Office activation in Windows 11 depends on the license installed on the computer. Microsoft 365 normally activates when you sign in with the account that owns the subscription. Retail copies of Office 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016 usually use the Microsoft account linked to the purchase, while a newly purchased key must first be redeemed online.
Before troubleshooting, check whether you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, a one-time purchase, a preinstalled trial, a Workplace Discount Program copy, or an organization-managed volume license. The steps are different for each one.
Activate Office by signing in
This is the normal method for Microsoft 365 and most retail copies of Office 2024, Office 2021, Office 2019, and Office 2016.
- Connect the Windows 11 PC to the internet.
- Open Word, Excel, or another installed Office application.
- Open an existing document or select Blank document.
- Select File > Account. In Classic Outlook, this may be File > Office Account.
- Select Sign In.
- Enter the Microsoft account or work/school account that owns the Office license.
- Complete the password, multifactor-authentication, and license prompts.
- Accept the Microsoft Software License Terms if Microsoft displays them.
- Close and reopen the Office application.
The account must be the one used to purchase the subscription or Office license. For an organization-managed installation, your administrator must have assigned your work or school account a license that includes the desktop Office apps.

Check which account activated Office
Open a document and select File > Account. Under the product name, check the account shown beside Belongs to. If it is not the account that purchased or received Office, sign out and sign in with the correct account.
Confirm that activation worked
On File > Account, the product information should show your licensed Office product. It should not display Unlicensed Product, Product Deactivated, or a persistent activation warning. If Office remains unlicensed, editing features may eventually be disabled.
Redeem a new Office product key
Use this method for a new retail key card or a newly purchased Microsoft 365 or Office key. A 25-character key normally needs to be redeemed only once. Redemption links the license to a Microsoft account, which becomes the usual way to reinstall and activate Office later.
- Open a browser and go to office.com/setup or microsoft365.com/setup.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account, or create one.
- Enter the key in this format: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.
- Follow the instructions to complete redemption.
- Open the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page and select Install if Office is not already installed.
- Open Word or Excel and sign in with the same account used during redemption.
Do not keep entering the key every time you reinstall Office. After redemption, sign in at the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page and install the product listed there.

Microsoft 365 subscriptions are normally activated by account sign-in rather than by repeatedly entering a key. A key may still be needed when redeeming a new subscription, renewing with a retail key card, or activating certain Workplace Discount Program products.
Activate Office preinstalled on a new Windows 11 PC
A Word or Excel shortcut in the Start menu does not prove that the PC includes a permanent Office license. Manufacturers commonly preinstall the applications with a trial, a one-year subscription, or a one-time-purchase license.
Open Word or Excel and follow the setup screen:
- “Let’s get started”: the PC may contain a trial or an unactivated installation. The choices can include starting a Microsoft 365 Family trial, buying Microsoft 365, buying a non-subscription Office product, entering a key, or installing an Office license you already own.
- Paid Office included with the PC: some manufacturers transmit a digital product key during Windows setup. There may be no printed key. Sign in when prompted and Microsoft will associate the license with your account.
If activation repeatedly returns to Let’s get started, reinstall Office from the account used during setup:
- Close every Office application.
- Open the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page.
- Locate the Office product.
- Select Install, choose the installation options, and select Install again.
- After installation, open Word or Excel and sign in.
Use a Workplace Discount Program key
Office Professional Plus, Visio Professional, and Project Professional purchased through Microsoft’s Workplace Discount Program can use a different activation screen.

- At Sign in to set up Microsoft 365, select I don’t want to sign in or create an account.
- Enter the Workplace Discount Program product key.
- Complete the activation prompts.
If the Microsoft Office Activation Wizard appears
Follow the wizard’s instructions. It may ask you to sign in with the licensed account, enter a key, confirm the license, or connect to the internet.
The Office Activation Wizard does not indicate a Windows activation problem. Windows 11 and Office have separate licenses and activation systems. Activating Windows does not activate Office.

Troubleshoot Office activation problems
1. Check the licensed account
Go to File > Account and inspect Belongs to. Signing in with a personal account when the license belongs to a work account—or using the wrong personal account—is a common cause of Unlicensed Product.
For work or school Office, ask the administrator to confirm that your account has a Microsoft 365 license including the desktop Office applications.
2. Update Office
In Word or Excel, select File > Account > Product Information > Update Options > Update Now.
If Update Options is missing and only About appears, the installation may be volume licensed or controlled by Group Policy. Use Microsoft Update or contact your organization’s administrator.
3. Correct Windows date and time
An incorrect clock or time zone can interfere with license verification.
- Close all Office applications.
- Select the clock on the Windows taskbar.
- Select Date and time settings.
- Turn on Set time automatically.
- Turn on Set time zone automatically, if available.
- Restart Office and try again.
4. Run Office as administrator
- Close Office.
- Select Start and type Word.
- Right-click Word and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Try the activation process again.
This can resolve a permissions problem, but it does not create a license or bypass activation.
5. Run Microsoft’s activation troubleshooter
Microsoft’s activation troubleshooter runs through the Windows Get Help application. Start it from Microsoft Support, select Open if Windows asks to open Get Help, and follow the prompts. Run the troubleshooter on the same Windows 11 PC where Office is installed.
6. Remove a conflicting Office installation
A previous Office version, a different Microsoft 365 plan, or a mixture of retail and volume-license editions can cause Account Notice, Unlicensed Product, and activation errors.
Uninstall the conflicting edition, restart Windows, and install the edition associated with your current license. Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter supports Microsoft 365, Office 2021, Office 2019, and Office 2016. Microsoft currently notes that it cannot uninstall Office 2024.
7. Deactivate an unused Microsoft 365 device
Microsoft 365 normally allows activation on up to five PCs or Macs per user. If the limit has been reached:

- Open the relevant Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page.
- Find the Office installation.
- Select Deactivate for a computer you no longer use.
- Sign in again on the Windows 11 PC.
Deactivation does not uninstall Office. It removes the active license state from that device.
Understand product-key errors
| Error | Meaning and recommended action |

| This product cannot be activated because the product key is not valid | The key may have been blocked because it was stolen, abused, unauthorized, or fraudulently obtained. Request a refund from the seller and buy from Microsoft or an authorized retailer. |
| This product key isn’t meant for your region | The key does not match the country or region where it was sold. Contact the seller or obtain a key for the correct region. |
| Missing key on a new PC | A paid preinstalled license may use a digital key transmitted during setup. A trial installation normally has no permanent key to retrieve. |
A cheap standalone key can activate once and later be blocked. Repeating activation commands will not unblock a blocked key.
Change a retail or volume Office key from Command Prompt
This advanced procedure is mainly for Office 2016 and Office 2019 retail, MAK, and volume-license installations. It is not the normal activation method for a personal Microsoft 365 subscription.
Open Command Prompt as administrator. First check the installed key, then remove it using the last five characters reported by /dstatus, and install the replacement key.

After changing the key, open Word and select Next when prompted to activate over the internet. If Command Prompt reports Input Error: Can not find script file, the path does not match the installed Office architecture. Check both Program Files and Program Files (x86).
Do not use slmgr.vbs for retail Office. That is the Windows Software License Manager. Office uses Office-specific tools such as ospp.vbs for supported volume and key-management scenarios.
Office activation on workplace computers
Volume-license Office is managed by the organization rather than activated like a personal subscription. The supported methods include:
- KMS: Office contacts the organization’s Key Management Service host.
- MAK: Each installation activates against Microsoft’s activation services.
- Active Directory-based activation: Domain-joined computers activate through Active Directory.
For KMS or Active Directory activation, do not install a retail key unless instructed by IT. The administrator may need to configure DNS, Group Policy, a KMS host, an Office Volume License Pack, or an activation object.
Check shared computer activation
On a shared workplace PC running Microsoft 365 Apps, open Word and select File > Account > About Word. The second line under the MSO version should show Shared Computer Activation rather than a normal Product ID.
Administrators can also check this registry path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\Configuration.

The value SharedComputerLicensing should be set to 1. Shared computer activation requires a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan; Microsoft 365 Business Premium supports it, while Business Standard does not.
Office 2016 and Office 2019 support status
Office 2016 and Office 2019 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. A valid license may still activate, but those versions no longer receive normal security updates, bug fixes, or technical support. If you are setting up a new PC, use Microsoft 365 or a supported Office release where possible.
FAQ
Does activating Windows 11 activate Microsoft Office?
No. Windows 11 and Office use separate licenses. Activating Windows does not activate Office, and activating Office does not activate Windows.
Do I need the Office product key every time I reinstall it?
Usually not. After a retail Office or Microsoft 365 key is redeemed, the license is linked to your Microsoft account. Sign in to the account’s Services & subscriptions page to reinstall and activate Office.

The PC may contain only a trial or an unactivated preinstallation. It can also mean Office was installed under a different Microsoft account. Check Services & subscriptions, reinstall the listed Office product, and sign in with that account.
Can I activate Office without signing in?
Most Microsoft 365 and retail Office installations require the licensed account. Certain Workplace Discount Program products allow you to choose “I don’t want to sign in or create an account” and enter the supplied key.
Why does Office say the product key is invalid?
Microsoft may have blocked the key because it was stolen, abused, unauthorized, or fraudulently obtained. Contact the seller for a refund and purchase from Microsoft or an authorized retailer.

For most Windows 11 users, activation is simply Word or Excel > File > Account > Sign In using the Microsoft account that owns Office. Redeem a new key first at office.com/setup. If the account is correct but activation still fails, check the Windows clock, update Office, remove conflicting installations, or use Microsoft’s Get Help activation troubleshooter. Workplace and volume-license installations should be handled using the organization’s assigned account or IT activation system.
