Google Lens on a PC can identify objects, find similar images, locate webpages using a picture, read text, and search a selected part of a webpage. You can use it in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge for image uploads and image-URL searches. Chrome adds two more options: search an image from its context menu or inspect anything visible on the current tab.
The exact command names matter. The current Chrome menu uses Search with Google Lens for an image and Search this tab with Google Lens for page-wide visual searches. Older guides may show different labels.
1. Upload an image from your PC
This is the most direct method when the image is saved in Downloads, Pictures, or another folder on your computer.
- Open google.com in a desktop browser.
- Click Search by image.
- Select Upload a file.
- Choose the image on your PC.
- Click Open or Choose.
Google Lens processes the image and may show an AI Overview, object-related results, similar images, and webpages containing the same or a similar image. Depending on the picture, it can also expose an Add to your search box. Use that box to add context such as “black leather boots” or “translate this text.”

The upload workflow is not restricted to Chrome. Google currently lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge as compatible desktop browsers for visual search.
When this method is useful
- You downloaded a product photo and want to identify or compare it.
- You have a screenshot and need to find its source.
- You want to search a photo without first opening the page where it came from.
2. Drag and drop an image into Google
Dragging is quicker than navigating through the file picker when the image folder is already open.
- Open google.com in a desktop browser.
- Open File Explorer on Windows or Finder on macOS.
- Find the image file.
- Click and hold the image, then drag it into Google’s search box.
- Release the mouse button.
Google uploads the dropped file and opens the Lens results. You do not need to open Google Images first; this is a separate upload method supported from Google’s main search page.
If the drop does nothing, try the Search by image button and use Upload a file instead. Browser extensions, a page that has not finished loading, or dragging from an application that does not expose the original file can interfere with drag-and-drop.

3. Search with an image URL
Use this option when the image is already online and you do not want to download it.
- Open the webpage containing the image.
- Right-click the image.
- Select Copy Image Address.
- Go to google.com.
- Click Search by image.
- Paste the address into Paste image link.
- Click Search.
Be careful to copy the image address, not the address of the webpage around it. The browser command you need is specifically Copy Image Address. On some sites, a right-click may be disabled or the picture may be loaded through a protected viewer. In that case, save a screenshot or image copy and use the upload method.

Privacy detail for image URLs
Google says browsers do not save searched image URLs in browsing history. However, Google may store those URLs to improve its products. Avoid submitting a private or access-controlled image URL unless you are comfortable with that handling.
4. Search a webpage image from Chrome’s context menu
Chrome can send an image from the page directly to Google Lens without downloading it first. This method requires Chrome and Google must be Chrome’s default search engine.
- Open Chrome and visit the webpage containing the image.
- Right-click the image.
- Choose Search with Google Lens.
- Review the results in the sidebar.
The sidebar can show visually similar images, information about the subject, and pages connected with the image. Select a result if you want to open it in a new tab.
Do not look for older commands such as Search Google for this image or Search Image with Google Lens. Google’s current documented label is Search with Google Lens.
If the image option is missing
First check Chrome’s default search engine under More ⋮ → Settings → Search engine. Set it to Google, then reload the webpage. If the image is not a normal standalone image—for example, it is a video frame, canvas element, or part of a complex page—use the page-wide method below.
5. Select anything on the current Chrome tab
This is the most flexible PC method. It lets you search a region, text, an object, or a video frame even when there is no downloadable image.

- Open the webpage in Chrome.
- Click More ⋮ in the top-right corner.
- Choose Search this tab with Google Lens.
- Click an item, highlight text, or click and drag around the area you want to inspect.
- Review the results in Chrome’s side panel.
You can also right-click the page and choose Search this tab with Google Lens, when that command is available. Chrome may let you ask a question about the page in the Lens panel. Follow-up questions use the Ask a follow up bar and can lead to AI Mode.
To close the panel, press Esc, click Close in the panel, or select an area in the live page as directed by Chrome. Results stay in the side panel; clicking a result opens it in a new tab. Chrome can also pin Search this tab with Google Lens to the toolbar for easier access.

Which Google Lens method should you use?

What happens to the image and page data?
For Chrome’s webpage Lens feature, Google says Chrome sends a screenshot of the page and page data to Google for processing. When you select part of a page, that selection is sent to Google Search. Google says it does not retain the data beyond temporary storage for that specific query and does not use the page or image for training as a result.
Search activity can be managed or deleted through My Google Activity. Do not use Lens casually on confidential documents, customer information, medical records, or other material that you are not permitted to submit to an online service.
Why Google Lens may not find an exact match
Lens is a visual search tool, not a guarantee of a one-to-one reverse-image match. Results can include similar images and websites containing the same or similar image. Cropping, compression, watermarks, mirrored images, private pages, and images that have never been indexed can all affect the result.
For a better chance of finding the original source, crop away unrelated background, select the main object, and add a precise phrase in Add to your search. Try both the full image and a crop of the distinctive part.

Instructions that tell you to enable a Chrome flag named Search your screen with Google Lens are not the current documented procedure. For a webpage, use the built-in Search this tab with Google Lens command instead.

Do I need Chrome to use Google Lens on a PC?
No. Google currently supports image uploads and image-URL searches in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. Chrome is required for the documented webpage-image context-menu and current-tab Lens features.

What is the difference between Search with Google Lens and Search this tab with Google Lens?
Search with Google Lens searches a specific image from a Chrome webpage. Search this tab with Google Lens lets you select an object, text, video frame, or region anywhere on the current page.
Why does Google Lens show similar images instead of the original?
Google may not have indexed the original, or the image may have been cropped, compressed, mirrored, watermarked, or posted privately. Lens results can include similar images and sites with the same or a similar image.
Does Google save images searched with Lens?
For Chrome webpage searches, Google says the page screenshot and data are temporarily stored for that query and are not used to train models as a result. Image URLs may be stored to improve Google products. Search activity can be managed in My Google Activity.
