Microsoft Office is the familiar name for Microsoft’s productivity apps and software suites, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. The exact apps and services depend on the product: Microsoft 365 is a subscription, while Office 2024 is a one-time purchase of a fixed desktop suite. Free browser-based versions are also available through Microsoft 365 for the web.
What does Microsoft Office include?
Office is not one single program. It is an umbrella term for productivity apps that help with documents, spreadsheets, presentations, notes, email, and other work. Microsoft offers these apps in different products, so the Office name does not guarantee that every app is included in every license.

Microsoft 365 subscription
Microsoft 365 is a subscription service that provides current versions of its apps. Depending on the plan, it may include installed desktop apps, use across multiple devices, cloud storage, support, and other services. Microsoft also offers plans for businesses, schools, enterprises, and nonprofits; consumer plan benefits should not be assumed to apply to every subscription.

Office 2024 one-time purchase
Office Home 2024 is a one-time purchase of classic desktop Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for one PC or Mac. Office Home & Business 2024 adds Outlook. These editions do not include all Microsoft 365 services, and purchasing one does not include an upgrade to the next major release. Office LTSC
Office LTSC 2024 is the current on-premises Office release for commercial and government customers. Microsoft describes it as a one-time release with a feature set that is a subset of Microsoft 365 Apps. It does not receive the ongoing feature cadence and services of a Microsoft 365 subscription, and it is not the default consumer edition.

Free web apps
Microsoft 365 for the web provides free browser versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other apps to people with a Microsoft account. What is the difference between Microsoft 365 and Office 2024?
The main distinction is an ongoing subscription versus a fixed, one-time-purchase release. Microsoft 365 is designed around current app versions and may bundle services according to the plan. Office 2024 provides classic desktop apps in a defined edition, without all Microsoft 365 services or an included upgrade to the next major release.

One-time suites also exclude some cloud-backed features and services such as OneDrive, Exchange Online, and SharePoint Online, as described in Microsoft’s Office suites overview.
Can you use Microsoft 365 without an internet connection?
Microsoft says installed Microsoft 365 apps can work offline after activation. An internet connection still matters for setup, updates, billing, and accessing documents stored in the cloud. How do you choose an Office option?
- Choose based on where you work: Decide whether free browser access is enough or you need installed desktop apps.
- Consider payment and feature updates: A subscription suits readers who want ongoing app versions and included services; a one-time suite suits those who prefer a fixed classic release.
- Check users and devices: Limits differ by plan and edition, so verify the terms for the exact product.
- Confirm the apps: Check whether you need Outlook, Access, or another app and whether it is included for your operating system.
- Account for cloud needs: Compare storage and services such as OneDrive, Exchange Online, and SharePoint Online rather than assuming a desktop suite includes them.
- Plan for offline work: Installed apps can be useful offline after activation, but cloud-stored files and setup or maintenance still involve internet access.
Microsoft Support describes Office 2024 as providing “the essential tools you need to capture, analyze, and organize your ideas” in its Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 FAQ. Whether that fixed suite or a Microsoft 365 plan fits better depends on the apps, services, devices, and update model you need.
