadata can be stored in a designated metadata bucket. That adds another dependency to protect, monitor, back up, and include in recovery testing.

  • Good fit: an existing POSIX or other object-storage backend that needs an S3-compatible access layer.
  • Think twice if: you want the gateway itself to provide the complete behavior and operational model of a purpose-built object store.
  • Test carefully: filesystem extended attributes, metadata-bucket handling, versioning, retention, legal hold, multipart uploads, and unsupported operations for the chosen backend.

Capability Questions to answer
Multipart uploads Can the client initiate, upload parts, list parts, resume, abort, and complete an interrupted upload? Are size limits and error responses compatible with the application?
Versioning Are versions, overwrites, deletes, and delete markers handled as the client expects? Can the backup or migration tool list and restore the required versions?
Object lock and retention Are object-lock configuration, governance or compliance behavior where applicable, retention, legal hold, and deletion protection implemented? Can the application verify and restore locked data?
Bucket policies and ACLs Does the service support the authorization model your application requires, or only a simpler credential-based model? Are policy conditions and anonymous or cross-account patterns needed?
Lifecycle rules Can the service transition, expire, or clean up objects according to the rules you need? If lifecycle is absent or partial, what will perform that work?
Encryption Which encryption modes are available, where are keys managed, and can clients use the required headers or key-management workflow?
Notifications Can object events be sent to the queue, webhook, or event system your application expects? Verify event types, delivery behavior, and retry semantics.
Presigned URLs Do generated URLs work for the intended methods, expiration periods, headers, and network path?
Authentication Which S3 signing method, credentials, identity providers, tenant model, or administrative controls are supported?
Addressing style Does the client require path-style or virtual-hosted-style addressing? Can DNS, TLS certificates, proxies, and load balancers support the selected style?
Common-client behavior Does the exact SDK, backup application, analytics engine, or command-line client work with this implementation? Test real workflows rather than only a successful bucket listing.

A practical compatibility test

  1. Inventory the workload. Record every API operation used by the application, including background jobs and administrative tooling. Do not test only uploads and downloads.
  2. Create a non-production bucket. Use the same addressing, TLS, credentials, proxy, and load-balancer arrangement planned for production.
  3. Exercise data-path operations. Test small objects, large objects, multipart uploads, overwrites, deletes, retries, interrupted transfers, and concurrent access where relevant.
  4. Exercise control-plane operations. Test versioning, policies, ACLs, lifecycle, encryption, notifications, object lock, retention, and legal hold only if the workload needs them.
  5. Test URLs and authentication. Generate and consume presigned URLs, test expiration, confirm the required signing method, and verify both permitted and denied requests.
  6. Test failure and recovery. Simulate an unavailable gateway, node, disk, or location as appropriate. Confirm how clients retry and how operators restore service.
  7. Test the real application. A generic S3 test can pass while a backup, analytics, or archival product still fails because it depends on a less-common operation or a particular response format.

Deployment planning: storage architecture comes first

1. Calculate usable capacity, not just raw disk capacity

Start with the amount of data users must store, then account for replication or erasure coding, metadata, temporary multipart data, growth, rebuild space, and the failure tolerance you require. A set of disks whose raw total equals the expected dataset is not a capacity plan.

The correct disk choice also depends on the platform. Consider usable capacity, the number of simultaneous failures the design must tolerate, filesystem support, endurance, interface speed, rebuild or recovery behavior, and whether the software runs on a NAS, a bare-metal server, Kubernetes nodes, or a larger storage cluster.

For readers building a home lab or storage server, NAS hard drives can be a relevant infrastructure category to investigate. They are not mandatory for every design, no particular brand or capacity is established by this comparison, and a drive purchase does not replace redundancy, backups, monitoring, or a suitable storage platform.

2. Match the software to the server and network topology

Decide whether you are deploying a single server, several bare-metal nodes, a Kubernetes-based environment, or a geographically distributed cluster. Then verify that the chosen software’s storage and networking assumptions fit that topology.

  • Single-site deployments simplify latency and networking but can leave the site itself as a single failure domain.
  • Multi-site deployments can improve geographic resilience but introduce latency, bandwidth, quorum, repair, and failure-recovery questions.
  • Gateway-based designs need attention to load balancing, TLS termination, DNS, endpoint addressing, and gateway availability.
  • Shared storage platforms require capacity and failure planning for all workloads, not only the S3 buckets.

Ozone’s stateless S3 Gateway is explicitly suited to running multiple gateway instances behind a load balancer. VersityGW and Swift require equally careful attention to the components surrounding the S3 interface, even though their architectures differ.

Western Digital 8TB My Book Desktop External Hard Drive, USB 3.0, External HDD with Password Protection and Backup Software - WDBBGB0080HBK-NESN
  • Massive capacity, up to 22TB capacity. (1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.).Specific uses: Personal
  • Includes software for device management and backup with password protection (Download and installation required. Terms and conditions apply. User account registration may be required.)
  • 256-bit AES hardware encryption
  • SuperSpeed USB (5 Gbps); USB 2.0 compatible
  • Trusted storage built with WD reliability

3. Separate redundancy from backup

Replication or erasure coding helps a service continue operating after hardware or node failures. It does not automatically protect against accidental deletion, compromised credentials, application bugs, corruption propagated through replication, or a destructive operator action.

Plan an independent backup or recovery copy, document how metadata and object versions are handled, and perform a restore test. For object-lock or retention workloads, include the behavior of locked objects and legal holds in that recovery exercise.

4. Plan operations before importing data

  • Define who administers tenants, credentials, buckets, policies, and encryption keys.
  • Decide how you will monitor capacity, disk health, node health, API errors, failed uploads, replication or repair activity, and gateway availability.
  • Document upgrade and rollback procedures, especially where project governance or edition boundaries affect support.
  • Set capacity alerts before the first production migration.
  • Keep credentials and encryption keys outside the only storage system they protect.
  • Test a complete recovery path, not merely whether the service starts after a restart.

Which one should you choose?

Your situation First product to evaluate Why What to verify first
You want a focused S3 service MinIO, subject to its current project-status review Its design and deployment story are centered on object storage Current maintenance, distribution, support, release path, and application compatibility
You already run Ceph or need a broad storage platform Ceph Object Gateway S3 and Swift interfaces can share a Ceph cluster with other storage services Cluster-operational fit and any partial or Ceph-specific S3 behavior
You need several protocols from one cluster SeaweedFS It documents S3, POSIX, HDFS-compatible, WebDAV, and Iceberg-related interfaces Open-source versus Enterprise features and protocol-specific behavior
You need lightweight storage across locations Garage It targets small-to-medium geo-distributed self-hosting with low operational weight ACL, policy, retention, and other missing S3 features
You operate OpenStack OpenStack Swift Swift is native to that ecosystem and exposes S3 through proxy middleware Middleware configuration and emulation-layer limitations
You are building around Hadoop or analytics Apache Ozone Its S3 Gateway integrates with Ozone and can be scaled horizontally Documented gaps in locking, lifecycle, notifications, policies, and related features
You already have a filesystem or another object store VersityGW It translates POSIX, ScoutFS, Azure Blob, or another S3 backend into an S3-facing service Extended-attribute requirements, metadata storage, and backend-specific operation support

Final recommendation

Choose the storage architecture first, then verify the exact S3 operations your application requires. A focused object store, a Ceph-backed gateway, a multi-interface engine, a geo-distributed lightweight system, an OpenStack middleware layer, an analytics gateway, and a filesystem adapter solve different problems.

For a new deployment, do not select MinIO without investigating the April 25, 2026 repository archive and its current maintenance path. Do not select Garage, Ozone, Swift, or VersityGW on the assumption that an S3 endpoint guarantees complete AWS behavior. And do not treat redundancy, a larger disk, or a successful test upload as proof that the overall service is production-ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is S3-compatible object storage the same as Amazon S3?

No. “S3-compatible” means that a service exposes an S3-style API, not that it implements every Amazon S3 operation or behaves identically. Multipart uploads, versioning, object lock, retention, policies, ACLs, lifecycle rules, encryption, notifications, presigned URLs, authentication, and addressing style can differ substantially. Test the exact application and operations you need.

Which option is best for a small, geo-distributed self-hosted deployment?

Garage is the most natural first evaluation for a lightweight, small-to-medium deployment spread across locations. However, its documented S3 gaps, including unimplemented ACL or policy features, make it unsuitable without further testing when broad AWS-style control-plane compatibility is required.

Is MinIO still a good choice in 2026?

It can be, but the official MinIO GitHub repository was archived and made read-only on April 25, 2026. Before starting a new long-lived installation, verify the current distribution, release process, maintenance status, security-update path, and available support. Existing deployments should also review their upgrade and support assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which product can put an S3 API in front of an existing filesystem?

VersityGW is the most direct fit when you need to expose a POSIX filesystem, ScoutFS deployment, Azure Blob backend, or another S3 service through an S3 API. Its POSIX mode depends on filesystem extended attributes, and supported operations vary by backend, so validate metadata handling and the specific features your application uses.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: MinIO is the focused S3 option to investigate first only after verifying its post-archive maintenance and support path. Choose Ceph RGW for a broader Ceph platform, SeaweedFS for multiple interfaces, Garage for lightweight geo-distribution, Swift for OpenStack, Ozone for Hadoop and analytics, and VersityGW for exposing existing storage through S3. In every case, test the exact client and S3 features your workload depends on.
