Crunchyroll is the best overall anime streaming service for most U.S. viewers in 2026. It is built around anime rather than general entertainment, with current-season simulcasts, subtitles, dubs, offline viewing on eligible plans, games, and—in supported regions—manga access. Crunchyroll says its service includes more than 2,000 titles and has more than 15 million subscribers.
Netflix is the better choice for anime originals and mixed households, HIDIVE is the best specialist secondary service for selected exclusives, and Hulu makes the most sense when you already pay for its broader TV and movie catalog. The right answer ultimately depends less on a service’s headline catalog size than on whether it carries the specific shows, seasons, subtitles, and dubs you want to watch.
Quick verdict
| Service | Best for | Anime focus | Simultaneous streams and offline viewing | U.S. price information | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crunchyroll | Most anime-first viewers | Dedicated anime service with a large catalog, simulcasts, dubs, and exclusives | Fan: 1 device; Mega Fan: 4; Ultimate Fan: 6. Offline viewing is available on eligible plans. | Verify the current Fan, Mega Fan, and Ultimate Fan prices on the live membership page. | Availability, language tracks, plan benefits, and Ultimate Fan access vary by country. |
| Netflix | Originals, exclusives, and mixed households | Smaller anime selection than Crunchyroll, but strong mainstream, original, and exclusive releases | Plan-dependent streaming limits; downloads are available through supported mobile apps. | Standard with ads: $7.99/month; Standard: $17.99/month; Premium: $24.99/month, according to the current U.S. pricing page. | It is a general entertainment service, and anime availability varies substantially by region. |
| HIDIVE | Selected exclusives, niche titles, and a second anime subscription | Anime-first service focused on simulcasts, dubs, exclusives, and a curated library | Up to 2 devices; offline downloads are supported. | Official pages currently conflict: one lists $6.99/month or $69.99/year, while another lists $7.99/month or $79.99/year. Check checkout. | The catalog is smaller and more selective than Crunchyroll’s. |
| Hulu | Households that already want Hulu’s broader catalog | Useful anime selection within a general TV and movie service | Check the current plan and app documentation for download and device details. | Hulu with ads: $11.99/month; Hulu Premium: $18.99/month, according to current official pages. | Usually poor value as a standalone anime-only subscription. |
Prices are U.S. figures reported by the official pages reviewed for this guide. Taxes, promotions, app-store billing, bundles, annual plans, and price changes can alter the amount you pay.
For most anime-first viewers, the practical starting point is to try Crunchyroll. Add another service only when a specific show, exclusive, household need, or broader catalog justifies the extra monthly cost.

1. Crunchyroll — best overall anime streaming service
Crunchyroll is the clearest default recommendation because anime is its central product rather than one category among many. It is especially well suited to viewers who follow the current broadcast season, want a broad anime-first library, or regularly switch between subtitled and dubbed versions.
Why Crunchyroll leads
- Current-season coverage: Crunchyroll is designed around simulcasts and new anime releases, making it the strongest first stop for viewers who want to follow shows as they arrive.
- Anime-focused depth: Crunchyroll’s corporate materials describe a catalog of more than 2,000 titles. A title count is not a guarantee that it has every genre or franchise you want, but the service is more directly aligned with anime viewing than the general-purpose alternatives in this comparison.
- Subtitles and dubs: It offers both, although the available language track can differ by title, season, and country.
- Household streaming: Fan supports one simultaneous device, Mega Fan supports four, and Ultimate Fan supports six. Ultimate Fan availability is geographically limited.
- Extra anime-related benefits: Depending on plan and region, Crunchyroll also supports offline viewing, games, manga access, and membership-related merchandise benefits.
Crunchyroll also operates an anime merchandise store. Its membership information indicates that the store experience is planned to transition in August 2026, with the new experience intended for Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan members; the exact launch date was not announced in the source reviewed. Treat that as a changing 2026 benefit, not a permanent reason to select a plan.
Which Crunchyroll plan should you consider?
- Fan: The straightforward choice for one viewer who mainly wants premium anime access and does not need multiple simultaneous streams.
- Mega Fan: The more practical household tier when several people may watch at once or when its additional eligible benefits matter to you.
- Ultimate Fan: Intended for heavier users who need up to six simultaneous streams and are in a region where the tier is offered.
Crunchyroll’s current U.S. plan prices were not reliably exposed in the research results, so do not rely on a cached price from an older comparison. Open the live membership page immediately before subscribing and check whether the displayed amount is monthly or annual, whether taxes are added, and whether the benefits apply in your location.
Who should not choose Crunchyroll first?
Crunchyroll is less compelling if your anime watchlist consists mainly of Netflix originals, or if anime is only a small part of your household’s viewing. It also cannot guarantee universal access: licensing varies by country, and one series may be split across different services or have some seasons missing. Check the exact title and season before paying.

2. Netflix — best for originals, exclusives, and casual households
Netflix is the best alternative when you want anime alongside a large general entertainment library. It should be viewed as a complement to Crunchyroll rather than a complete replacement for a dedicated anime service.
Why Netflix is a strong anime choice
- Original and exclusive releases: Netflix is a particularly sensible choice when one or more shows on your list are Netflix originals or are exclusive to the service in your market.
- Mixed-household value: The same subscription can serve viewers who want anime, live-action series, films, documentaries, and children’s programming.
- Beginner-friendly experience: A viewer who already knows Netflix’s interface may prefer it to adding a specialist service.
- Broad device support: Netflix supports smart TVs, phones, tablets, computers, game consoles, and streaming devices. Downloads are available through supported mobile applications.
Netflix’s anime selection is smaller than Crunchyroll’s in the comparison research, but it is strong for popular, accessible, original, and exclusive titles. Do not interpret that as a universal ranking of quality: a smaller catalog can still be the right catalog if it contains the show you want.

Netflix U.S. plans
The current U.S. pricing page reviewed for this guide lists Standard with ads at $7.99 per month, Standard at $17.99 per month, and Premium at $24.99 per month. Netflix prices and plan availability are subject to change, and the effective price may differ with taxes, promotions, bundles, or third-party billing.
Plan features can also change. Before subscribing for anime, verify the current simultaneous-stream allowance, download rules, video quality, and whether the specific title you want is available on the plan you selected.
Choose Netflix when
- You specifically want a Netflix original or exclusive.
- Your household already pays for Netflix and watches plenty of non-anime content.
- You prefer one general streaming service instead of a dedicated anime subscription.
- You want downloads on a supported phone or tablet for travel.
Choose Crunchyroll instead when most of your viewing is current-season anime, when you want a deeper anime-first catalog, or when you need anime-specific features and higher simultaneous-stream tiers.
3. HIDIVE — best for selected exclusives and niche coverage
HIDIVE is a legitimate anime-first service, but its value is more selective than Crunchyroll’s. It is most useful when your watchlist contains HIDIVE exclusives, particular simulcasts, dubs, or niche and mature catalog titles that are not available on your primary service.
What HIDIVE offers
- New releases from the latest Japanese broadcast season.
- Selected simulcasts and exclusive titles.
- Subtitles and dubs, subject to title and regional availability.
- The full HIDIVE library for subscribers.
- Offline downloads.
- Viewing on up to two devices at the same time.
That makes HIDIVE a strong second subscription for dedicated fans. It is also a reasonable lower-cost first subscription if its current catalog matches your watchlist, but a low monthly price does not help if the service lacks the shows you actually intend to watch.
HIDIVE pricing needs a checkout check
HIDIVE’s official pages reviewed for this article show conflicting U.S. prices. The support center lists $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year, while the main welcome page displays $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year. Because both figures come from official HIDIVE pages, the safest advice is to confirm the amount on the live signup or checkout screen rather than treating either figure as permanently authoritative.

Offers may vary by page, date, billing method, or promotion. Check the renewal price and whether the annual amount is charged immediately before completing registration.
Choose HIDIVE when
- A specific HIDIVE exclusive is high on your watchlist.
- You have checked that the service carries the seasons and language tracks you want.
- You want a second anime service rather than another general entertainment subscription.
- You need offline downloads or two simultaneous devices and the current price fits your budget.
If you want the broadest anime-first starting point without researching every title individually, Crunchyroll remains the safer default.
4. Hulu — best when anime is part of a broader TV subscription
Hulu is a general-purpose streaming service, not an anime specialist. It belongs in this comparison because it can be a convenient U.S. anime source for households that already want Hulu’s current television, Hulu Originals, films, kids’ programming, and wider entertainment library.
The official pages reviewed list Hulu with ads at $11.99 per month and Hulu Premium at $18.99 per month. Verify the live price, plan features, and any bundle terms before subscribing.

When Hulu makes sense
- You already pay for Hulu and want to watch anime without adding another bill.
- Several people in the household prioritize current TV and movies more than anime depth.
- A particular anime you want is currently available on Hulu and you also value the rest of its catalog.
- You are comparing a broader entertainment package rather than an anime-only service.
Why Hulu is not the top anime pick
Hulu’s anime catalog is subject to licensing and should be checked title by title. It is generally less compelling than Crunchyroll for current-season tracking, anime-specific catalog depth, and specialist features. Do not assume that a title available through Hulu will also be available through another Disney-controlled product or bundle, or that its availability will remain unchanged.
Services that are useful but not top-ranked
Prime Video
Prime Video can be useful for individual anime titles, but anime may be offered through included programming, rentals, purchases, or add-on channels. The research did not establish a stable, official U.S. anime-specific price or a consistently comparable catalog measure. Treat Prime Video as a title-by-title supplement rather than the clear winner for anime.

Max and Disney+
Max and Disney+ can carry important animation and selected anime, including high-profile licensed or original projects. They are broader entertainment services, however, and were not established in this comparison as the best standalone anime subscriptions. They become more relevant when a particular exclusive, franchise, bundle, or household need drives the decision.
RetroCrush and other niche services
Niche services can be excellent for particular eras, publishers, or catalog segments. The research available for this guide was not sufficient to support a current U.S. price-and-catalog comparison strong enough for a top-level ranking. Research them separately if your priority is classic anime or a specific historical catalog.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo you need more than one anime streaming service?
Most viewers should start with one service, test their actual watchlist, and add a second only when the missing titles justify the cost. Owning every service at once is rarely the most economical strategy because anime licensing is fragmented and titles move.
- Write down the shows you actually plan to watch. Include the exact season, film, or episode collection, not just the franchise name.
- Check Crunchyroll first. It is the best starting point when the list is dominated by current-season anime, dubs, and anime-first catalog depth.
- Add Netflix for a specific reason. That reason might be a Netflix original, an exclusive, or the household’s need for a general entertainment library.
- Add HIDIVE only for its titles. Look for a genuine gap in your watchlist instead of subscribing because it is another anime-branded service.
- Keep Hulu when it already earns its place. If your household uses Hulu for broader television and movies, its anime selection can be a useful extra. Do not buy it solely because it has some anime.
- Rotate subscriptions when practical. If a service has only one short list of must-watch shows, subscribe for a month or an available annual term, finish the list, and reassess before renewal.
How to check whether a show is legally available
Streaming rights are country-, plan-, language-, and date-dependent. Use this checklist before starting a subscription:
- Search the official service app or website. Do not rely only on an old article, search-engine result, or social-media post.
- Check the season and format. A service may carry season two but not season one, or a series but not its film or special.
- Open the audio and subtitle menu. Confirm the dub or subtitle language you need. Language tracks can differ by region and title.
- Check your country. A licensing statement about availability in the U.S. does not establish availability in Canada, the U.K., Australia, or another market.
- Check the plan requirement. Some features, including offline viewing or higher simultaneous-stream limits, are limited by plan.
- Check the renewal terms. Promotional pricing can expire, and annual billing may charge the full amount immediately.
Do not treat the words original, exclusive, simulcast, and available in the U.S. as interchangeable. An original may be produced for a service but licensed elsewhere in another country; an exclusive may refer only to a particular market or time period; and a simulcast does not guarantee every dub or subtitle language.

If your television lacks the required apps, a 4K streaming stick can be a practical way to run supported services on an older compatible TV. It is not a requirement for anime streaming and does not by itself guarantee better picture quality, fewer buffering problems, or access to a title. Check the device’s supported apps, HDMI requirements, Wi-Fi capabilities, and the TV’s available ports before purchasing.
For offline viewing, use the service’s official mobile app and verify the plan and title requirements. Crunchyroll supports offline viewing on eligible plans, Netflix supports downloads through supported mobile applications, and HIDIVE advertises offline downloads. Do not assume that every title, device, or Hulu plan supports downloads.
Price and catalog freshness
Streaming comparisons age quickly. The figures in this guide are U.S. prices from the official pages reviewed during the research pass, not a promise of what every reader will see in 2026. Before publication or purchase, recheck:
- The live monthly and annual price.
- Taxes and app-store billing charges, if applicable.
- Promotional and introductory pricing expiration dates.
- Bundle or third-party package terms.
- Simultaneous-stream limits.
- Offline-download eligibility.
- Video quality and supported devices.
- The exact shows, seasons, dubs, and subtitles available in your country.
No legal streaming service has every anime. A large reported title count also does not automatically mean better coverage of your preferred genres, studios, eras, or language tracks. Choose based on the shows you will actually watch, then verify the service’s current terms.

Is Crunchyroll better than Netflix for anime?
For most anime-first viewers, yes. Crunchyroll is focused on anime and is the stronger choice for current-season releases, anime catalog depth, dubs, and anime-specific features. Netflix is better when you prioritize Netflix originals or want anime alongside a broad general entertainment library.
Is HIDIVE worth paying for if I already have Crunchyroll?
It can be, but only when HIDIVE carries specific exclusives, simulcasts, dubs, or niche titles on your watchlist. Check the current catalog and checkout price first. HIDIVE’s official pages reviewed for this guide showed different U.S. prices, so verify the amount before subscribing.
Can one anime streaming service provide every show?
No. Licensing is divided by country, service, plan, season, and date. A service may have one season but not another, or subtitles but not the dub you want. Check the exact title and season in the official app or website before signing up.
Which anime streaming service is cheapest?
The answer depends on current promotions, billing method, and whether you already pay for another service. Netflix and Hulu have clearly listed U.S. prices in the research pass, while HIDIVE’s official pages conflict and Crunchyroll’s current plan prices were not reliably exposed. Compare the live checkout price with the titles you intend to watch rather than choosing from a headline monthly figure alone.

The Bottom Line
Choose Crunchyroll first if anime is your main viewing priority. Choose Netflix for originals, exclusives, and mixed households; HIDIVE for specific niche or exclusive titles; and Hulu when its broader TV and movie catalog already justifies the subscription. Build your decision around your actual watchlist, verify the exact season and language track in your country, and recheck prices before the billing date.
