Yes. You can call into a Microsoft Teams meeting from a mobile phone or landline, but only if the meeting invitation includes a dial-in phone number and a conference ID. You do not need the Teams app, a Microsoft account, or a Teams license to join as a phone participant.

If the invitation contains only a Teams link, Meeting ID, and passcode, you cannot use those details to place a normal phone call. The meeting organizer’s organization must have Microsoft Teams Audio Conferencing enabled.

How to tell whether a Teams meeting supports phone dial-in

Open the meeting invitation and look for a section similar to Join by phone, Dial-in, or Find a local number. It should contain:

  • A telephone number
  • A conference ID
  • Sometimes a Find a local number link for other countries or regions

The conference ID for phone access is different from the Teams Meeting ID and passcode. The Meeting ID and passcode are used in the Teams app or Teams web experience. A phone caller needs the dial-in number and conference ID.

  • Certified for Microsoft Teams ensures it’s easy to pick-up or answer Teams meetings, calls, messages, and notifications with a single press to the Teams button. Or apply a longer touch to invoke Cortana voice skills.

Dial-in details normally appear automatically when an organization has Audio Conferencing configured and a licensed organizer schedules the meeting in Teams or Outlook.

Call into a Teams meeting from any phone

  1. Open the Teams meeting invitation.
  2. Find the Dial-in phone number. Use Find a local number if the listed number is not suitable for your location.
  3. Call the number from your mobile phone or landline.
  4. When the automated system asks, enter the meeting’s conference ID, followed by # if prompted.
  5. Follow the remaining voice prompts.
  6. If Teams places you in the lobby, stay on the line until the organizer or a presenter admits you.

The dial-in number and conference ID are meeting-specific. Do not substitute the Meeting ID or passcode from the Teams link.

What you can do as a phone participant

Calling in gives you the meeting’s audio connection. You can hear other attendees and speak through your phone. You can also mute or unmute yourself and use supported keypad commands.

Your phone will not show slides, video, chat, reactions, or screen sharing. If you need to see shared content, join the same meeting through Teams on a computer, tablet, or another phone while using the first phone for audio. Avoid joining audio on both devices unless one device is muted, or you may create an echo.

Use Teams to call your phone

If you can open the Teams app but want to use your phone for audio, the meeting may offer a Call me option. The organizer’s Audio Conferencing and dial-out settings must support it.

Have Teams call another person into a live meeting

A Teams participant may be able to dial a phone number into an active meeting. This requires a phone number assigned to the caller’s Teams account and permission to make external calls.

  1. In the meeting controls, select People or Show participants.
  2. Enter the person’s full telephone number in Invite someone or dial a number.
  3. Select Add phone.
  4. Ask the recipient to answer and say “OK” or press 1 when prompted.

Microsoft recommends entering the number with its country or region code in E.164 format. For example, use the international country code rather than relying on a local dialing pattern.

When the organizer joins by phone

Teams may ask the meeting organizer for an Audio Conferencing PIN. This is separate from the conference ID used by attendees.

If the organizer has forgotten the PIN, they can select Reset dial-in PIN from the meeting invitation. Microsoft displays the new PIN only once after it is reset. If it is lost, reset it again.

Phone-only meetings can also be affected by the setting that controls whether unauthenticated callers may be the first people in a meeting. That setting is disabled by default according to Microsoft’s documentation. As a result, attendees who call before the organizer may remain in the lobby until the organizer starts or authenticates the meeting.

Why the dial-in number is missing

The most common reason is that Audio Conferencing has not been enabled for the organizer. Other possibilities include:

  • The organization has not purchased the required Audio Conferencing license.
  • The license was purchased but not assigned to the organizer.
  • PSTN conferencing is not enabled for meetings scheduled from Teams.
  • The organizer has not sent the invitation to at least one attendee.
  • A recent licensing or phone-number change has not finished propagating.

Microsoft says the organizer must send the invitation to at least one person before the Join link and dial-in information appear. After configuration changes, an assigned number can take up to 24 hours to appear on meeting invitations.

If you are an attendee, ask the organizer to check the invitation or contact the organization’s Teams administrator. You generally cannot add a dial-in number yourself.

Other common phone-join problems

You are stuck in the lobby

The organizer’s lobby policy controls whether you enter immediately. You may also be waiting because the organizer has not started or authenticated a phone-only meeting. Stay connected and ask the organizer to admit you.

You have a Meeting ID and passcode but no phone details

Those credentials are for joining through the Teams app or browser. Ask for the complete phone section of the invitation, including the telephone number and conference ID. If that section does not exist, the meeting may not support dial-in.

The number does not work from another country

Phone-number availability varies by country and region. Toll and toll-free numbers are not available everywhere. Use the meeting invitation’s Find a local number link rather than choosing a number from another meeting or an unrelated Microsoft page.

The Call me option is not available

The organizer may not have dial-out enabled, or the organization may restrict who can use it. Join by dialing the number manually if the invitation provides one, or ask the organizer to enable the appropriate Audio Conferencing option.

Voicemail joins the meeting

If Teams calls a phone number and voicemail answers, the voicemail system can sometimes enter the meeting. Administrators can require the recipient to confirm by pressing 1 or saying “Okay” before the call joins. The tenant setting is:

Does calling into Teams cost money?

The attendee does not need a Teams or Audio Conferencing license. However, the telephone call itself may incur charges, depending on your phone plan, the dial-in number, the country, and the organization’s Microsoft agreement.

Numbers may be toll or toll-free, and toll-free availability is limited by country and region. Microsoft’s pay-per-minute Audio Conferencing model can charge for inbound toll, inbound toll-free, and outbound meeting calls and may require Communications Credits. In the United States and Canada, Microsoft also advertises an Audio Conferencing option with unlimited toll dial-in minutes and 60 pooled dial-out minutes per user per month, subject to the applicable offer and agreement.

FAQ

Can I join a Teams meeting by phone without the Teams app?

Yes. If the invitation contains a dial-in number and conference ID, you can call from a mobile phone or landline without installing Teams or signing in with a Microsoft account.

Can I call into any Microsoft Teams meeting?

No. The organizer’s organization must have Audio Conferencing configured, and the invitation must include phone dial-in details.

Do I use the Teams Meeting ID to call in?

No. Phone callers use the dial-in telephone number and conference ID. The Teams Meeting ID and passcode are for joining through the app or web browser.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can phone participants see the Teams presentation?

No. Phone dial-in provides audio only. Join through Teams on another device to view video, slides, screen sharing, chat, and reactions.

Do attendees need a Teams license to dial in?

No. Attendees do not need a Teams account or Audio Conferencing license. The organization needs the relevant licensing and configuration for the meeting organizer.

Why am I waiting in the Teams lobby after calling?

The organizer’s lobby settings may require someone to admit you. You may also have called before the organizer started or authenticated a phone-only meeting.

The Bottom Line

You can call into a Teams meeting when the invitation includes both a dial-in phone number and conference ID. Call the listed number, enter the conference ID, and wait for admission if Teams places you in the lobby. You do not need the Teams app or a license as an attendee, but you will receive audio only. If no dial-in section appears, the organizer or Teams administrator must enable Audio Conferencing; a Meeting ID and passcode alone are not enough.
