You can upgrade an activated Windows 11 Home installation to Pro without reinstalling Windows: buy the upgrade through Microsoft Store or enter a valid Windows 11 Pro product key. If the device already has a Pro digital license, the Activation troubleshooter may offer the upgrade. Check your edition and activation status first in Settings > System > Activation.
What Windows 11 Pro adds
Microsoft lists BitLocker Drive Encryption, Remote Desktop, and the ability to join a domain or Microsoft Entra ID among Windows 11 Pro capabilities. Consider upgrading if you need one of these features for your device or organization.
| Route | Use it when | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Store | You do not already have a Pro product key and want to buy the upgrade. | Microsoft recommends this route; Store guides you through purchase and installation. |
| Product key | You already have a valid Windows 11 Pro key. | Enter the key in Activation settings to start the edition upgrade. |
| Activation troubleshooter | The device has a Pro digital license but currently has Home installed. | The troubleshooter may offer an option to upgrade to Pro. |
Before you upgrade
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Confirm the installed edition is Windows 11 Home.
- Check that the activation state says Windows is activated. Microsoft’s documented manual upgrade steps apply to an activated Home installation; resolve Home activation first if needed.
- Decide whether you have a Pro product key, an existing Pro digital license, or need to buy the upgrade.
A product key is a 25-character code. A digital license is an entitlement that does not require entering a key. Microsoft says a Microsoft Store purchase of the Windows 11 Pro upgrade provides a digital license rather than a product key. Microsoft explains the difference between product keys and digital licenses.
Method 1: Upgrade through Microsoft Store
Microsoft Support says, “The best way to upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro is through the Microsoft Store.” The Store checks the Home installation and guides you through the purchase and installation process.

- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Expand Upgrade your edition of Windows.

- After purchase confirmation, follow the Windows prompt to install Pro and restart when requested.
- When the upgrade finishes, return to Settings > System > Activation and verify the edition and activation state.
If the upgrade section or Store button is absent, the device may already be running Pro or the edition upgrade may not be available for that installation. Check the edition on the Activation page.
Method 2: Upgrade with a Windows 11 Pro product key
Use this route if you already have a valid Windows 11 Pro key. The documented manual upgrade requires activated Windows 11 Home, and the Windows edition must match the license. See Microsoft’s Windows Home to Pro upgrade guidance.
