Historical note: This article documents Claude Code pricing and limits as they stood in August 2025. Anthropic has since changed some plan features, business access, commands, and overage options. Use the current Claude pricing and help pages before subscribing.
In August 2025, Claude Code was included with paid individual plans—not the Free plan. Pro cost $20 per month or $200 per year, while Max offered $100 and $200 monthly tiers. None of these plans provided unlimited usage or a guaranteed number of prompts. Claude Code consumption depended on the size and complexity of the work, the model selected, files and project context, and other usage across Claude.
Claude Code plans in August 2025
Claude Code was Anthropic’s terminal-based coding tool for working with repositories, editing files, running commands, and reviewing changes. For individual users, access was tied to a paid Claude subscription.
| Plan | August 2025 price | Claude Code access | Approximate usage position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No | Claude chat only, with its own session limits |
| Pro | $20/month or $200/year | Yes | At least 5× Free usage during a five-hour session in peak periods |
| Max 5× | $100/month | Yes | About 5× Pro usage |
| Max 20× | $200/month | Yes | About 20× Pro usage |
The “5×” and “20×” labels were relative capacity descriptions. They did not mean 5 or 20 times a fixed number of prompts, hours, or tokens. Anthropic used usage budgets rather than a simple published prompt counter.

How Claude Code usage limits worked
The main individual-plan limit was a rolling five-hour usage window. When the allowance was consumed, Claude Code displayed a reset time and stopped processing subscription requests until the window became available again.
In late August 2025, Anthropic also began adding weekly limits to Pro and Max. The rollout was scheduled to begin on August 28, 2025. Anthropic said the change was expected to affect fewer than 5% of subscribers at the time, with the focus on unusually heavy use such as running Claude Code continuously, sharing an account, or reselling access.
A weekly limit was not a stated number of prompts per week. It was another usage budget that could be consumed faster or slower depending on the work being done.
What uses the allowance?
There was no reliable public table converting a plan into a fixed number of Claude Code prompts. Two users on the same plan could reach a limit at very different times because consumption was affected by:
- Prompt and conversation length
- Previous conversation history carried into the request
- Attached files and project context
- The selected Claude model
- Tool calls and command execution
- Extended thinking or higher-effort settings
- Overall service demand and capacity management
A short request in a small repository therefore did not necessarily consume the same amount as a long debugging session that scanned a large codebase, executed multiple tools, and retained a substantial conversation history.
Claude chat and Claude Code could share usage
Claude Code did not necessarily have a completely separate quota from Claude’s web app. Usage across Claude surfaces could draw from the same account-level subscription allowance.

For example, someone who spent much of the afternoon using Claude in the browser could open Claude Code and find less capacity remaining than expected. Conversely, heavy Claude Code usage could reduce the capacity available in the web app.
This shared-pool behavior explains why a user might hit a limit shortly after starting a new terminal session. The five-hour window relates to account usage, not simply the time since that particular terminal was opened.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat the Max plans did—and did not—provide
Max 5× and Max 20× were designed for users who needed substantially more capacity than Pro. The higher tiers were useful for frequent coding sessions, larger repositories, and users who regularly encountered the Pro limit.
However, Max did not mean unlimited Claude Code. Max subscribers still had usage budgets, five-hour limits, and, beginning in late August 2025, weekly limits. The 5× and 20× figures should be read as relative plan capacity, not as guaranteed hours of autonomous coding.
Anthropic also did not publish a dependable August 2025 promise such as “Max 5× provides 100 hours” or “Pro provides exactly 100 prompts every five hours.” Those claims confuse a variable usage budget with a fixed quota.
Business access in August 2025
Anthropic announced Claude Code support for business plans on August 20, 2025. The announcement described access through upgraded premium seats for Team and Enterprise organizations.

Administrators could assign standard or premium seats. Premium seats included Claude and Claude Code along with more usage. Consequently, it was inaccurate to say that every Team user automatically received Claude Code. Access depended on the organization’s plan, seat type, and administrator configuration.
If Claude Code was missing from a business account, the administrator needed to check whether the user had the appropriate premium seat rather than assuming the terminal installation was broken.
How to check your usage
From the Claude interface
- Open Claude.
- Open Settings.
- Select Usage.
- Review the available usage information and the next reset time.
The current Claude interface uses this path. Weekly limits, where applicable, reset at a fixed account-specific time; they do not necessarily reset five hours after each user begins working.
From Claude Code
Inside an active Claude Code session, run:
/usage
The command displays plan usage, reset information, and activity statistics. Current documentation also lists /cost and /stats as aliases.

Subscription login versus API billing
Claude Code can authenticate in two different ways:
- Claude subscription authentication: Uses the Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise allowance.
- API authentication: Uses an Anthropic API key and pay-as-you-go API billing.
If the environment contains an approved ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, Claude Code may use that key instead of the subscription’s OAuth login. Requests then count against the API or Console account and its API rate limits. They do not become part of the Pro or Max subscription allowance.

How to identify the type of limit error
Not every failed request means that your subscription quota is exhausted. Claude Code reports several different conditions.
| Message or symptom | Likely meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
You've hit your session limit · resets 3:45pm |
The five-hour subscription allowance was reached. | Wait for the displayed reset time. |
You've hit your weekly limit · resets Mon 12:00am |
The weekly subscription allowance was reached. | Wait for the weekly reset. |
You've hit your Opus limit · resets 3:45pm |
A model-specific limit was reached. | Wait for the reset or use an available model, if offered. |
API Error: Server is temporarily limiting requests |
A temporary service-side throttle. | Retry later; this does not automatically mean the plan quota is exhausted. |
HTTP 429 |
An API key, Amazon Bedrock project, or Google Vertex AI project may have hit a rate limit. | Run /status and check the relevant provider account. |
When a subscription limit is reached, Claude Code normally blocks further requests until the time shown in the message. A temporary server throttle may clear sooner and should not be treated as proof that Anthropic is experiencing a general outage.

What was not available as an August 2025 assumption
Anthropic now documents usage credits for paid plans, which can allow additional usage to be billed at standard API rates after the included allowance is exhausted. The current interface path is Settings → Usage → Usage credits → Enable, and the current Claude Code command is:
/usage-credits
That feature and command should not be backdated to the August 2025 snapshot. Earlier documentation used /extra-usage, while current documentation uses /usage-credits. If you are researching what was available in August 2025, do not describe the current credit system as part of the original Pro or Max offering.
Practical ways to avoid hitting the limit early
- Check
/usagebefore a long task. Confirm how much capacity remains and when it resets. - Keep conversations focused. A long history can increase the amount of context sent with later requests.
- Limit unnecessary project context. Avoid attaching or loading files that are not relevant to the current change.
- Separate unrelated tasks. A focused session is easier to control than one conversation covering an entire project.
- Check authentication before troubleshooting quotas. Use
/statusto distinguish subscription usage from API billing. - Do not treat Max as unlimited. Plan for the weekly limit as well as the five-hour limit.
FAQ
Was Claude Code free in August 2025?
No. Individual Claude Code access was tied to paid Pro or Max plans. The Free plan provided Claude chat access but not Claude Code.
How many Claude Code prompts did Pro include every five hours?
Anthropic did not publish a dependable fixed prompt count. Usage varied with message length, context, files, model choice, tools, thinking settings, and demand.
Recommended Free Tools
Did the $100 Max plan provide unlimited Claude Code?
No. Max 5× offered substantially more capacity than Pro, but it still had five-hour usage limits and, from late August 2025, weekly limits.
Why does Claude Code say I reached a limit even though I barely used the terminal?
Claude and Claude Code could draw from the same account-level allowance. Heavy use in Claude’s web app may have consumed capacity before the terminal session began. An API credential or a temporary server throttle can also produce a different limit error; run `/status` to check.
The Bottom Line
For the August 2025 snapshot, Claude Code required a paid plan: Pro was $20 per month, Max 5× was $100 per month, and Max 20× was $200 per month. The plans used variable five-hour usage budgets rather than fixed prompt counts. Late-August weekly limits added another restriction, and Claude plus Claude Code could share the same allowance. Max increased capacity but was not unlimited, while business access depended on premium-seat configuration. Always check /usage and /status before assuming a failure is a subscription-quota problem.
