Cin7 Core is the best overall inventory management software for growing businesses that sell through multiple channels. It combines purchasing, inventory, warehouse, accounting, integrations, kits, barcode scanning, and some manufacturing capabilities more effectively than the lighter options in this comparison.

It is not the right choice for everyone. Zoho Inventory is the better value for startups and small businesses, Shopify is the natural option for Shopify-first merchants, Fishbowl is stronger for QuickBooks-centered manufacturing and traceability, and Sortly is the easiest choice for simple, visual, mobile inventory tracking.

The best system depends on how your business buys, stores, makes, and sells products. A single Shopify store with one stockroom does not need the same software as a wholesaler operating several warehouses, a manufacturer tracking bills of materials, or a field team managing equipment and supplies.

This comparison focuses on the operational differences that matter most: sales channels, locations, order volume, accounting, purchasing, barcode workflows, kitting, manufacturing, and traceability. Prices and limits below reflect vendor information checked on August 11, 2026 UTC. Software pricing, included features, and availability can change, so confirm the final plan before purchasing.

Our recommendations at a glance

  • Choose Cin7 Core if multichannel selling, purchasing, wholesale, warehouse operations, and growth are central to the business.
  • Choose Zoho Inventory if you need real inventory controls and order workflows while keeping the entry price low.
  • Choose Shopify if Shopify is already the system of record and your inventory complexity is still moderate.
  • Choose Fishbowl if QuickBooks integration, manufacturing, warehouse execution, lot tracking, or traceability is more important than a quick setup.
  • Choose Sortly if the main requirement is easy visual tracking on phones and tablets rather than ecommerce order orchestration.

1. Cin7 Core: best overall for multichannel product businesses

Cin7 Core is the strongest general recommendation for a product business that has outgrown a storefront’s built-in inventory module. It is designed to connect ecommerce, marketplaces, wholesale, retail, fulfillment, shipping, point of sale, accounting, and other operational systems.

Its documented capabilities include purchase-order management, barcode scanning, kits and bundles, unlimited inventory locations, batch and expiration tracking, and assembly manufacturing. Forecasting and advanced warehouse functions are available through higher plans or optional capabilities. Businesses comparing cost and capacity should compare Cin7 Core plans rather than judging the platform only by its entry price.

Cin7 Core pricing and plan capacity

Plan Published price Included capacity highlighted in the vendor comparison
Core Standard $349/month Five users, two ecommerce or app integrations, 6,000 annual sales orders, and unlimited inventory locations
Core Pro $599/month Ten users, four integrations, 24,000 annual sales orders, and material requirements planning
Core Advanced $1,199/month Fifteen users, six integrations, 120,000 annual sales orders, and advanced warehouse management

Additional integrations, users, order volume, forecasting, and advanced functionality may cost extra. The practical price is therefore determined by more than the subscription tier.

Who should buy Cin7 Core?

Cin7 Core fits a brand that sells from its own website and marketplaces, supplies wholesale customers, operates more than one warehouse or fulfillment relationship, or needs purchasing and inventory to stay synchronized with accounting. It is also a better candidate than a basic commerce plugin when bundles, assemblies, batch dates, or multiple fulfillment paths are operationally important.

The trade-off is complexity and cost. A small seller with one channel, one location, and a limited catalog may pay for workflows it does not use. Before signing up, model users, integrations, annual orders, warehouse requirements, and add-ons against expected growth.

2. Zoho Inventory: best value for startups and small businesses

Zoho Inventory offers the most accessible entry point among the full-featured options in this comparison. It is particularly attractive to startups, smaller ecommerce companies, and businesses already using Zoho Books or other Zoho applications.

The feature set goes beyond a simple stock counter. Zoho documents item and item-group tracking, composite items and kitting, serial and batch tracking, FIFO cost-lot tracking, reorder levels, purchase orders, sales orders, invoices, warehouse receiving, shipping integrations, multiple sales channels, custom workflows, and mobile apps. You can review the current Zoho Inventory pricing before choosing a tier because order, user, location, and feature limits materially affect the value of each plan.

Zoho Inventory pricing and limits

The highest listed Enterprise tier is shown at $249 per organization per month when billed annually, with 15,000 orders per month, ten users, and ten locations. Intermediate tiers are available on the pricing page, but their exact limits and prices should be checked immediately before publication or purchase.

Zoho also offers a 14-day trial without requiring a credit card. That makes it a sensible platform for testing real workflows before committing, especially if the business can import representative products and orders.

Who should buy Zoho Inventory?

Choose Zoho Inventory when cost sensitivity matters but you still need purchase orders, reorder controls, serial or batch tracking, composite items, multiple channels, and mobile access. It is also a natural choice when Zoho Books is already part of the accounting workflow.

Be cautious if the business has complex warehouse execution, high-volume omnichannel operations, or sophisticated manufacturing requirements. Kitting and composite items are not the same as a complete manufacturing system with detailed production planning, labor costing, and advanced shop-floor control.

3. Shopify: best native option for Shopify-first merchants

Shopify is the most practical inventory choice when Shopify is already the primary commerce and point-of-sale platform. Its native tools track quantities by product variant and location and support real-time adjustments, transfers, purchase orders, receiving, bundles, subscriptions, preorders, returns, and sales across online, in-person, B2B, and other Shopify-connected channels.

For a merchant with a main Shopify store and a manageable number of locations, staying inside the Shopify ecosystem usually reduces the number of systems that employees must learn. Shopify Flow can automate workflows, and the app ecosystem can extend inventory capabilities. Start by reviewing the native Shopify inventory tools before adding another platform.

Where Shopify’s native inventory tools stop

Shopify’s built-in inventory layer does not provide every planning and replenishment feature a growing operation may need. Shopify’s own feature comparison identifies gaps including built-in auto-restock, forecasting, restock notifications, back-in-stock alerts, and replenishment reminders. These functions may be addressed with Shopify Flow or third-party apps, but each addition increases integration complexity and potentially raises the total cost.

Shopify may also become limiting when you need advanced purchasing, detailed demand planning, complex warehouse execution, extensive wholesale processes, lot and serial traceability, or manufacturing. In those cases, Shopify can remain the selling channel while a dedicated inventory or ERP system becomes the operational system of record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should use Shopify’s native inventory management?

It is a good fit for Shopify-first ecommerce businesses, retailers using Shopify POS, and merchants whose primary need is reliable stock synchronization rather than production planning or deep ERP functionality. If retail locations are important, evaluate Shopify POS inventory management together with the Shopify subscription and hardware configuration rather than assessing the online store in isolation.

4. Fishbowl: best for QuickBooks-linked manufacturing and warehouse operations

Fishbowl is aimed at businesses that make, move, and sell physical products while depending heavily on QuickBooks or requiring formal warehouse and manufacturing workflows. Its product structure distinguishes Fishbowl Inventory, aimed at finished-goods stocking and resale, from Fishbowl Advanced, which addresses manufacturing, multi-warehouse operations, 3PL, EDI, and more complex processes.

Businesses comparing the products should review Fishbowl pricing alongside implementation requirements, not just the advertised subscription. Fishbowl requires an implementation package that includes specialist support, data migration, training, and go-live assistance.

Fishbowl Inventory plans

Plan Published price Notable capabilities
Essentials From $229/month billed annually Two users, QuickBooks Online and Xero synchronization, real-time inventory and SKU tracking, reorder points, and mobile barcode scanning

Scale From $729/month billed annually Ten users, demand forecasting and planning, lot and forward/backward traceability, audit trails, compliance documents, and advanced reporting

Fishbowl Advanced

Fishbowl Advanced is listed from $595 per month for advanced warehousing and from $675 per month for advanced manufacturing. Final pricing depends on users and deployment. Manufacturing capabilities include bills of materials, subassemblies, material requirements planning, production scheduling, work orders, job, labor, and landed costing, lot and batch traceability, and mobile barcode scanning.

Fishbowl is the better fit when inventory is inseparable from production or warehouse execution. It is less attractive for a small online seller that mainly needs channel synchronization and basic stock counts because the implementation and operational overhead may outweigh the benefits.

5. Sortly: best for simple, visual, mobile-first tracking

Sortly is a different category of tool from Cin7 Core and Fishbowl. Its strength is making item records easy to browse and update visually on mobile devices, with photographs, organization, and alerts. That makes it suitable for small teams, field operations, equipment inventories, maintenance stock, supplies, and businesses that need to know what items they have and where they are.

Sortly’s help-center information identifies Free, Advanced, Ultra, Premium, and Enterprise plan categories. Paid plans include a 14-day trial, but Sortly states that plan types, prices, and features can change. Check the current plan page rather than relying on an old comparison article.

Who should use Sortly?

Use Sortly when the inventory is primarily items, equipment, supplies, or assets and the main priorities are visual organization, mobile access, and straightforward tracking. It can be easier to deploy than a full inventory ERP.

Do not assume it replaces a dedicated ecommerce or manufacturing platform. Validate accounting integrations, purchasing, sales-order workflows, multi-channel synchronization, warehouse picking, manufacturing, and traceability before selecting it for a product-selling operation.

How to choose inventory management software

1. Start with the operating model

Define the business before comparing features. A Shopify-first retailer, multichannel wholesaler, manufacturer, regulated distributor, and field-service team have different definitions of inventory control.

  • Retail or ecommerce: prioritize variant-level stock, channel synchronization, returns, bundles, and purchase orders.
  • Wholesale or distribution: prioritize customer-specific pricing, order volume, warehouse processes, fulfillment, and accounting synchronization.
  • Manufacturing: prioritize bills of materials, subassemblies, work orders, MRP, production scheduling, and costing.
  • Regulated or traceability-sensitive operations: prioritize lot, batch, serial, expiration, forward, and backward traceability plus audit history.
  • Field operations: prioritize mobile access, photos, locations, check-in/check-out, and simple item records.

2. Count channels and locations

List every place inventory is sold, stored, or fulfilled: websites, marketplaces, retail stores, wholesale channels, warehouses, 3PLs, pop-up locations, and consignment sites. A platform that works for one storefront may struggle when several locations and fulfillment paths must stay synchronized.

NETUM Bluetooth Barcode Scanner, Support 2.4G Wireless & Bluetooth & Wired
  • Widely Compatible: Bluetooth Barcode Scanner for iPhone iPad Android Tablet PC, Support HID / SPP / BLE mode via bluetooth, Work with Windows XP/7/8/10, Mac OS, Windows Mobile, Android OS, iOS, Linux.
  • Strong Recognition Ability: With the 2500 pixels high-resolution CCD sensor Engine, Rapidly decodes all 1D and stacked barcodes (including ISBN book), even worn, damaged or tightly spaced codes. Scan 1D codes directly from paper or screen, such as a computer monitor, smartphone, or tablet, or scan through glass surfaces, plastic shrink wrap, a CCD scanner is likely the best way to go.
  • Automatic Scanning: NT-1228bc barcode scanner have three scanning modes: manual trigger mode, continuous scanning mode and auto-sensing scanning mode. In addition, there is a storage mode. Storage mode can be used when you are out of range of Bluetooth and wireless connectivity. Supports storage of up to 100,000 barcodes. Note: Before use, you need to scan the corresponding setting barcode on the manual.
  • 2600mAh Battery Upgraded: Continuous scanning up to 200,000 times on a full charge. After a full charge the scanner can be used for one month at least, even in warehouses and at pos checkout counters where scanners are frequently used. In libraries and hospitals it can be used even longer.
  • Programmable Configuration: Add custom prefixes/ suffixes, delete characters, Add keyboard keys/ combinations (terminator TAB, CR&LF, Home etc.), Enable or disable the barcode type as you want. Buzzer can be set to mute to allow for a quiet operation.(Note: It does not work with square POS / Divalto / DoorDash / Lightspeed POS system)

Also distinguish a physical location from an integration. A plan may allow many inventory locations but limit the number of ecommerce or app integrations. Cin7 Core, Zoho Inventory, Fishbowl, and Shopify package these capacities differently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Calculate capacity, not just the monthly subscription

Estimate monthly and annual sales orders, active users, locations, integrations, SKUs, purchase orders, returns, and expected growth. Check what happens when the business exceeds a plan limit. A low headline price can become expensive after adding users, order volume, integrations, forecasting, POS, apps, or implementation services.

4. Separate simple kitting from manufacturing

A bundle or composite item may be enough when a business sells a fixed collection of existing products. Manufacturing is a different requirement when the business needs bills of materials, subassemblies, raw materials, work orders, production schedules, labor or landed costs, and traceability. Cin7 Core supports assembly manufacturing, while Fishbowl Advanced is the more manufacturing-focused option in this shortlist.

5. Match the accounting system

Accounting compatibility can reduce duplicate entry, but the existence of a connector does not prove that every workflow will synchronize correctly. If you need inventory software that integrates with QuickBooks, Xero, or Zoho Books, verify the exact connector and plan.

Ask specifically whether the integration is one-way or two-way and how it handles inventory valuation, cost of goods sold, purchase receipts, taxes, refunds, returns, adjustments, and multi-location transactions. Test the accounting export with realistic data before migration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Test receiving, counting, and adjustment history

Inventory accuracy is determined by daily processes, not by the feature list alone. During a trial, test:

  1. Receiving a purchase order in full and in part.
  2. Recording damaged, missing, or unexpected units.
  3. Moving stock between locations.
  4. Completing a cycle count and documenting an adjustment.
  5. Picking and packing an order with multiple items.
  6. Handling a return that is sellable, damaged, or incomplete.
  7. Scanning a barcode during receiving or counting.
  8. Viewing who changed a quantity and when.

7. Include implementation in the budget

Total cost can include data cleanup, migration, configuration, training, implementation services, extra users, additional integrations, order-volume increases, forecasting, barcode hardware, labels, POS equipment, and third-party apps. Fishbowl explicitly includes an implementation package, while other products may require different levels of outside assistance.

8. Run a real-data trial

Do not evaluate only with a clean demo catalog. Use representative SKUs, variants, bundles, purchase orders, partial receipts, returns, backorders, stock transfers, multiple locations, and accounting exports. Include the people who will receive, count, pick, pack, purchase, and reconcile inventory. This exposes workflow problems that a sales demonstration may hide.

If your situation is… Start with… Why
Multiple ecommerce, marketplace, wholesale, or retail channels Cin7 Core Broad integrations and deeper purchasing, inventory, warehouse, and product operations
Small business with a limited budget and growing controls Zoho Inventory Free entry tier, low-cost expansion path, reorder controls, kitting, and batch/serial features
One main Shopify store or Shopify POS operation Shopify native inventory Fewer systems and direct connection to the selling and POS workflows
QuickBooks-centered manufacturing or distribution Fishbowl Warehouse, production, costing, barcode, and traceability workflows

Large enterprise with broad financial and operational requirements Evaluate an ERP such as NetSuite, Acumatica, or Odoo separately The shortlist may not cover the organization’s full financial, manufacturing, or global operating model

Barcode hardware: useful, but not a software replacement

Barcode scanning can make receiving, cycle counts, stock checks, and warehouse picking faster and less error-prone, but a scanner does not fix poor SKU structure, bad receiving procedures, or incorrect system configuration. Cin7 Core, Fishbowl, and Shopify document barcode-related workflows.

  • Widely Use Range - This NetumScan Handheld USB barcode scanner can be used in supermarkets, convenience stores, warehouse, library, bookstore, drugstore, retail shop for file management, inventory tracking and POS(point of sale), etc.

If your chosen platform supports the hardware, an optional barcode scanner for inventory management can be useful. Check whether the device uses USB or Bluetooth, supports the barcode types you print, works with the relevant mobile operating system, and is compatible with the software’s scanning workflow.

A thermal barcode label printer and blank labels may also help businesses creating SKU, bin, shelf, or product labels. They are implementation accessories, not requirements for every buyer. Confirm label size, printer support, barcode format, durability, and the platform’s printing process before purchasing.

Common buying mistakes

  • Choosing by popularity: the most familiar brand may not match your channels, accounting system, or manufacturing model.
  • Confusing bundles with manufacturing: selling a kit does not necessarily require MRP, work orders, or labor costing.
  • Ignoring capacity limits: users, locations, integrations, and annual orders can be more important than the base subscription.
  • Assuming every integration is two-way: verify what happens to quantities, costs, refunds, returns, and accounting entries.
  • Underestimating migration: duplicate SKUs, inconsistent units, missing supplier data, and inaccurate opening quantities can undermine a new system.
  • Buying hardware first: scanners and label printers should be selected after confirming software and barcode compatibility.
  • Expecting native Shopify inventory to forecast demand: advanced replenishment may require Flow or third-party apps.
  • Skipping staff testing: the person receiving stock may discover problems that an administrator does not see in a demo.

Bottom line

Choose Cin7 Core for the strongest all-around fit among these options when multichannel operations and growth justify its price. Choose Zoho Inventory for the best accessible value, Shopify for straightforward Shopify-first inventory, Fishbowl for QuickBooks-linked manufacturing and traceability, and Sortly for simple visual tracking.

The right purchase is the one that accurately reflects how stock moves through your business. Test receiving, counts, transfers, returns, bundles, accounting, and real-data reporting before committing—especially when moving from a native commerce tool to a dedicated inventory or ERP platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best inventory management software for a small business?

Zoho Inventory is the strongest value-oriented choice for many small businesses because it has a free entry tier, mobile apps, reorder controls, purchase and sales orders, kitting, and batch or serial tracking. Shopify may be simpler if the business already runs entirely on Shopify, while Sortly may be better for equipment or supply tracking rather than ecommerce.

Is Shopify enough for inventory management?

Shopify is often enough for a Shopify-first merchant with moderate inventory complexity. Its native tools support variant and location quantities, transfers, purchase orders, receiving, bundles, returns, and online or in-person sales. Businesses needing built-in forecasting, auto-restock, advanced warehouse execution, complex manufacturing, or detailed lot and serial traceability may need apps or a dedicated inventory platform.

What is the best inventory software for manufacturing?

Fishbowl is the strongest manufacturing-focused recommendation in this comparison, particularly for businesses centered on QuickBooks. Fishbowl Advanced supports bills of materials, subassemblies, MRP, work orders, production scheduling, costing, lot and batch traceability, and barcode scanning. Cin7 Core may fit businesses whose manufacturing needs are primarily assembly-based within a broader multichannel operation.

Do I need an ERP or dedicated inventory system?

You may not need one if you have a single sales channel, few locations, modest order volume, and straightforward products. A dedicated system becomes more valuable when inventory is spread across channels or warehouses, purchasing and accounting need synchronization, orders are high volume, or the business requires manufacturing, traceability, forecasting, or formal warehouse workflows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I test before selecting inventory software?

Use representative products and test full and partial receiving, damaged units, transfers, cycle counts, barcode scans, multi-item picking, returns, backorders, bundles, multiple locations, user permissions, adjustment history, and accounting exports. Include the employees who will perform these tasks every day.

The Bottom Line

Best overall: Cin7 Core. Best value: Zoho Inventory. Best for Shopify merchants: Shopify’s native inventory tools. Best for manufacturing and QuickBooks-centered operations: Fishbowl. Best for simple mobile tracking: Sortly.
