Online therapy services differ more than their home pages suggest. Some are subscription apps with messaging, some connect you with insurance-accepting independent clinicians, and others simply let you book a cash-pay telehealth appointment. Session length, state availability, insurance contracts, psychiatry access, and cancellation rules can change the real cost.
The options below are category-based recommendations, not an objective quality ranking. Prices and coverage were checked for the U.S. on August 8, 2026, but verify the final amount and provider availability before booking.

The 10 top online therapy options
1. Talkspace: best all-around subscription platform
Talkspace is a broad option if you want therapy, psychiatry, couples counseling, teen therapy, and multiple ways to communicate in one service. Its out-of-pocket plans currently start at $69 per week for messaging, $99 per week for video plus messaging, and $109 per week for video, messaging, and workshops.
The video plans include up to four 30-minute sessions per month. The messaging plan is asynchronous: it promises therapist responses five days per week, not an instant or continuous chat service. Talkspace accepts many major insurance plans, although the copay and covered services depend on the specific policy.
#1 Best Overall
- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
Psychiatry is separately priced for self-pay customers: $299 for the initial appointment and $175 for quarterly follow-ups. Talkspace is a practical first choice if you want a single platform with several types of mental-health care, but compare the included session length and recurring billing before subscribing.
2. BetterHelp: best for flexible communication when paying out of pocket
BetterHelp provides video, phone, and in-app messaging with a matched therapist. Its published self-pay pricing generally falls between $70 and $100 per week, billed weekly or every four weeks. The exact price can change based on location, therapist availability, preferences, referral source, and discounts.
BetterHelp is not uniformly in-network nationwide. Some therapists accept insurance in selected states and plans, so do not assume that an insurance card will reduce the price.
Messaging is useful when you want to write between live appointments, but it is not emergency support and does not guarantee an immediate response. Privacy-conscious users should also know that the FTC finalized a 2023 order requiring BetterHelp to pay $7.8 million and prohibiting the company from sharing sensitive health data for advertising after alleging disclosures involving email addresses, IP addresses, and questionnaire information. That historical enforcement action does not establish that every current interaction is handled identically, but it is relevant when comparing services.

3. Grow Therapy: best for comparing individual therapists with insurance
Grow Therapy works more like a therapist marketplace than a single subscription clinic. You can filter providers by specialty, identity, availability, and care approach, inspect profiles, and book directly.
Grow says most clients start in about two days and that insured clients pay an average of $21 per session or less. That figure is not a guaranteed copay. The actual amount depends on your insurer, deductible, coinsurance, plan rules, and selected provider. Self-pay prices appear on individual provider profiles.
The cost-estimate form requests information such as your legal name, date of birth, state, insurance name, member ID, and email. If you are uncomfortable entering those details before choosing a therapist, contact your insurer directly and ask whether the specific provider is in network.
4. Rula: best for rapid insurance-based matching
Rula advertises more than 21,000 licensed providers and says video appointments may be available as soon as the next day. It lists coverage from more than 100 commercial plans and says it accepts Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid in many states.

Rula advertises an average insured cost of $15 per session. Its published cash prices are $150 for an individual therapy session and $165 for family or couples therapy. The average insurance figure should be treated as an estimate, not a quote.
Rula is a good fit if speed and insurance matching matter more than browsing a large number of profiles yourself. State licensure and provider availability still determine whether a particular appointment can take place.
5. Headway: best insurance-first therapist directory
Headway does not charge a flat therapy subscription or membership fee. Instead, it connects patients with independent therapists and psychiatrists who accept participating insurance. You pay the cost-sharing required by your plan: a copay, coinsurance, or deductible.
Headway says it operates in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., but that does not mean every therapist or insurance plan is available everywhere. Search results depend on your state, policy, provider contracts, and appointment availability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis is one of the cleaner choices for people who want to use insurance and understand the normal healthcare billing model. It is less suitable if you want a simple weekly cash price without checking deductible and network details.
6. Brightside Health: best for anxiety or depression care with optional medication
Brightside offers therapy, psychiatry, or combined care after a free clinical assessment. Its self-pay therapy plan costs $299 per month and includes four video sessions plus unlimited messaging. Additional 55-minute sessions cost $59 each. The combined psychiatry-and-therapy plan is $349 per month.
Brightside says appointments may be available within 24–48 hours, although actual timing varies by state and provider. Its structure can work well when you want therapy and medication evaluation coordinated through one service.
Remember that a therapy subscription does not automatically include diagnosis, prescription management, or psychiatric appointments. Those services must be included in the selected plan or booked separately.

7. Thriveworks: best for online or in-person care through insurance
Thriveworks combines online therapy with in-person appointments and says it accepts more than 360 insurance plans. Many insured customers pay $0–$55 per session, although the amount is determined by the policy and provider.
Current listed self-pay talk-therapy prices are $200–$240 for the first session and $160–$195 for follow-ups, with state-specific variation. Thriveworks sends online clients a secure video link by email.
Its pricing pages have displayed conflicting ranges, so use the state-by-state table and the individual provider profile as the practical source of truth. Confirm the exact intake and follow-up price before payment.
8. Online-Therapy.com: best for structured CBT-based care
Online-Therapy.com is built around an eight-section cognitive behavioral therapy program. The service includes worksheets, journaling, activities, and therapist support rather than functioning like a conventional open-ended therapy directory.
Listed plans are:
- $48 per week: basic plan without live sessions.
- $72 per week: one 45-minute live session per week.
- $96 per week: two 45-minute live sessions per week.
- $96 per week: couples therapy.
The displayed lower prices include a first-month discount, and plans are billed monthly. You can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel online. This option is strongest for someone who wants a guided CBT curriculum and can work independently between therapist contacts. It is not an insurance-first service.
9. Doctor On Demand by Included Health: best for conventional per-visit teletherapy
Doctor On Demand is useful if you prefer to schedule and pay for individual video visits instead of joining a recurring therapy subscription. Without insurance, therapy starts at $134 for a 25-minute consultation or $184 for a 50-minute consultation.
Self-pay psychiatry starts at $299 for a 45-minute initial consultation, followed by $129 for 15-minute follow-ups. Insurance and employer costs vary. The service displays the applicable price after you register and enter your insurance information.
In the app, the current route for adding insurance is gear icon → Insurance or Employer. Because session lengths differ substantially from other services, compare the total minutes—not just the appointment price.

10. Sesame: best cash-pay marketplace
Sesame is a marketplace of independently owned provider practices, not one centralized therapy clinic. You search by specialty, condition, or provider, select an available time and listed price, pay upfront, and complete a medical-history form.
It does not require insurance, which makes it useful for people with high deductibles, no coverage, or a preference for transparent cash payment. Exact prices and appointment availability vary by provider. Costco members currently receive a $79 virtual therapy price through the member program.
Sesame can be simpler than submitting an insurance claim, but check whether the clinician offers ongoing appointments. A low-cost first visit is not especially useful if follow-up times are unavailable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right service
1. Check insurance before comparing subscription prices
Enter your plan details where the service supports eligibility checking, then call the insurer using the number on your insurance card. Ask four specific questions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Is this exact therapist or practice in network?
- What is my copay or coinsurance for outpatient behavioral-health visits?
- Does my deductible apply before the copay?
- Are video therapy and in-person therapy processed under the same benefit?
An eligibility check is not a final bill. It may not account for a remaining deductible, out-of-network processing, coinsurance, provider-specific exceptions, or a claim that is later adjusted.
2. Decide whether you want a marketplace or a matching service
Grow Therapy and Headway are better suited to browsing or comparing provider profiles. Rula and Talkspace primarily match users, although they provide ways to change providers. Choose a marketplace when therapist identity, specialty, and treatment approach are especially important to you.
3. Compare the actual session length
A “weekly session” can mean 25, 30, 45, 50, or 55 minutes. Talkspace includes 30-minute video sessions, Brightside describes typical 45-minute sessions, Online-Therapy.com offers 45-minute sessions, and Doctor On Demand lists both 25- and 50-minute visits. Divide the price by the included minutes before deciding that one plan is cheaper.
4. Separate therapy, psychiatry, and crisis care
Therapists generally do not prescribe medication. Medication evaluation and prescription management require a psychiatrist, physician, or authorized nurse practitioner and follow state and federal rules. These services may be priced separately.

Online therapy is also not an emergency service. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911, go to the nearest emergency department, or call or text 988 in the United States.
5. Check location and privacy requirements
For teletherapy, the relevant location is usually where the patient is physically located during the appointment. A clinician must generally be licensed or legally authorized in that state. Traveling across state lines can make a scheduled visit unavailable or legally impermissible.
Use a private room, headphones, a personal device, strong passwords, multifactor authentication, current operating-system updates, and private Wi-Fi. “HIPAA-compliant” does not mean that every website component, analytics tool, or tracking technology carries zero privacy risk.
Common claims that do not hold up
- “Every online therapy platform accepts insurance.” BetterHelp has limited insurance availability, Online-Therapy.com is structured as self-pay, and Sesame is a cash-pay marketplace.
- “Online therapy is always cheaper.” Cash-pay virtual visits can cost $134–$240 or more, depending on provider and session length.
- “National availability means every therapist serves every state.” Licensure, provider contracts, state rules, and appointment availability still apply.
- “HIPAA protects the entire website automatically.” Privacy protections depend on the service, the covered healthcare interaction, tracking practices, and how you use your own device.
- “A therapy plan includes prescriptions.” Medication care normally requires a separate psychiatric service and an appropriately authorized prescriber.
FAQ
Which online therapy service is best if I have insurance?
Start with Grow Therapy, Rula, Headway, Talkspace, Brightside, Thriveworks, or Doctor On Demand, then verify the exact therapist and plan with your insurer. Headway is especially insurance-first, while Grow Therapy emphasizes filtering and comparing individual providers.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What is the cheapest online therapy option?
There is no universal cheapest option. Insurance may reduce a session to a small copay, while cash prices vary by session length and provider. Online-Therapy.com lists a $48-per-week basic plan without live sessions, and Sesame advertises a $79 virtual therapy price for eligible Costco members.
Can online therapists prescribe medication?
Usually not. Prescribing generally requires a psychiatrist, physician, or authorized nurse practitioner. Look for a psychiatry or combined-care plan rather than assuming a standard therapy subscription includes prescriptions.
Is online therapy suitable for an emergency?
No. Online therapy platforms are not emergency services. In the United States, call 911, go to the nearest emergency department, or call or text 988 if there is an immediate safety risk.
The Bottom Line
For insurance-based care, compare Grow Therapy, Rula, and Headway first. Talkspace and BetterHelp are more convenient when you want recurring plans and messaging, while Brightside is a stronger fit for combined therapy and medication care. Choose Online-Therapy.com for a structured CBT program, Doctor On Demand for per-visit scheduling, and Sesame for cash-pay marketplace shopping.
