If Xbox party chat cannot hear your microphone on Windows 11, first check that the headset is connected and unmuted, then verify that Windows detects the intended microphone. Next, check Windows microphone permissions and input settings; these steps help determine whether the problem is with the device or Windows access rather than the party-chat layer.
The steps below follow Microsoft’s general Windows microphone and audio guidance. They are not guaranteed Xbox-specific fixes. Make one change at a time and test the microphone again.
1. Check the headset and microphone connection
- Make sure the headset or microphone is firmly connected to the PC. For a wireless device, check that its receiver or Bluetooth connection is active.
- Check the headset’s physical mute switch or button and turn mute off.
- Open Settings → System → Sound and look under Input for the microphone you intend to use.
If Windows does not list the microphone, reconnect it and check its connection before changing other settings.
2. Test the microphone in Windows
- Open Settings → System → Sound.
- Under Input, select the intended microphone.
- Use the microphone’s input test and listen to the sample, if that option is available.
- If the input is too quiet, adjust the input volume and test again.
A successful Windows test shows that Windows receives microphone input, but does not establish that every Xbox party-chat setting or service is working.

- If the Xbox app appears with an individual access setting, allow it to use the microphone.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone if the app is operating as a desktop app.
Desktop apps may not appear in the individual app list. Windows settings labels or app interfaces can vary; if they differ on your PC, look for the equivalent microphone privacy controls.
4. If Windows does not detect the microphone
If the device is missing from Sound input or the input test receives no signal, check the connection and mute control again. Then follow Microsoft’s general microphone troubleshooting, including checking for audio-driver problems when Windows does not detect the device.

Driver troubleshooting is a later diagnostic step, not an Xbox-specific fix. Avoid uninstalling drivers as an initial response.
5. Try broader Windows audio troubleshooting
If the microphone is connected and selected but Windows audio still behaves incorrectly, Microsoft’s general audio guidance includes restarting Windows Audio, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, and Remote Procedure Call. Treat this as a broader Windows diagnostic, not a guaranteed solution for Xbox party chat.

6. Consider replacing hardware only after troubleshooting
If Windows still cannot detect the microphone after connection, permission, input, and relevant software checks, the headset or microphone may be faulty. Consider replacement only after those checks. Before choosing a device, verify that its connection type and microphone are compatible with your PC and the app you use, and review its return policy.
