To add a shortcut for a website, open it in Chrome, select More > Cast, save and share > Create shortcut, then choose a name and select Create. If you mean an installed web app or a Chrome icon on the Windows taskbar, use the separate steps below.
Google’s Chrome Help documents the website-shortcut route. Menu labels can vary by Chrome version or language, so look for Create shortcut under Cast, save and share.
Create a desktop shortcut for a website
- Open Chrome and go to the website you want the shortcut to open.
- Select More (the three-dot menu).
- Select Cast, save and share, then Create shortcut.
- Keep the suggested name or enter a different one.
- Select Create.
This creates a shortcut to the website. Google’s Chrome Help describes the feature as a way to create shortcuts to favourite websites from Chrome.
Create a shortcut for an installed web app
An installed web app is different from a plain website shortcut. To create a shortcut for an app that is already installed in Chrome:

- Enter chrome://apps in Chrome’s address bar and press Enter.
- Right-click the installed app.
- Select Create shortcut.
- Choose where you want the shortcut to appear, such as the desktop or a menu.
- Select Create.
If you want to install an eligible website as an app first, open the site and select More > Cast, save and share > Install page as app. Some sites also show an Install icon in the address bar. Installing a site as an app and creating a plain website shortcut are separate choices.
Pin Chrome to the Windows taskbar
A taskbar pin is not a desktop shortcut; it places Chrome on the Windows taskbar for quick access.

- To pin an open Chrome window, right-click Chrome’s icon on the taskbar and select Pin to taskbar.
- Alternatively, open Start, find Chrome, right-click it, and select Pin to taskbar.

What about the old Chrome Apps instructions?
Do not use the old Chrome Web Store Apps route as a way to install Chrome Apps on Windows. Chrome Web Store Help says those apps stopped working on Windows, Mac, and Linux after December 2022. For a website icon, use Chrome’s current Create shortcut option; for an app-like experience, install an eligible site as a web app.

Open chrome://apps, right-click the installed app, select Create shortcut, choose a location, and select Create.
How do I put Chrome on the Windows taskbar?

Is a website shortcut the same as installing a web app?
No. A website shortcut opens a website in Chrome. Installing a web app gives an eligible site an app-like installation, and you can create a separate shortcut for an installed app through chrome://apps.
Can I use the old Chrome Web Store Apps instructions on Windows?
No. Chrome Web Store Help says Chrome Apps stopped working on Windows, Mac, and Linux after December 2022. Use Chrome’s current website-shortcut or web-app options instead.
