Personal Hotspot on iOS 18 depends on three things working together: the iPhone’s cellular data connection, the carrier’s hotspot service, and the connection method used by the second device. Start with the quick checks below, then move to compatibility, USB/Bluetooth, and network-reset fixes.

Note: Depending on your carrier, region, SIM, and iPhone model, you may find the hotspot controls at Settings > Personal Hotspot or Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.

1. Turn on Cellular Data

Personal Hotspot shares the iPhone’s cellular data connection. It cannot connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and rebroadcast that Wi-Fi connection to another device.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular.
  3. Turn on Cellular Data.
  4. Turn off Wi-Fi on the iPhone and open a webpage in Safari.

If webpages do not load on the iPhone itself, Personal Hotspot will not provide internet access. Fix the cellular connection first. Apple also recommends checking that Cellular Data is enabled when Personal Hotspot is missing or dimmed.

Apple 60W USB-C to USB-C Woven Charge Cable (1 m): Fast and Convenient Charging
  • DESIGNED BY APPLE — Ideal for charging, syncing, and transferring data between USB-C devices, this 1-meter charge cable is made with a woven design and has USB-C connectors on both ends.
  • FAST AND CONVENIENT CHARGING — Supports charging of up to 60 watts and transfers data at USB 2 rates. Pair the USB-C Charge Cable with a compatible USB-C power adapter to conveniently charge your devices from a wall outlet and even take advantage of the fast-charging feature on select iPhone models.
  • WHAT’S IN THE BOX — Apple USB-C Woven Charge Cable only. Power adapter sold separately.
  • CABLE LENGTH — 1 meter (3 feet).

2. Check whether your carrier plan includes Personal Hotspot

Hotspot service is controlled by the carrier. A missing or unresponsive Personal Hotspot option may be an account restriction rather than an iOS problem.

Contact your carrier if:

  • Personal Hotspot is missing or dimmed.
  • You cannot turn the option on.
  • A device connects but has no internet access.
  • You recently changed your SIM, eSIM, plan, or data allowance.
  • Your plan has a separate hotspot limit or has reached its limit.

The maximum number of connected devices can also vary by carrier and iPhone model. Ask the carrier to confirm that tethering is enabled on your line.

3. Enable Allow Others to Join

Windows PCs, Android phones, guest devices, and Apple devices that are not using the same Apple Account normally need this switch enabled.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Personal Hotspot. If it is not listed, go to Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
  3. Turn on Allow Others to Join.

Devices using Instant Hotspot through the same Apple Account or Family Sharing can work without this switch in some situations. For a normal Wi-Fi connection, however, leave it on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Restart both devices

Restart the iPhone providing the connection and the device trying to join it. This can clear a temporary failure in cellular registration, Wi-Fi discovery, Bluetooth, or the tethering service.

  1. Restart the host iPhone.
  2. Restart the Mac, Windows PC, iPad, Android phone, or other client device.
  3. After both devices start, enable Personal Hotspot and try again.

5. Install available software updates

Outdated software on either device can cause compatibility problems.

To update the iPhone:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.
  4. Tap Download and Install if an update is available.

Also update the connecting device. Depending on what you are using, this means updating iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Windows, or the Apple Devices app or iTunes for Windows.

6. Check for a carrier-settings update

Carrier-settings updates can change the network configuration used for cellular connectivity and newer carrier features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or make sure cellular data works.
  2. Open Settings > General > About.
  3. Wait a few seconds for an update prompt.
  4. Tap Update or OK if prompted.

On the same About screen, tap the number next to Carrier to view the installed carrier-settings version.

7. Refresh the cellular connection with Airplane Mode

Airplane Mode forces the iPhone to disconnect and register with the mobile network again. It is useful when the phone shows weak service, SOS, No Service, or Searching.

  1. Open Control Center and tap Airplane Mode.
  2. Leave it on for at least 15 seconds.
  3. Tap Airplane Mode again to turn it off.
  4. Wait for the carrier name or cellular signal to return.
  5. Test Personal Hotspot.

8. Enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, then move the devices closer

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are used for hotspot discovery and Instant Hotspot connections. Turn on both radios on both devices and keep them within approximately 30 feet (10 meters), as specified in Apple’s iPhone User Guide.

  1. Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the iPhone.
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the connecting device.
  3. On the client device, open its Wi-Fi settings.
  4. Select the iPhone’s hotspot from the available networks.

If the devices are in different rooms or surrounded by interference, move them closer while testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Turn on Maximize Compatibility

Use this option when the hotspot appears but the other device cannot join, repeatedly disconnects, or reports that the network is incompatible.

  1. Open Settings > Personal Hotspot.
  2. Turn on Maximize Compatibility.
  3. Try joining the hotspot again.

On supported devices, this setting uses the 2.4 GHz band and WPA2 Personal rather than the normal higher-performance configuration. It can improve compatibility with older laptops, phones, and Wi-Fi adapters, but may reduce speed and Wi-Fi security.

10. Verify the hotspot name and password

The hotspot’s Wi-Fi name is the iPhone’s device name. Confirm that the second device is joining the correct network and using the current password.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the host iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot.
  2. Read the value next to Wi-Fi Password.
  3. On the client device, select the network matching the iPhone’s device name.
  4. Enter the password exactly as displayed.

Hotspot passwords must contain at least eight characters. For the widest compatibility, use English letters, numbers, and standard punctuation. Unusual Unicode characters can be rejected by some Windows PCs, Android devices, game consoles, and older Wi-Fi hardware.

To change the hotspot name, open Settings > General > About > Name.

11. Forget the hotspot and join it again

The client device may have cached an old password or an invalid configuration. Remove the saved network and reconnect.

On an iPhone or iPad connecting to the hotspot:

  1. Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap the More Info button next to the hotspot.
  3. Tap Forget This Network, then tap Forget.
  4. Return to Settings > Wi-Fi.
  5. Select the hotspot and enter the current password.

In iOS 18, the Forget This Network command may instead be available under Settings > Wi-Fi > Edit, in the list of known networks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Temporarily disable a VPN or network-security software

A VPN configuration that blocks local networking can interfere with device discovery and related connections. Test the hotspot with the VPN disconnected.

Apple 240W USB-C to USB-C Woven Charge Cable (2 m): Fast and Convenient Charging
  • DESIGNED BY APPLE — Ideal for charging, syncing, and transferring data between USB-C devices, this 2-meter charge cable is made with a woven design and has USB-C connectors on both ends.
  • FAST AND CONVENIENT CHARGING — Supports charging of up to 240 watts and transfers data at USB 2 rates. Pair the USB-C Charge Cable with a compatible USB-C power adapter to conveniently charge your devices from a wall outlet and even take advantage of the fast-charging feature on select iPhone and Mac models.
  • WHAT’S IN THE BOX — Apple USB-C Woven Charge Cable only. Power adapter sold separately.
  • CABLE LENGTH — 2 meters (6 feet).
  1. Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
  2. Disconnect or disable the VPN profile.
  3. If the VPN is controlled by an app, disconnect it from that app too.
  4. Try Personal Hotspot again.

If security software is installed on the connecting computer or phone, temporarily disable it only for the test. Re-enable it afterward. A VPN does not automatically block every hotspot, so this step is mainly useful for identifying a local-networking conflict.

13. Use USB or Bluetooth tethering

If Wi-Fi hotspot connections fail, use another connection method. USB is generally the most stable option for a computer.

USB connection

  1. On the iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot.
  2. Turn on Allow Others to Join.
  3. Connect the iPhone to the computer with a USB cable.
  4. Tap Trust if the iPhone displays “Trust This Computer?”.
  5. On a Mac, open System Settings > Network and check for iPhone USB.

If iPhone USB does not appear on a Mac, add it as a network service or toggle the service off and on. On Windows, install the current Apple Devices app or iTunes for Windows if the required Apple drivers are missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluetooth connection

  1. On the iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot and turn on Allow Others to Join.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth and leave that screen open.
  3. On the second device, open Bluetooth settings and select the iPhone.
  4. Check that the pairing codes match.
  5. Confirm pairing on both devices.

USB and Bluetooth will not fix a carrier restriction or a failed cellular data connection, but they can isolate a Wi-Fi-specific problem.

14. Reset Network Settings

Use this as a last resort because it removes saved network configuration from the iPhone.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  4. Tap Reset.
  5. Tap Reset Network Settings.
  6. Enter the iPhone passcode if asked.
  7. Confirm the reset.

This does not delete photos, apps, messages, or other personal files. It does remove saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, VPN settings, and APN settings. After the reset, reconnect to Wi-Fi and reconfigure any VPN, APN, or managed-network settings you need.

If your carrier specifically tells you to check the APN:

  1. Open Settings > Cellular.
  2. Tap Cellular Data Network.

APN viewing and editing is carrier-dependent, so the menu may be missing. If it is unavailable, ask the carrier for the correct settings or request that it reprovision hotspot service.

What not to assume

Claim What is actually true
“Allow Others to Join must always be on.” Ordinary Wi-Fi connections usually need it. Instant Hotspot between devices using the same Apple Account or Family Sharing can work without it.
“The iPhone can share a Wi-Fi network through Personal Hotspot.” Personal Hotspot shares cellular data; it does not rebroadcast a Wi-Fi connection the iPhone joined.
“Maximize Compatibility is always faster.” It can solve compatibility problems, but its 2.4 GHz and WPA2 configuration may be slower and less secure.
“Reset Network Settings erases the iPhone.” It removes network configuration. Erase All Content and Settings is the separate destructive command.
“Everyone can edit the APN.” APN access is controlled by the carrier or device administrator. Change it only when instructed.

Recommended troubleshooting order

For the shortest route to a fix, test in this order:

  1. Confirm cellular data works with Wi-Fi disabled.
  2. Confirm the carrier plan includes hotspot service.
  3. Enable Allow Others to Join.
  4. Restart both devices.
  5. Check for iOS and carrier-settings updates.
  6. Try Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, and Maximize Compatibility.
  7. Forget and rejoin the saved hotspot network.
  8. Test USB tethering.
  9. Reset Network Settings only if the earlier steps fail.

FAQ

Why is Personal Hotspot missing on my iPhone with iOS 18?

Turn on Cellular Data first, then check whether your carrier plan includes hotspot service. If the option is still missing or dimmed, contact the carrier. The menu may be under Settings or Settings > Cellular, depending on the carrier and iPhone configuration.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my device connect to the iPhone hotspot but have no internet?

Verify that cellular data works on the iPhone with Wi-Fi turned off. Then check your carrier plan, hotspot allowance, and cellular signal. Restart both devices and install any available carrier-settings update.

Should Maximize Compatibility be on or off?

Leave it off normally for the best performance. Turn it on when the hotspot is visible but an older or incompatible device cannot connect or keeps disconnecting. It uses 2.4 GHz and WPA2 Personal, which can reduce speed and security.

Will Reset Network Settings delete my iPhone data?

No. It does not delete photos, apps, messages, or other personal data. It removes saved Wi-Fi passwords, cellular configuration, VPN settings, and APN settings.

Can an iPhone share a Wi-Fi connection through Personal Hotspot?

No. Personal Hotspot shares the iPhone’s cellular data connection. It cannot use a Wi-Fi network that the iPhone joined and rebroadcast that network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Most iOS 18 hotspot failures come down to a disabled cellular connection, a carrier restriction, an old saved password, or a Wi-Fi compatibility issue. Confirm cellular data and carrier support first, then enable Allow Others to Join, restart both devices, and try Maximize Compatibility or USB tethering. Reserve Reset Network Settings for the end because it removes saved network configuration.
