To add Google Chrome to your Windows desktop, open Start > All, find Google Chrome, and drag it onto the desktop. Windows creates a shortcut to the installed app; it does not install Chrome again. If dragging does not work, use the installed-apps folder method below.
Method 1: Drag Chrome from Start
- Open Start.
- Select All or All apps, depending on your Windows version.
- Find Google Chrome in the installed-app list.
- Drag Google Chrome onto an empty area of the desktop.
- Release the mouse button to create the shortcut.

Method 2: Create the shortcut from the installed-apps folder
- Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter shell:AppsFolder and press Enter.
- Find Google Chrome in the Applications folder.
- Open Chrome’s context menu and select Create shortcut.
- When prompted, confirm that Windows should place the shortcut on the desktop.
This provides another way to create a desktop shortcut to an app registered with Windows. [Microsoft Support]
Use the desktop shortcut wizard
Windows also provides a general shortcut wizard for a file, folder, or web page. For an installed app such as Chrome, the Start-menu method is the simplest documented route.

- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Select New > Shortcut.
- Follow the prompts to provide the shortcut’s location and name.
Create a desktop shortcut for a website in Chrome
This creates an icon for a particular website, not a shortcut to the Chrome app itself.
- Open the website in Chrome.
- Select More (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Cast, save, and share > Create shortcut.
- Optionally change the shortcut name.
- Select Create.
The shortcut opens that website in Chrome. [Google Chrome Help]

Pin Chrome to the taskbar
A taskbar pin is separate from a desktop shortcut. To pin Chrome to the taskbar:
- Open Chrome.
- Right-click its icon on the taskbar.
- Select Pin to taskbar.

Does a Chrome website shortcut open the browser or a specific site?
The Chrome Create shortcut menu flow creates a shortcut for the website currently open in Chrome. To add Chrome itself, use the Windows Start app list or the installed-apps folder.
Does pinning Chrome to the taskbar create a desktop shortcut?
No. Pinning places Chrome on the taskbar. To create a desktop icon, use the Start-menu drag method or the installed-apps folder method.
