Chrome Music Lab is not a newly released app or browser extension. Google’s music-learning website launched in March 2016, and its Song Maker experiment followed in February 2018. The service remains available at musiclab.chromeexperiments.com, where you can open interactive experiments and make music directly in a browser. Google’s Chrome Music Lab listing and Song Maker listing give those launch dates.

Google describes Chrome Music Lab as a collection of “fun, hands-on experiments” for learning music. The most immediately useful option for creating a tune is Song Maker, which Google describes as “a simple way to make and share a song.”

What Chrome Music Lab actually is

Chrome Music Lab is a website, not a downloadable Chrome extension, standalone desktop program, or mobile app. Open the official site in a browser, choose an experiment, and start interacting with it. Google’s FAQ says that you do not need to create an account.

The project is designed to make musical ideas visible and interactive. Instead of beginning with conventional notation or a full digital audio workstation, you experiment with visual grids, patterns, rhythm, melody, sound, and other musical concepts.

Song Maker: the practical starting point

Song Maker is the Chrome Music Lab experiment most people will want when they are looking for a simple browser-based sequencer. Its grid-based interface lets you build a song by placing musical notes and rhythm elements, then listen to the result as it plays.

To open it directly:

  1. Go to musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/Song-Maker.
  2. Alternatively, open the main Chrome Music Lab site and follow its Song Maker link, or use Google’s short link: g.co/songmaker.
  3. Click or tap in the musical grid to create a pattern.
  4. Play the result, revise the pattern, and use the experiment’s sharing option if you want to send the song to someone else.

Google’s official listing calls the control Launch experiment. In Google’s Experiments for Learning collection, the corresponding button is labeled Launch Song Maker.

The exact labels and controls for tempo, instruments, grid size, undo and redo, saving, and sharing are not consistently exposed in the current official page text. For that reason, it is safer to describe Song Maker as a browser-based composition and sharing experiment rather than promise particular export formats or fixed limits. The current official pages do not establish that it exports MP3, WAV, or MIDI files.

Which devices and browsers work?

Google says Chrome Music Lab experiments can be used on phones, tablets, and laptops through a web browser such as Chrome. That does not mean every browser and device combination is guaranteed to work.

The current site displays this warning when required browser capabilities are unavailable: “Unfortunately, your browser doesn’t support the technology that makes these experiments work. For the best experience, view it on Chrome.” The direct Song Maker page has a related message: “Oops, sorry for the tech trouble. For best experience, view in Chrome browser.”

  1. Open the page in the latest available version of Chrome.
  2. Use a regular browser tab rather than an embedded preview inside another app.
  3. Check that the device is not blocking audio playback.
  4. Reload the page after switching browsers or networks.
  5. Try a laptop if the experiment is difficult to use on a small phone screen.

These steps address browser and playback problems; they do not guarantee that an unsupported device or browser will run every experiment.

Does it require a Google account?

No. Chrome Music Lab’s official FAQ answers the question directly: “Do I need to make an account? Nope. Just open any experiment and start playing.” That makes it convenient for a quick classroom demonstration or an informal experiment on a shared computer.

What technology powers it?

Google identifies the Web Audio API, WebMIDI, and Tone.js among the web technologies used by Chrome Music Lab. The broader project listing also names technologies such as WebGL, Pixi.js, and WebRTC across the project.

In practical terms, this explains why the experience runs in a browser but still needs modern browser capabilities. It is not simply a collection of static audio files: the page uses browser technology to respond to interaction and generate or control sound.

Is the source code available?

Google has published source code for many Chrome Music Lab experiments in the googlecreativelab/chrome-music-lab repository. However, the repository was archived by its owner on April 19, 2026 and is now read-only.

That status means the published repository is no longer actively maintained there. It does not, by itself, prove that the hosted experiments have been discontinued. The live website and the source repository should therefore be treated as separate things.

Are there commands to use Chrome Music Lab?

No command-line syntax is needed for normal use. Chrome Music Lab is browser software: open the URL and interact with the page.

The archived repository does contain developer build instructions for the separate Melody Maker source. Its README lists npm install and webpack -p. Those are build commands for working with source code, not commands that launch or control the public Chrome Music Lab website.

FAQ

Is Chrome Music Lab free?

The official site provides the experiments as browser-based web experiences and does not require an account. Open the site and start using an experiment.

Can I use Chrome Music Lab on a phone?

Yes. Google lists phones, tablets, and laptops as supported device categories, subject to browser technology support and the experiment working correctly on that device.

Why does Song Maker show a browser error?

The current Song Maker page recommends viewing it in Chrome when its required browser technology is unavailable. Try Chrome, reload the page, check audio playback, and avoid using an embedded browser inside another app.

Does Song Maker save songs as MP3 or MIDI?

That is not established by the current official pages. They describe Song Maker as a simple way to make and share a song, but do not currently verify MP3, WAV, or MIDI export.

When was Chrome Music Lab released?

Google’s Experiments listing dates Chrome Music Lab to March 2016. The Song Maker listing dates that experiment to February 2018.

The Bottom Line

Chrome Music Lab is a low-friction way to explore music in a browser, with Song Maker providing the clearest route from an empty grid to a shareable musical idea. Open it without an account on a phone, tablet, or laptop, preferably in Chrome. Just keep expectations realistic: it is an educational and experimental web project, not a full music-production suite, and the current official information does not verify common claims about downloadable audio or MIDI exports.
