Most Android users do not need to install a third-party antivirus app. On a Google-certified phone that receives security updates, Google Play Protect, automatic Android and app updates, a secure screen lock, and careful downloading provide a strong baseline.

A third-party security app becomes more useful if you sideload APKs, use third-party app stores, own a phone without Google services, use an outdated device, want stronger scam or phishing protection, or need one subscription for several family devices. Based on the latest cited independent tests, Bitdefender Mobile Security is the best paid overall choice, while Sophos Intercept X for Mobile is the best free third-party option. Play Protect remains the best starting point because it is already built into supported Android devices.

Quick recommendations

Need Best choice Why Main qualification
Best overall paid app Bitdefender Mobile Security 100% protection in AV-Comparatives’ May 2026 Android test and 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 test. It is a paid product and several features require an account and subscription.
Best free third-party app Sophos Intercept X for Mobile Free for individual users and scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 test. Availability and some features vary by device and region.
Best built-in protection Google Play Protect Already integrated into supported Android phones and scans apps from Google Play and other sources. It scored below the strongest third-party products in the latest cited independent tests.
Best for sideloading ESET Mobile Security or Dr.Web Security Space Both provide real-time scanning and additional security controls; ESET adds anti-phishing, anti-smishing, payment protection, and scheduled scans. ESET’s strongest cited result is from 2025, while the latest located Dr.Web Android lab result is much older.
Best for scam and phishing protection Norton 360, Bitdefender, ESET, or Malwarebytes These products add web, SMS, notification, malicious-link, or scam-focused protections. Supported message apps, permissions, features, and prices vary.
Best cross-platform suite Norton 360, McAfee, F-Secure Total, or Bitdefender Total Security Useful when the same subscription must protect Android, Windows, macOS, or family devices. Compare a multi-device subscription with a mobile-only plan before buying.

How the independent tests compare

App-store ratings are not a reliable way to compare malware detection. This shortlist gives more weight to recent tests from AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives, then considers useful Android features, free-tier restrictions, permissions, product support, and subscription clarity.

AV-TEST tested 12 Android security products in May 2026 using default settings. Protection, performance, and usability each receive a maximum of six points. AV-Comparatives tested nine products on Android 16 using 3,156 unique malicious applications and 500 clean apps for false-positive testing. These are snapshots of particular products, versions, samples, and dates—not permanent guarantees.

AV-Comparatives, Mobile Security Review 2026

Product Malware protection False positives
Bitdefender 100.0% 2
Kaspersky 99.9% 1
Tencent 99.8% 6
Avast 99.6% 2
AVG 99.6% 2
Norton 99.6% 2
G DATA 99.2% 4
Securion 99.0% 9
Google Play Protect 98.9% 8

AV-Comparatives found only a minor battery-life effect in its tested daily-use scenario. That should not be turned into a universal claim that every antivirus app has negligible battery impact on every phone. The lab awarded its Approved Mobile Product designation to every tested product except Play Protect, using thresholds of at least 99% malware protection, no more than 10 false positives, battery impact below 8%, and reliable core features.

There is also useful endurance evidence from AV-TEST’s January 2026 report, which covered July through December 2025 and almost 9,000 new plus 9,000 known malware samples. Avast, AVG, Avira, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, and Norton achieved 100% protection across the reported sets. Sophos, McAfee, and TotalAV made minor protection errors, while Play Protect recorded 99.6% real-time protection and 99.7% protection against the reference set.

The 14 best Android antivirus and anti-malware apps

The following are 14 third-party products. Google Play Protect is covered separately because it is an Android-integrated baseline, not another app that most users need to download.

1. Bitdefender Mobile Security — best overall paid antivirus

Best for: users who want the strongest current independent-test evidence with a focused set of extra protections.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bitdefender Mobile Security includes malware scanning, automatic scanning of installed apps, web protection, anti-theft tools, app lock, account-breach checks, scam protection, call blocking, and a limited VPN component. It supports Android 6 and later, and requires an internet connection for activation and cloud scanning. See Bitdefender’s Android requirements and feature information.

Evidence: Bitdefender detected 100% of the malware in AV-Comparatives’ May 2026 test with two false positives, and scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 round.

Trade-offs: it is paid, asks users to create an account, and some features require a subscription or broad permissions. AV-Comparatives initially found an issue with remote anti-theft commands, which the vendor reportedly fixed after notification.

Verdict: the best overall paid choice based on the latest cited lab evidence—not a guarantee that it will detect every future or targeted threat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Sophos Intercept X for Mobile — best free third-party app

Best for: people who want free, ad-free third-party protection without buying a full consumer security bundle.

Sophos provides malware and ransomware protection, potentially unwanted application detection, malicious-site and unsafe-download blocking, phishing-text detection, Wi-Fi checks, a privacy adviser, QR-code scanning, a password safe, and an authenticator. Sophos offers the app free for individual users; enterprise controls belong to Sophos Central rather than the unmanaged consumer app. Check the current Sophos product page and local app-store availability.

Evidence: it scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 test. The longer AV-TEST report covering the second half of 2025 noted minor protection errors for Sophos, so the newer May round is the more relevant cited result.

Verdict: the best free third-party recommendation when available, especially for users who do not need a VPN, identity-monitoring package, or multi-device subscription.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. ESET Mobile Security — best for sideloading and detailed controls

Best for: users who install APKs or want configurable scanning, payment protection, anti-phishing, and anti-theft controls.

The basic app includes antivirus and real-time scanning. Premium adds anti-phishing, anti-smishing, payment protection, proactive anti-theft, app lock, scheduled scanning, security audit, and call filtering. ESET requires Android 9 or later and does not support rooted devices; individual features can depend on the Android version and phone.

Evidence: ESET scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s March 2025 Android test, with 99.8% real-time protection and 99.9% detection of widespread recent malware in the detailed January 2025 record. It was not part of the cited May 2026 AV-TEST round, so do not present its older result as a current 2026 head-to-head score.

Verdict: a strong feature-rich option for sideloaders, but its cited Android lab evidence is older than Bitdefender’s and Sophos’ latest results. See ESET Mobile Security.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Avast One for Android — best feature-rich free option

Best for: users who want a broad free app with scanning, web protection, Wi-Fi checks, and several privacy extras.

Important name change: Avast’s current Android direction is Avast One. Avast says the newer app is replacing legacy Avast Mobile Security and the previous Avast One app, with migration rolling out as availability expands. Its features include device scanning, malware shields, web protection, Wi-Fi scanning, scam guidance, app insights, breach alerts, a photo vault, and optional app lock and VPN features.

Evidence: Avast scored 99.6% protection with two false positives in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 test and 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 test.

  • Works with:Motorola ThinkPhone.
  • Package include:2x Glass Screen Protector, 2x Wet/Dry Wipes, 2x Dust Dust-absorber and Installation and Use Guidance.

Trade-offs: the free tier is ad-supported and premium features are gated. Older reviews may refer to Avast Mobile Security, so verify that the current Google Play listing is the app you intend to install. Read Avast’s migration information and current feature details.

5. AVG AntiVirus Free — best AVG-branded alternative

Best for: readers who prefer AVG’s interface, branding, or existing subscription.

AVG offers malware scanning, safe browsing, Wi-Fi security, app auditing, breach checking, a photo vault, and optimization utilities. It scored 99.6% protection with two false positives in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 test and 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 test.

Important qualification: AV-Comparatives identifies Avast, AVG, and Norton as Gen Digital products using the Avast engine. They can still differ in interface, support, pricing, and bundled features, but their results should not be treated as three completely independent malware-engine victories.

Verdict: a valid free or freemium alternative, particularly for existing AVG users. Choosing it over Avast is primarily a branding, interface, plan, and feature-availability decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Avira Antivirus Security — best lightweight general-purpose alternative

Best for: users who want general malware protection with optional privacy and identity-related services.

Avira provides malware scanning, real-time protection, phishing and ransomware protection, and spyware and adware detection. Optional plans can add VPN or identity-related services. Avira scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 test and achieved 100% protection in the cited AV-TEST endurance report covering July through December 2025.

Trade-offs: features and subscription tiers vary by country, and vendor pages often combine Android, Windows, macOS, and iOS features. Confirm the exact Android free tier before subscribing.

Verdict: a credible free or freemium option, though users primarily seeking SMS scam protection or anti-theft controls may find another app more suitable. See Avira’s current product page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Norton 360 — best broad consumer security suite

Best for: users who want malware protection bundled with a VPN, scam protection, and identity-monitoring features across multiple devices.

Norton offers malware protection, App Advisor, Safe Web, Wi-Fi alerts, scam protection, and, in qualifying plans, a VPN plus dark-web or identity monitoring. Norton Mobile Security and Norton 360 for Mobile are not identical: Norton says 360 adds features such as Secure VPN and Dark Web Monitoring.

Evidence: Norton scored 99.6% protection with two false positives in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 test and 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 test. Its AV-TEST endurance result recorded flawless protection but an overall 17.7/18 after a non-protection deduction.

Trade-offs: Norton is more expensive and bundled than a simple scanner. Plan features, introductory pricing, renewal pricing, and availability vary by country. Compare the exact plan at Norton’s Android product page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. McAfee Security — best when included in an existing plan

Best for: users already paying for a McAfee multi-device subscription or wanting a suite with web, privacy, VPN, and scam features.

McAfee’s Android offering includes malware protection, web protection, Wi-Fi checks, app and privacy tools, scam protection, and subscription-dependent VPN or password features. It scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 test. The longer AV-TEST report found minor real-time protection errors but full reference-set detection and awarded a full overall score.

Trade-offs: old reviews may describe discontinued features or an obsolete interface. Confirm the current app name, plan, device limit, renewal price, and included features before purchasing.

Verdict: sensible when bundled with computers or family devices, but usually harder to justify as a standalone mobile-only purchase. See McAfee’s mobile security page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. F-Secure Total — best for antivirus, VPN, and identity protection together

Best for: households that want antivirus, browsing protection, scam protection, VPN, and identity tools in one subscription.

F-Secure Total is the current consumer product name. Depending on the plan, it includes real-time malware protection, browsing and phishing protection, banking protection, ad blocking, VPN, breach alerts, password or identity protection, and SMS scam protection.

  • Superior Service: Should you have any problems with our products we will do our best to help you.

Evidence: F-Secure Total Security & VPN scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 test.

Trade-offs: full functionality requires an account and paid plan. F-Secure’s older Mobile Security branding and current Total offering should not be treated as identical products; check the exact subscription components at F-Secure Total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: a strong cross-platform suite, particularly if the family already uses F-Secure elsewhere.

10. Kaspersky Premium for Android — strongest alternative test result, with regional caveats

Best for: users seeking extensive anti-theft, privacy, app-lock, safe-browsing, and security-audit features.

Features reported in the AV-Comparatives review include configurable antivirus monitoring, Lock & Locate, alarm, mugshot, SIM Watch, uninstallation protection, safe browsing, Wi-Fi security, app lock, safe messaging, call filtering, identity monitoring, and weak-setting checks.

Evidence: Kaspersky achieved 99.9% protection with one false positive in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 test and scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regional qualification: availability, payment options, and suitability are country-dependent. Do not assume the app is available in the reader’s local Google Play catalog, particularly in the United States. Check local availability and relevant institutional guidance before recommending or buying it.

Verdict: technically strong in the cited tests, but it needs a prominent country and trust caveat rather than an unqualified global recommendation.

11. G DATA Mobile Security — best lab-supported niche alternative

Best for: users who want a straightforward security app with anti-theft and privacy features.

G DATA achieved 99.2% protection with four false positives in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 test. AV-Comparatives reported that its anti-theft functions worked flawlessly in the review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trade-offs: G DATA is less familiar to many US readers. Check current Android requirements, price, app availability, subscription terms, and supported features directly before buying.

Verdict: a credible, independently tested alternative, but not one of the clearest top-three choices for the average Android owner.

12. Trend Micro Mobile Security — best for web, banking, and phishing defenses

Best for: users who prioritize malicious-link, SMS, shopping, banking, and phishing protection.

Trend Micro includes Security Scan, Web Guard, pre-installation scanning, Fraud Buster, Wi-Fi Checker, Pay Guard Mobile, parental controls, app management, and unwanted-app controls. It scored 6/6/5 in AV-TEST’s March 2025 Android test; it was not included in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 nine-product review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important discontinued feature: Trend Micro says Lost Device Protection for Android ended after October 2025. Do not advertise current location tracking, remote locking, remote wiping, or thief-photo functions as part of this product.

Verdict: worth considering for its banking and scam focus, but its strongest cited Android lab result is older. See current Android features and the lost-device discontinuation notice.

13. Malwarebytes for Android — best for scam protection and second opinions

Best for: readers familiar with Malwarebytes who want malware scanning, infostealer protection, or a second opinion during troubleshooting.

Malwarebytes says its current app provides malware scanning and real-time protection against infostealers, malicious apps, and infected files. Its July 2026 mobile announcement also describes Scam Text and Call Protection. Current documentation lists Android 9 through Android 17 and requires an active internet connection for installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evidence limitation: the latest located consumer Android AV-TEST result is from July 2020. Newer Malwarebytes AV-TEST results found in the research were Windows results, not Android results. It therefore should not be presented as having current Android lab parity with the leading May 2026 products.

Rank #4
BIESHKJ 3 Pack For Samsung Galaxy A13 Privacy Screen Protector, 9H Hardness Anti-Spy Tempered Glass, Scratch-Resistant ,Anti-fingerprint,bubble free, easy install
  • PACKAGE CONTENTS: 3 privacy screen protectors, 3 wet/dry wipes, and dust-proof stickers for Samsung Galaxy A13
  • PRIVACY PROTECTION: Advanced anti-spy technology blocks side-angle viewing in public places while maintaining front-view clarity

  • CRYSTAL CLEAR DISPLAY: High-definition transparency maintains original screen resolution while preventing fingerprints, smudges, and water marks
  • EASY INSTALLATION: Includes alignment frame for precise, bubble-free application - perfect for beginners and experienced users alike

Verdict: a useful anti-malware and scam-protection alternative, especially for troubleshooting, but not the evidence leader. See current requirements and the scam-protection announcement.

14. Dr.Web Security Space — best for advanced security controls

Best for: experienced users who want quarantine, file-system monitoring, URL filtering, call and SMS filtering, a firewall, and security auditing.

Dr.Web offers real-time file-system protection, ransomware protection, on-demand scanning, quarantine, anti-theft, call and SMS filtering, URL filtering, a firewall, parental controls, statistics, and a security auditor. The vendor lists support for Android 5.0 through Android 16.0.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evidence limitation: the latest located AV-TEST Android result for Dr.Web dates from March 2017. Current performance therefore should not be described as independently verified by the latest major Android lab tests.

Verdict: a feature-rich niche alternative for advanced users, not a first choice for readers who want the newest independent evidence. See Dr.Web’s current Android page.

Google Play Protect: the baseline most users should keep

Google Play Protect is not a conventional third-party antivirus download. It is integrated into Google Play and supported certified Android devices, and Google says it is enabled by default.

Play Protect checks apps before they are downloaded from Google Play, scans installed apps—including apps installed outside Google Play—warns about potentially harmful apps, and may deactivate or remove harmful apps. It can also issue privacy alerts, reset permissions on some Android versions, and block some unverified apps using sensitive permissions associated with financial fraud.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its current test results are good but not unbeatable: AV-Comparatives measured 98.9% protection and eight false positives in its 2026 test, while AV-TEST gave it 5.5/6 for protection and 5/6 for usability in May 2026. That makes Play Protect a strong baseline, not the highest-scoring product in every test.

How to check Play Protect

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile picture.
  3. Tap Play Protect.
  4. Tap Scan.
  5. Tap the settings gear.
  6. Keep Scan apps with Play Protect enabled.
  7. If you install APKs, consider enabling Improve harmful app detection. This allows unknown apps to be sent to Google for analysis.

Labels can differ between Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and other Android builds. Google recommends leaving Play Protect enabled even when another antivirus app is installed.

Do you actually need antivirus on Android?

Your situation Recommended approach
You download apps only from Google Play, keep Android updated, and use a current certified phone Play Protect is usually enough. Focus on updates, account security, permissions, backups, and avoiding scam links.
You regularly install APKs or use third-party app stores Keep Play Protect enabled and consider ESET, Bitdefender, Sophos, or another reputable app with current evidence. Check the APK source, signature, permissions, and update path.
Your phone lacks Google Mobile Services or Play Protect A reputable security app, trusted app source, timely updates, and careful permission review become more important. Verify that the security app supports your platform.
Your device no longer receives security patches An antivirus app may detect some malicious apps, but it cannot patch the Android kernel, modem, browser, or vendor components. Replacing the phone is often the safer answer.
You are mainly worried about phishing, scam texts, or fraudulent calls Choose a product with the specific web, SMS, notification, or call protection you need. Malware scanning alone does not stop every social-engineering attack.
You need coverage for Windows, macOS, or family devices Compare Norton 360, McAfee, F-Secure Total, and Bitdefender multi-device plans. Do not compare a mobile-only plan with a family bundle as if they were the same product.
You use a business-managed phone Follow the organization’s mobile-device-management policy. Consumer antivirus apps may overlap with or conflict with enterprise controls.

Android’s application sandbox gives each app its own user identity and process-level boundary. Ordinary apps cannot freely read one another’s private data or control the operating system. This is important protection, but it is not absolute: operating-system vulnerabilities, excessive permissions, accessibility abuse, overlays, rooted devices, and social engineering can still create risk.

Antivirus, web protection, scam protection, VPN, and cleaners are different

An antivirus app may scan installed apps and files, detect potentially harmful applications, or block malicious websites. Other features solve different problems:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Web or phishing protection checks links and websites before you interact with them.
  • Scam protection may analyze SMS messages, notifications, calls, or supported messaging apps.
  • Banking or payment protection may defend against overlays or unsafe environments, but it cannot recover credentials voluntarily entered into a phishing site, stop a SIM swap, or reverse a fraudulent transaction.
  • Privacy auditing reviews app permissions and device settings.
  • Anti-theft may provide vendor-specific location, lock, alarm, or wipe features, subject to permissions and connectivity.
  • A VPN encrypts network traffic in transit. It does not make a malicious app trustworthy or prevent phishing by itself.
  • Cleaner, booster, and RAM-optimizer tools may help with storage management, but their presence is not evidence that the antivirus engine detects malware. Aggressive task killers can also create unnecessary notifications and confusion.

No app can guarantee detection of every future or targeted threat, protect you after you give a scammer a password or one-time code, recover a stolen account, patch an unupdated phone, or inspect every other app’s private data. Installing five scanners at once is also counterproductive: overlapping real-time protection can create duplicate alerts, permission conflicts, battery use, and uncertainty about which warning matters.

Native theft protection: use Find Hub first

You do not need a third-party antivirus app for ordinary remote location, locking, or erasure on a supported Android phone. Google’s Find Hub can locate, ring, mark as lost, or erase a device when it has power, an internet connection, a Google Account, Find Hub enabled, and visibility on Google Play.

  1. Open android.com/find on another device.
  2. Sign in with the Google Account associated with the lost phone.
  3. Select the device.
  4. Choose Play sound, Mark as lost, or Factory reset.

A remote factory reset is effectively irreversible for local data. After erasing, Find Hub can no longer show the device’s location, and Google warns that SD-card data may not be erased. Third-party anti-theft features have similar prerequisites: the phone must generally be powered on, connected, logged into the correct account, granted the required privileges, and able to communicate with the vendor.

Android 15 and later also introduced or expanded theft-related protections, Private Space, Identity Check, notification privacy, and restrictions affecting sensitive permissions and sideloaded apps. Availability depends on the phone model, Android version, manufacturer, and region.

How to install and configure an Android antivirus app safely

  1. Use Google Play where possible. Search for the vendor’s verified listing and confirm the developer name. Avoid installing an antivirus APK from an unsolicited message, pop-up, QR code, or unknown download site.
  2. Install only one always-on security app. Play Protect can remain enabled alongside it. Remove old security suites before adding a replacement.
  3. Review the free-versus-paid boundary. Check whether the free tier includes real-time scanning or only manual scans, whether it shows ads, requires an account, expires after a trial, or limits protection to one device.
  4. Run the initial scan. Allow the app to update its malware definitions or connect to its cloud service, then scan installed apps and files if the product supports it.
  5. Enable only useful protections. Web, SMS, call, notification, VPN, accessibility, device-admin, and location access each have a purpose, but do not grant a permission merely because the app requests it. Read the explanation and Android’s permission screen.
  6. Configure theft protection before the phone is lost. Set up the vendor account and test the required privileges. Also enable Google’s Find Hub.
  7. Check battery and notification behavior. A reputable app may need background activity. If it produces constant advertisements, alarming false warnings, or unexplained battery use, review its settings and consider uninstalling it.
  8. Keep Android and apps updated. An antivirus app supplements security patches; it cannot replace them.

Permissions that deserve extra scrutiny

Accessibility access can let an app observe or interact with the screen. Notification access can expose message contents. SMS and call access can reveal communications. Device-admin access can make uninstalling harder. A VPN permission can route traffic through the security provider. Overlay access can place windows above other apps. These permissions can be legitimate for specific security features, but a malicious app with them can cause serious harm. If a security app’s requested access does not match its advertised function, do not install it.

How to scan for and remove Android malware

Do not keep interacting with suspicious pop-ups, fake virus warnings, urgent support messages, or unknown callers. If the phone appears to be sending messages, making purchases, or showing remote-control behavior, temporarily disconnect it from Wi-Fi and mobile data while you investigate.

  1. Run Play Protect. Use Google Play Store → profile picture → Play Protect → Scan.
  2. Review recently installed apps. Prioritize apps installed from APK files, advertisements, messages, QR codes, or third-party stores.
  3. Remove suspicious privileges. Before uninstalling, check Accessibility, Device admin apps, Install unknown apps, Display over other apps, Notification access, VPN, default SMS/browser/dialer, unrestricted battery, and background-data settings for unfamiliar entries.
  4. Uninstall the suspicious app. If Android refuses, first revoke its device-admin, accessibility, overlay, notification, VPN, or other special access. Menu names differ between manufacturers.
  5. Update the phone and all apps. Install available Android security updates and app updates from trusted sources.
  6. Run one reputable second scan. Use one current, reputable third-party scanner if the problem persists. Do not install several competing scanners simultaneously.
  7. Protect your accounts from a clean device. Change passwords, revoke suspicious sessions, enable multifactor authentication, and contact your bank or payment provider if financial information may have been exposed.
  8. Factory-reset as a last resort. Back up only essential personal files, reset the phone, and restore apps from Google Play rather than automatically restoring unknown APKs or a complete device image.

If the problem is caused by a compromised account, a scam, or a malicious browser notification rather than malware, an antivirus scan may be clean. Continue with password changes, session revocation, browser notification cleanup, and financial-account checks.

Important Android edge cases

Sideloading

Installing an APK outside Google Play does not automatically mean the app is malicious. Risk depends on the source, signing, permissions, update path, and behavior. Play Protect can scan apps from other sources, while a third-party security app may add another reputation engine, file scanner, or pre-installation check.

Phones without Google services

Some modified Android distributions, mainland-China devices, Fire OS products, HarmonyOS variants, and custom ROMs may lack Google Mobile Services or Play Protect. On these devices, a reputable security product, trusted app source, timely updates, and careful permission review become more important. Confirm that the chosen app supports the platform; a Google Play-only app may not be usable.

Rooted or unlocked phones

Rooting can weaken Android’s default protections and cause security apps or individual features to stop working. ESET explicitly does not support rooted devices. Rooting is not a recommended way to improve ordinary consumer security.

Old Android versions

An antivirus app may identify malicious applications, but it cannot patch an unsupported Android kernel, modem, vendor component, or browser. If a phone no longer receives security updates, replacing it may provide more protection than adding another scanner.

Samsung and other manufacturer security tools

Some manufacturers include app scanning, device protection, Secure Folder, theft protection, or a security dashboard. Check what is already active before installing another always-on product. Duplicate tools can create overlapping alerts, permissions, battery use, or user confusion.

Tablets and Chromebooks

Android tablets generally use the same Play Protect baseline, but app layouts and supported features can differ. Chromebook Android-app compatibility also varies, and a phone app’s anti-theft, call, SMS, or VPN features may not make sense on a Chromebook. Check the current Play listing, minimum Android version, and supported device types.

Why some popular-looking apps are not in this top 14

The Google Play listing for Cleaner Antivirus VPN Cleaner advertises antivirus, cleaning, and VPN features, but no current AV-TEST or AV-Comparatives Android result was located for it. Its marketing claims therefore do not establish detection performance alongside Bitdefender, Sophos, Norton, or other independently tested products. A large download count or high app-store rating is not a substitute for current malware testing.

Likewise, products such as Malwarebytes and Dr.Web remain useful possibilities for particular users, but their latest located Android lab evidence is older or absent from the newest major comparisons. That limitation is included in their reviews rather than hidden.

Android security checklist

  • Keep Play Protect enabled.
  • Install Android security updates and app updates promptly.
  • Use a strong screen lock and biometric protection where appropriate.
  • Enable Find Hub and verify that the device appears at android.com/find.
  • Maintain an independent backup of important photos and files.
  • Keep Install unknown apps disabled except when actively needed.
  • Review Accessibility, Device admin, overlay, notification, VPN, and unknown-app permissions regularly.
  • Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication.
  • Never provide passwords, payment details, or one-time codes to an unsolicited caller or message.
  • Do not treat a VPN, cleaner, RAM booster, or antivirus badge as proof that an app or website is trustworthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Android phones need antivirus apps?

Usually not if the phone is Google-certified, receives security updates, uses Google Play, keeps Play Protect enabled, and is used cautiously. A third-party app is more useful for sideloaders, unsupported devices, phones without Google services, scam protection, or multi-device subscriptions.

Is Google Play Protect enough?

For many ordinary users, yes. It scans Google Play apps and apps from other sources and can warn about, disable, or remove harmful apps. However, recent tests placed it below the strongest third-party products for malware protection, so high-risk users may benefit from an additional reputable app.

What is the best free antivirus for Android?

Sophos Intercept X for Mobile is the strongest free third-party recommendation in this comparison because it is free for individual users and scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 test. Play Protect is the free built-in baseline that everyone should keep enabled.

What is the best Android antivirus for sideloading APKs?

ESET Mobile Security and Dr.Web Security Space are good feature-oriented choices, while Bitdefender and Sophos have stronger recent cited independent evidence. No antivirus makes an unknown APK automatically safe; examine its source, signature, permissions, and update path.

Can an antivirus app remove spyware?

It may detect and remove some spyware or malicious apps, but no app guarantees detection of every targeted threat. Also check Accessibility, Device admin, overlay, notification, VPN, and unknown-app permissions. If malicious behavior continues, protect accounts from a clean device and factory-reset the phone.

Should I install two antivirus apps?

No. Use Play Protect plus, at most, one reputable third-party app with always-on protection. Multiple competing scanners can create duplicate alerts, permission conflicts, battery use, and confusion.

Is a VPN the same as antivirus protection?

No. A VPN primarily encrypts network traffic in transit. It does not make a malicious app safe, guarantee that a website is legitimate, or replace malware, phishing, account, and device-update protections.

Can antivirus protect my banking app?

Some products offer payment protection, overlay defenses, safe browsing, or scam detection. Those controls do not prevent every phishing attack, stolen password, SIM swap, social-engineering scam, or fraudulent transaction. Use multifactor authentication and contact your bank immediately if information may have been exposed.

What should I do if a malicious app will not uninstall?

Disconnect the phone if it is actively misbehaving, then revoke the app’s Device admin, Accessibility, overlay, notification, VPN, or other special access and try uninstalling again. Android menu labels vary by manufacturer. If the behavior persists, back up essential files and factory-reset the device.

Does a factory reset remove Android malware?

A factory reset removes locally installed apps and data and is the last-resort step for persistent malicious behavior. Back up only essential personal files, then reinstall apps from Google Play rather than restoring unknown APKs or a complete questionable device image.

Why does an antivirus app request Accessibility or VPN access?

Those permissions can support legitimate features such as screen-aware scam detection or traffic inspection, but they are powerful. Grant them only when the vendor clearly explains the need and you trust the app. A malicious app with such access can observe or interfere with other activity.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with Play Protect, updates, a screen lock, Find Hub, backups, and cautious downloading. Choose Bitdefender Mobile Security if you want the strongest current paid test result, or Sophos Intercept X for Mobile if you want a free third-party layer. Choose ESET or Dr.Web for advanced sideloading controls, and Norton 360, McAfee, F-Secure Total, or Bitdefender’s broader plans when cross-device coverage matters. No antivirus replaces security patches, careful permissions, multifactor authentication, or skepticism toward urgent messages and links.
