The Chrome executable is not always stored in the same folder. On Windows, consumer installations commonly use your local user profile, while managed or all-users installations commonly use Program Files. On macOS, Chrome is inside the application bundle. On Linux, the location depends on the package and the command name.
Use the shortcut or command for your operating system below rather than assuming that one fixed path applies to every installation.
Chrome executable location on Windows
The most common per-user Chrome installation is:
%LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChromeApplicationchrome.exe
Expanded, this usually means:
C:Users<username>AppDataLocalGoogleChromeApplicationchrome.exe
An all-users installation commonly uses:
C:Program FilesGoogleChromeApplicationchrome.exe
Some 32-bit or redirected installations may instead be located at:
C:Program Files (x86)GoogleChromeApplicationchrome.exe
The executable is normally inside the Application folder. Do not use the Chrome profile folder as the program location:
#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
%LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChromeUser Data
That folder stores bookmarks, history, cookies, extensions, and profiles. It does not normally contain chrome.exe.
Find the exact Windows path through the Start menu
- Open Start.
- Search for Google Chrome.
- Right-click Google Chrome and choose Open file location.
- In the folder that opens, right-click the Google Chrome shortcut and select Properties.
- Read the path in the Target field. It points to the installed executable.
This is usually the most reliable method because the shortcut reflects whether Chrome was installed for one user or for all users. It also avoids guessing between Program Files and AppData.
Check from Command Prompt
Open Command Prompt and run:
where chrome
If Chrome’s installation directory is in your current PATH, Windows prints the executable location. However, an empty result does not prove Chrome is missing. Many normal Chrome installations are not added to PATH.
Check from PowerShell
In PowerShell, run:
Get-Command chrome.exe -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
This has the same limitation: it finds Chrome only when PowerShell can resolve the command through PATH or its normal command lookup.

Chrome Beta, Dev, Canary, Chrome for Testing, and Chromium can use separate data directories. For example, their profile roots may be:
| Channel | Typical user-data directory |
|---|---|
| Stable | %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChromeUser Data |
| Beta | %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChrome BetaUser Data |
| Dev | %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChrome DevUser Data |
| Canary | %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChrome SxSUser Data |
| Chrome for Testing | %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChrome for TestingUser Data |
These are profile and user-data locations, not guaranteed executable locations. A script should not assume that finding one of these folders tells it where the corresponding chrome.exe is installed.

Chrome executable location on macOS
For the normal system installation, the executable is:
/Applications/Google Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google Chrome
If Chrome was installed only for your user account, it may instead be at:

Google Chrome.app is an application bundle. The visible .app item is not the executable itself.
Expose the executable in Finder
- Open Finder and go to Applications, or open
~/Applicationsfor a user-only installation. - Control-click Google Chrome.app.
- Select Show Package Contents.
- Open Contents, then MacOS.
- The executable in that folder is named Google Chrome.
Launch Chrome from Terminal
For the standard system installation, run:
"/Applications/Google Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google Chrome"
The quotation marks are required because both the application name and executable name contain spaces. Without quoting, the shell interprets the path as several separate arguments.
Chrome’s macOS profile data is stored separately at:
~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome
This directory contains user data, not the normal Chrome executable.

Chrome executable location on Linux
Linux package names vary by distribution and installation method. Common Chrome or Chromium commands include:
| Browser or package | Common command |
|---|---|
| Google Chrome | google-chrome |
| Google Chrome Stable | google-chrome-stable |
| Chromium | chromium |
| Older Chromium packages | chromium-browser |
Use command -v to see the executable selected through your shell’s PATH:
command -v google-chrome
command -v google-chrome-stable
command -v chromium
command -v chromium-browser
Run the commands individually. A command that returns a path identifies an available executable; a blank result means that command is not installed or is not available through PATH.
Typical Linux profile directories include:
~/.config/google-chrome
~/.config/google-chrome-beta
~/.config/google-chrome-unstable
~/.config/chromium
As on Windows and macOS, these are data directories rather than the executable’s location.
How to tell the executable path from the profile path
If Chrome is already running, type this into the address bar:
chrome://version
Find Profile Path on the page. This identifies the active profile directory. Its parent is the user-data directory, but neither path is normally the location of the Chrome executable.
Rank #4
For example, a Windows profile path might resemble:
C:UsersAlexAppDataLocalGoogleChromeUser DataDefault
That tells you where the Default profile is stored. The executable is normally elsewhere, such as:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsC:UsersAlexAppDataLocalGoogleChromeApplicationchrome.exe
Why common Chrome path searches fail
You searched in %APPDATA%
%APPDATA% points to the roaming application-data directory. Standard Windows Chrome user data is normally under %LOCALAPPDATA%, and neither location is the normal executable directory. Searching only %APPDATA%GoogleChrome can therefore produce the wrong result.
You assumed Chrome is in Program Files
C:Program FilesGoogleChromeApplicationchrome.exe is common for an all-users installation, but many consumer installations are per-user and use %LOCALAPPDATA% instead.
where chrome returned nothing
The where command checks locations available through PATH. Chrome can be installed and launch normally even when its directory is not in PATH. Use the Start-menu shortcut’s Target field instead.
You found a version-numbered folder
Chrome updates can place files in changing versioned installation folders. For a shortcut, script, or automation task, use the current shortcut target rather than hard-coding an old version directory.

You are using a portable or unpacked copy
A portable or manually unpacked Chrome copy may be outside the normal Google directories. It may also have no Start-menu shortcut, registry entry, or PATH entry. In that case, search the folder where the archive or package was extracted for chrome.exe.

FAQ
What is the default location of chrome.exe on Windows?
For many per-user installations it is %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChromeApplicationchrome.exe. All-users installations commonly use C:Program FilesGoogleChromeApplicationchrome.exe.
Is Chrome’s User Data folder the same as its installation folder?
No. %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChromeUser Data stores profiles and browser data. The executable is normally in the separate Application folder.
Why does where chrome not find Chrome?
The command only searches locations available through the current PATH. Chrome may be installed outside PATH. Find the Start-menu shortcut, open its Properties, and read the Target field.
Recommended Free Tools
Where is Chrome on a Mac?
The standard executable is inside the application bundle at /Applications/Google Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google Chrome. Control-click the app in Finder and choose Show Package Contents to view it.
How do I find Chrome’s profile directory?
Open Chrome, enter chrome://version, and read Profile Path. This identifies profile data, not the Chrome executable.
The Bottom Line
On Windows, check the Chrome shortcut’s Properties and copy the Target path; this is more dependable than assuming Program Files or AppData. On macOS, open Google Chrome.app and go to Contents/MacOS. On Linux, use command -v with the installed Chrome or Chromium command. Keep the executable path separate from the profile or User Data directory.
