To stop an unwanted Microsoft Edge desktop shortcut, first identify what it opens. For an Edge-installed website or app, open edge://apps, select its Details page, and either uninstall the app or keep it and remove only its shortcut. If a browser or work-profile shortcut keeps returning, deleting the icon may not change the setting that recreates it; on a managed PC, ask your administrator to check Edge Update policies.
Identify what the shortcut opens
Check the shortcut’s label and destination. An ordinary Edge browser icon, a shortcut for a site installed as an app, and a work-profile shortcut can have different causes and fixes.
- Site or app name: Check Edge’s installed apps at
edge://apps. - “Work – Edge” or a similar profile label: The shortcut may be associated with an Edge work profile. If it returns when you reopen Edge, deleting it once may not address what is recreating it.
- Edge browser shortcut: If it is repeatedly recreated during installation or on a managed computer, an administrator may need to review Edge Update policy settings.
Remove or keep an Edge-installed app without its desktop icon
Microsoft’s instructions for managing Edge-installed apps direct users to the app’s Details page. Microsoft’s app-management guide explains the available controls.
- In Edge, enter
edge://appsin the address bar and press Enter. - Find the app associated with the shortcut and select Details.
- If you do not want the app, choose the uninstall option. Then delete its remaining desktop shortcut if it is still present.
- If you want to keep using the app, leave it installed and remove only the unwanted desktop shortcut from Windows.
The Details page also offers options to create a desktop shortcut or pin the app to Start or the taskbar. Removing the icon is therefore different from uninstalling the app.

Ask an administrator about recurring browser shortcuts
Edge Update policies can govern desktop shortcut creation, including behavior associated with installation and update channels. If a browser shortcut returns after deletion, especially on a work or school PC, contact the person who manages the device and ask them to review the applicable Microsoft Edge Update policy documentation and the organization’s deployment settings.
Do not apply registry changes based only on a policy name found in a forum post. The exact policy scope and configuration should be verified against current Microsoft documentation by the administrator before deployment.

Consider the “Work – Edge” recurrence separately
A Microsoft Community discussion documented a “Work – Edge” shortcut that returned after users deleted it and reopened Edge. On August 29, 2023, Microsoft staff member Kelly_Y said a fix for that reported issue had been released in Edge Beta version 117.0.2045.12 and was expected in the next Stable release later that week if there were no delays. That update is a dated account of one issue, not proof that a current recurrence has the same cause. Check the Edge version and whether the device is managed before drawing conclusions. Don’t confuse a shortcut with Edge opening at sign-in
If the actual problem is that Edge opens when you sign in to Windows, that is a startup behavior—not desktop shortcut creation. Microsoft’s separate instructions use Windows Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options to change whether Edge restarts at sign-in. Those settings do not establish that a desktop shortcut will stop appearing. See Microsoft’s sign-in instructions.
