Google Authenticator runs on a phone, not as a documented native Windows app. To use it with a Windows 10 or 11 PC, set it up on your phone, then enter the current code from the app when the account’s sign-in page on your PC asks for it. Authenticator codes can be generated without internet or mobile service.

What you can and cannot do on Windows

Task How it works
Run Google Authenticator on Windows Google’s documented setup flow uses the mobile app; it does not describe a native Windows Authenticator app.
Use a Windows PC to sign in Open the account’s sign-in page in a browser or app and enter the code generated by Authenticator on your phone.
Use Authenticator for other services It can generate codes for other websites and apps that support Authenticator app 2-Step Verification. Setup steps vary by service.

Do not download unofficial apps that claim to be Google Authenticator for Windows. Google Account Help describes Authenticator as an app that generates one-time codes for supported services.

What you need before starting

  • A Windows PC with a browser, and a phone that can run Google Authenticator.
  • Access to the account you want to protect.
  • A recovery method offered by that account, such as backup codes or another sign-in method.

Google’s current documentation says Authenticator syncing requires Android version 6.0 or above, with platform and feature eligibility caveats. Check the app’s current requirements before relying on a particular feature.

Set up Google Authenticator for a Google Account

  1. Turn on 2-Step Verification. Open your Google Account security settings and enable 2-Step Verification if it is not already on.
  2. Open the setting on your Android phone. In the account’s 2-Step Verification settings, choose Set up authenticator. Some devices may show Get Started. You may be asked to sign in again.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts. Complete setup in Google Authenticator on the phone as directed.
  4. Sign in on your Windows PC. When Google asks for a second step, enter the current code shown in Authenticator.

Google says Authenticator may take up to seven days to become available as a Google Account sign-in option. This timing note is about Google Accounts, not a universal delay for third-party services.

Use Authenticator with other websites and apps

For a non-Google service, start in that service’s own security or two-step verification settings and follow its instructions to add an authenticator app. The service may provide a QR code or another setup method. Once enrolled, open the matching entry in Google Authenticator and enter its current code on the Windows sign-in page.

Keep access to your account

Before changing phones or relying on a single second step, confirm that another recovery method is available. Google recommends safeguards such as syncing or transferring codes and enrolling additional 2-Step Verification methods. Use only recovery options actually offered for your account.

Sync or transfer codes when changing phones

Google Authenticator can sync codes when you sign in to the app with a Google Account. Google says synced codes are encrypted in transit and at rest. Google also supports manual transfer from an old device to a new one. Follow the current in-app transfer instructions, and keep the old phone until you have confirmed that the codes work on the new device.

Use backup codes carefully

Google backup codes are single-use: after using one, it becomes inactive. Google lets users generate a fresh set of 10 backup codes, though some account programs, including Advanced Protection, restrict downloading them. Keep any backup codes private and store them securely.

Protect your codes

Never share a verification code with someone who contacts you. Google warns that scammers may try to take over accounts using these codes, and says it will not call users to ask for a code.

Other second-step options

Depending on your account and devices, Google may offer alternatives to Authenticator. Availability and recovery options vary by account.

Option What you need Important considerations
Passkey A supported device and browser; Google lists Windows 10 or later among supported passkey devices. A phone-held passkey can be used on a PC through a QR-code flow; Bluetooth should be on for that cross-device flow.
Google prompt A signed-in Android phone with Wi-Fi or cellular data. If the phone is unavailable or a prompt does not arrive, choose Try another way and use an option offered for the account.
Hardware security key A compatible FIDO security key. Google supports FIDO1 or FIDO2 keys as a second step; FIDO2 is required to create a passkey on a key. Keep a separate recovery method in case the key is lost.

Troubleshoot sign-in problems

  • A code is rejected: Check that you selected the entry for the correct service and account, then try the newest code.
  • Codes keep failing: Check that your phone’s date and time settings are correct. Google’s current Authenticator documentation says version 7.0 uses the operating system’s time setting and no longer has the old in-app time-correction control.
  • A Google prompt does not arrive: Check the phone’s internet connection, Do Not Disturb, Google Play services, and whether the intended account is signed in on the Android phone.
  • Your phone is unavailable: Select Try another way and choose a recovery method the account offers. If the phone is lost, review or remove access from the device when possible.
