To change when Windows 11 turns off your screen or puts your PC to sleep, open Settings > System > Power & battery and expand Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Set the screen-off and sleep timers separately, choosing battery and plugged-in values where available. To change what closing a laptop lid or pressing its power button does, use Control Panel’s Power Options.
Change the screen-off and sleep timers in Settings
- Open Start and select Settings. You can also press Windows key + I.
- Select System in the left sidebar.
- Open Power & battery.
- Expand Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Menu visibility and labels can vary by hardware and Windows version.
- Set Turn my screen off after to choose when the display turns off during inactivity.
- Set Make my device sleep after to choose when the device goes to sleep during inactivity.
- Choose the settings for On battery power and When plugged in separately where both choices are available.
The screen-off and sleep timers are independent. For example, the display can turn off before the PC enters sleep. Microsoft says sleep uses very little power and lets the PC resume quickly to where you left off.

What each option does
| Setting | Effect |
|---|---|
| Turn my screen off after | Turns off the display after the PC has been idle for the selected period. Windows can continue running. |
| Make my device sleep after | Places the PC into sleep after the selected period of inactivity. Sleep uses very little power and resumes quickly. |
Set different values for battery and plugged-in power
Where Windows exposes both, you can choose separate timers for On battery power and When plugged in. Shorter idle timers can help reduce power use when they suit your needs. Desktop PCs generally do not have a battery power state.
Windows also has other battery-related controls, including Power mode and Energy saver. These are separate from the sleep timer: changing them does not itself set when the device enters sleep.
#1 Best Overall
Put Windows 11 to sleep immediately
To sleep the PC without waiting for its timer:
- Open Start.
- Select the Power button.
- Select Sleep, if available.
If Sleep is missing, the device, firmware, driver configuration, or an organization’s policy may not expose that command. The available sleep states can be checked from Command Prompt.
Change what closing the laptop lid or pressing the power button does
These actions are configured in Control Panel’s Power Options, separately from the idle sleep timer.
Choose what closing the lid does
- Search for Control Panel and open it.
- Select System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- Choose the action for On battery and Plugged in, as available.
- Select Save changes.
Many laptops sleep when their lids close, but the available actions depend on the PC.
Choose what the power button does
- In Control Panel, open System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what the power buttons do.
- If needed, select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Choose the action for the power button and select Save changes.
Hibernate may be available as an action on some PCs. It uses less power than sleep but resumes more slowly, and it is not available on every PC. If Windows offers it, you may be able to enable it in Power Options under Shutdown settings.
Change sleep settings with Command Prompt
The powercfg command changes the active power scheme. Timeout values are specified in minutes. Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run the command that matches your requirement.
Display timeout commands
powercfg /change monitor-timeout-ac 5
powercfg /change monitor-timeout-dc 5
The first command sets the display timeout to five minutes when plugged in. The second sets it to five minutes on battery power.
System sleep timeout commands
powercfg /change standby-timeout-ac 15
powercfg /change standby-timeout-dc 10
These commands set sleep to 15 minutes while plugged in and 10 minutes on battery power.
/change modifies the currently active power plan. A value of 0 is commonly used to request no timeout, but managed computers or device-specific policies may override that behavior. Use Settings to verify the result.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

To identify the active scheme, run:

To display the settings in the current scheme, run:
powercfg /query
When changing the timeout does not work
The screen turns off, but the PC stays awake
Check the two timers separately. A shorter screen timeout is expected to turn off the display while the PC remains active. Adjust Make my device sleep after if you want the computer to sleep sooner or later.
The PC refuses to turn off the display or sleep
An application or driver may be issuing a power request. Open Command Prompt and run:
powercfg /requests
Review the DISPLAY and SYSTEM sections for programs or drivers preventing automatic display power-off or sleep.
The computer wakes immediately
Find the source of the last wake event:
powercfg /lastwake
To list scheduled wake events, run:
powercfg /waketimers
A network adapter, USB device, maintenance task, or scheduled update can wake the PC. Device and firmware settings may also affect wake behavior.
Sleep is missing or unavailable
Run:
powercfg /availablesleepstates
This reports which sleep states the system supports. Hardware, firmware, drivers, or organizational policy can affect which options are available.
The screen does not return after sleep
Disconnect and reconnect the affected monitor or dock, then restart the PC. Install current graphics, chipset, and dock drivers. If the problem occurs only with an external display, test the monitor and cable separately.
Check Presence Sensing settings
Some Windows 11 PCs support presence sensing, which can turn off the screen when you leave and wake the device when you approach. On supported hardware, open Settings > System > Power & battery and look for presence-sensing options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDepending on the device, settings may include how far away you must be, how long Windows waits before turning off the screen, and whether the behavior applies to an external display. These options are device-dependent and may be restricted by hardware, firmware, or organizational policy.

| Consideration | What to choose |
|---|---|
| Device is on battery | Consider shorter screen-off and sleep timers if reducing idle power use is the priority. |
| Device is plugged in | Choose timers that balance power use with how long you want the PC ready without interaction. |
| Want a quick return | Sleep resumes faster than hibernate, according to Microsoft Support. |
| Want lower power use while inactive | Hibernate uses less power than sleep but resumes more slowly; it may not be available on your PC. |
| Need the screen on longer | Set the screen-off timer separately from the sleep timer so the display and PC do not have to time out together. |
Available settings and behavior vary by hardware and manufacturer.
