You cannot retrieve or generate Instagram backup codes while fully logged out. Instagram only shows existing backup codes or creates a new set from inside an authenticated account session. If Instagram is still open on another phone, tablet, browser, or computer, use that session to view the codes. If no device is logged in, use another two-factor authentication method or Instagram’s official account-recovery process instead.
What Instagram backup codes are—and what they are not
Backup codes are recovery credentials created in Instagram’s two-factor-authentication settings. They provide an alternative way to complete login when a normal two-factor code cannot arrive because of connectivity, delivery, or access problems.
They are not publicly searchable account information. Instagram does not provide a logged-out lookup page, temporary code generator, or public support form that reveals the existing codes. A website claiming that it can generate your Instagram backup codes is not offering an official recovery method.
An authenticator-app code, SMS code, WhatsApp code, and Instagram backup code are also different things. You can use an authenticator app, text message, or WhatsApp only if that method was configured on the account and is still available to you.

If Instagram is still logged in on another device
Check every device and browser where you may have an active Instagram session before starting account recovery. This includes an old phone, tablet, work computer, or browser profile. Do not log out of the active session until you have secured the account and saved a working recovery method.
From the active session, open Instagram’s security settings. On the web, Instagram’s documented route is:
- Open Settings.
- Open Accounts Center.
- Select Password and security.
- Choose Two-factor authentication.
- Select the relevant Instagram account.
- Open Additional methods, then Backup Codes.
The same Accounts Center structure is used in the Instagram app, although the exact placement and labels can differ by app version, device, and region.
From the Backup Codes screen, save the codes somewhere secure. Instagram allows users to copy or otherwise store them for future use. A password manager or an offline protected location is safer than leaving a screenshot in an unprotected camera roll or sending the codes to another person.

If you think someone else may have seen the codes, generate a fresh set after confirming that you control the account. Treat previously exposed codes as compromised.

If you are completely logged out
When no device has an active session, you cannot open the backup-code list directly. Work through the following options in order.
1. Try another two-factor authentication method
At the Instagram login prompt, look for an option such as Try another way, Get support, or a similar alternate-method control. The exact wording can vary.
Depending on what was configured previously, Instagram may offer:

- An authentication app: Open the authenticator app previously linked to Instagram and enter the current code.
- SMS: Receive a code at the phone number still connected to the account.
- WhatsApp: Receive a code through WhatsApp if that option was enabled. Instagram’s documented setup requires text-message security to be enabled first.
You will not necessarily see every method. The available choices depend on the account’s previous security configuration and whether Instagram can verify the login attempt.
2. Request a login link
If you cannot use a two-factor method, use Instagram’s password-recovery route:

- On the login screen, select Forgot password? or the equivalent recovery option.
- Enter the account’s username, email address, or phone number.
- Complete any human-verification step Instagram displays.
- Request a login link by email or SMS.
A login link can help restore access, but it does not display the old backup codes. Once you regain access, open Accounts Center and create or view the backup-code list from the authenticated session.
3. Use Instagram’s hacked-account or account-access recovery flow
If the login link does not work—or you believe someone changed the password, email address, phone number, or two-factor settings—use Instagram’s official hacked-account or account-access recovery flow. Start from the Instagram app or Instagram’s official Help Center rather than from a link sent by a stranger.
Recovery steps are conditional. Instagram may show different forms and verification choices based on the account, device, location, previous activity, and suspected cause of the lockout.
4. Complete support and identity verification if Instagram offers it
After the login-link route fails, Instagram may offer an in-app or mobile recovery-support process. If prompted, provide a secure email address that only you can access. That address may be used for recovery communications, so secure the mailbox first and do not use an account controlled by another person.
In some cases, Instagram may request a video selfie to help verify identity. Instagram says submitted video selfies are not displayed on Instagram and are deleted within 30 days. This option is not guaranteed for every account, country, device, or lockout.

Meta has also described recovery systems that may use signals such as a trusted device or familiar location. These options are adaptive and may not appear for everyone.
5. Look for an email-change reversal
If an attacker changed the Instagram email address, search the original email inbox for a security message from security@mail.instagram.com. Where applicable, the message may include a Secure my account option that reverses the email change.
Verify the message carefully. Do not enter your password or codes into a lookalike website, and do not trust an unsolicited person who claims to be Instagram support. When in doubt, open Instagram or the official Help Center directly instead of using a link in a suspicious message.
What will not get you an Instagram backup code
- A backup-code generator: There is no legitimate public generator that can recreate your account’s codes.
- A lookup website: Existing codes are not available through a public Instagram search page.
- An authenticator app installed today: Installing an app now does not recreate the Instagram secret or old backup codes. It helps only if it was previously connected, or after you regain access and set it up.
- A new phone number: A number that was never configured on the account cannot receive its Instagram SMS codes.
- A security key or paid recovery product: Buying hardware or software cannot recreate backup codes that were never saved.
- A social-media “recovery expert”: Anyone asking for your password, backup code, SMS code, authenticator code, or recovery link may be attempting to take over the account.
Protect yourself from Instagram recovery scams
Never share any of the following with another person, including someone who claims to be Instagram or Meta support:
- Your Instagram password
- An SMS or WhatsApp security code
- An authenticator-app code
- An Instagram backup code
- A recovery or login link
- Access to the email account connected to Instagram
Meta warns that malicious accounts may send messages designed to collect passwords and other sensitive information. Authentic Instagram account communications can be checked in the app’s Emails from Instagram area; an unsolicited support direct message is not proof that the sender works for Instagram.

Use only recovery surfaces reached through the Instagram app or official Instagram and Meta properties. Secure the connected email account with a unique password and two-factor authentication as well, because control of that mailbox can allow an attacker to intercept recovery messages.
What to do immediately after you regain access
- Change the Instagram password. Use a unique password that has not been used on another site.
- Confirm the email address and phone number. Remove unfamiliar contact information.
- Review login activity. Sign out devices, locations, or sessions you do not recognize.
- Inspect Accounts Center. Check for unfamiliar linked accounts or account changes.
- Revoke suspicious third-party access. Remove apps and services you do not recognize or no longer need.
- Turn on two-factor authentication again. Instagram identifies authentication apps as a recommended option, although SMS or WhatsApp may be useful as an additional available method depending on your situation.
- Generate a fresh backup-code set. Store it in a secure password manager or protected offline location.
- Keep a second recovery method available. This reduces the risk of another lockout if you lose your phone or cannot access your authenticator app.
A password manager for unique passwords can help you store the Instagram password and backup codes in one protected place, while an authentication app can provide two-factor codes after it has been properly connected to the account. Neither tool can retrieve missing Instagram backup codes while you are locked out.
The short answer
If you are logged in somewhere, use that active session to open Accounts Center → Password and security → Two-factor authentication → Instagram account → Additional methods → Backup Codes. If you are logged out everywhere, Instagram will not reveal or generate the codes directly. Try another configured authentication method, request a login link, and then use Instagram’s official account-recovery or hacked-account process if necessary.

Instagram does not provide a generic backup code through a public support request. If you are locked out, use the available alternate authentication method, login-link flow, or official account-recovery process.
What if I lost my phone and cannot use my authenticator app?
Check whether Instagram is still logged in on another device. Otherwise, try SMS, WhatsApp, or another method that was previously configured. If none is available, request a login link and continue through Instagram’s official recovery flow.
Are Instagram backup codes reusable?
Do not assume a code remains available after use or after you generate a replacement set. Store the current set securely and create a fresh set if the old codes may have been exposed.
