The recovery method depends on which of those happened.
Work or school Teams and Teams Free also use different menu names. Try the methods below in order, starting with search rather than creating a new chat.
1. Search for the hidden one-on-one chat
Hiding a chat removes it and its history from the chat list, but does not delete the conversation. You can recover it from Teams search.
- Select the Search box at the top of Teams.
- Enter the other participant’s name.
- Select the matching chat result.
- Look for the notice that the chat history is hidden. The person’s name may appear in italic text.
- Select More options (…) > Unhide.
- Select Show hidden chat history.
If the conversation does not appear in the initial results, select Filter, locate the conversation, and then select More options (…) > Unhide.

A hidden chat can also return to the chat list automatically when someone sends a new message to it. This does not happen if the chat history was removed rather than hidden.
Do not use /hide as a recovery command
In the Teams desktop app, entering /hide in the compose box and pressing Enter hides the current chat. It does not unhide a missing conversation.
2. Use Teams Go to instead of starting a new chat
A chat can appear to be missing simply because it is far down the list or the current view is filtered. Teams has a direct navigation command for finding chats and channels.
- Select the top search bar.
- Type /goto and press Enter.
- Type the chat or channel name.
- Select the correct result.
- Press Enter again to open it.
On Windows, you can also press Ctrl+G to activate Go to mode, then type the chat or channel name and select the result. This shortcut navigates to a destination; it is not a general search shortcut.
Slash commands are available in the Teams desktop app. Your organization may disable some commands through policy, and the command may not be available in Teams on the web or mobile.

Do not recreate the chat yet. Starting a new one-on-one chat does not merge it with the old conversation. In Teams Free, creating a new chat after deleting the old one produces a new conversation without the previous history for the person who deleted it.
3. Restore a hidden channel or find an archived team
If the missing item is a channel rather than a direct chat, it may have been hidden. Hiding every channel in a team can make the team disappear from the normal navigation as well.
Show a hidden channel
- Go to the bottom of the chats-and-channels list.
- Select See all your teams and channels or See all your teams.
- Filter the list by Teams with hidden channels, if necessary.
- Select the team containing the missing channel.
- Select Show next to the channel.
You can also open See all channels and select Show beside the target channel.

A hidden channel can still generate notifications for @mentions, tags, replies to followed threads, and posts. Therefore, receiving a notification for a channel that you cannot see is consistent with the channel being hidden, not deleted.
Restore an archived team
Archived teams are not deleted. Their conversations and files remain searchable, but they are read-only until the team is restored.

- Open Your teams and channels.
- Select Archived Teams.
- Locate the team.
- Select More options (…) > Restore team.
On mobile, a previously archived team may need to be added to Favorites from Teams desktop or Teams on the web before it can be viewed on the mobile device.
4. Reset or clear the Teams client cache
Use this method when a chat exists on another device or appears in notifications, but the Teams app does not display it correctly. Cache clearing can fix local display and synchronization problems. It cannot restore chat history that was removed or deleted.

New Teams on Windows: reset the app
- Open Windows Search, type settings, and open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Teams.
- Select the More options (…) button beside New Microsoft Teams.
- Select Advanced options.
- Under Reset, select Reset.
- Start Teams again.
Resetting the app deletes local app data, including personalization settings.
New Teams on Windows: delete cache files
- Right-click the Teams icon on the taskbar and select Quit.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Paste this path and select OK:
%userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams

- Delete all files and folders in that directory.
- Restart Teams.
Classic Teams on Windows
- Right-click the Teams taskbar icon and select Quit.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams
- Delete all files and folders in the directory.
- Restart Teams.
New Teams on macOS
- Quit Teams from the Dock, or press Command (⌘)-Q.
- Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
- Run these commands separately:
rm -rf ~/Library/Group\ Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams
rm -rf ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2
- Start Teams again.
Classic Teams on macOS
Quit Teams, open Terminal, and run:
rm -r ~/Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft/Teams
Then restart Teams.
5. Check whether the chat was removed instead of hidden
If none of the recovery methods work, identify the action that removed the conversation. A hidden chat is recoverable; removed or deleted chats generally are not.

For a work or school meeting chat, the meeting owner cannot delete or leave the meeting chat, while a participant can leave it.
Teams Free has one important exception for group and meeting chats: if you deleted an ongoing chat and another participant adds you back, the complete history can become visible again. That behavior does not restore a deleted one-on-one chat, and starting a new one-on-one conversation does not bring back the old messages.

What will not restore a missing Teams chat?
- Clearing the cache: fixes local client data, not a chat removed through Teams.
- Signing out and signing back in: does not restore a deleted Teams Free chat.
- Starting a new chat with the same person: opens a separate conversation and does not merge old history into it.
- Looking only in the chat list: misses hidden conversations, archived teams, and channels that were removed from the navigation.
FAQ
Can I recover a hidden Teams chat?
Yes. Search for the other participant’s name, open the result showing that the chat history is hidden, select More options (…) > Unhide, and then select Show hidden chat history.
Why can I search for a Teams chat but not see it in the chat list?
The chat may be hidden or the list may not be showing the relevant result. Open it from Search or Go to. A hidden chat can be restored with More options (…) > Unhide.
Does clearing the Teams cache restore deleted chats?
No. Cache clearing can correct display and synchronization problems in the Teams client. It does not recover chat history removed through Remove chat history or deleted in Teams Free.
What is the difference between Remove chat history and Delete chat?
Remove chat history is the current work, school, and small-business Teams action for a one-on-one chat. Delete chat is the documented Teams Free action. Removing or deleting a chat affects the user who performs the action; it does not generally erase the other participant’s copy.

Can an archived Teams team be recovered?
Yes. Open Your teams and channels, select Archived Teams, choose More options (…) beside the team, and select Restore team. Archived conversations and files remain searchable and read-only.
The Bottom Line
Start with Search and Unhide; do not recreate the conversation. If the missing item is a channel, check hidden channels and Archived Teams. Reset the client only when the problem looks local. If you used Remove chat history in work or school Teams or deleted a one-on-one chat in Teams Free, Teams does not provide a normal recovery command for that history.
