Surface Laptop Ultra is a real Windows laptop from Microsoft. Preorders are open, and Microsoft says it becomes available on October 16, 2026. The “AI supercomputer dressed as a laptop” line is a metaphor for its local AI capability, not an official product category. Microsoft reserves the word “supercomputer” for a separate deskside system, DGX Station for Windows. The performance numbers for the laptop come from Microsoft and have not yet been independently tested.

What Surface Laptop Ultra is

Microsoft describes Surface Laptop Ultra as its most powerful Surface laptop. Its official product page calls it “our most powerful Surface laptop ever, built for local AI and 3D graphics.” The laptop is built around NVIDIA RTX Spark, which Microsoft describes as combining NVIDIA AI, Blackwell RTX graphics, an NVIDIA Grace CPU with up to 20 cores, and up to 128 GB of unified memory.

The Windows Experience Blog post dated October 7, 2026 confirms that preorders are open and that the laptop becomes available on October 16. Microsoft’s US store lists several configurations, so the exact specification depends on which one you choose.

Hardware and configuration options

The US configure page lists two N1X processor options. Microsoft does not publish a per-option memory or storage split in the material available, so the table shows the processor tiers and the lineup-wide ranges separately.

What Microsoft claims about local AI

Microsoft states that the laptop can deliver up to one petaflop of AI compute and run AI models locally at up to 120 billion parameters. These are upper limits. They do not guarantee that every model of that size will fit, load, or run at a useful speed under every configuration, quantization level, software stack, or workload.

In an NVIDIA event post dated October 7, 2026, Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s head of Windows and Devices, said: “We built Surface Laptop Ultra around NVIDIA RTX Spark. With up to 128 gigs of unified memory and up to a petaflop of AI compute, you can run models on this laptop that simply don’t fit on a traditional machine.” That is a vendor executive’s statement. No independent benchmark results for the laptop are available yet, so the speed, efficiency, and model-fit figures above should be read as Microsoft’s claims.

Where “AI supercomputer” fits, and where it does not

The phrase works as a description of what a portable machine can compute locally. It is not a technical classification. Microsoft’s announcement treats DGX Station for Windows as the deskside supercomputer, a separate system designed to run frontier models locally. Surface Laptop Ultra is a laptop with a 15-inch screen and a battery-powered form factor.

Microsoft also lists a Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, which begins shipping to US customers in November. It is a different product and should not be described as the same machine as the laptop. NVIDIA’s October 7 post uses the same “deskside AI supercomputer” language for DGX Station. Both companies have a commercial interest in these products, so treat their wording as marketing unless independent testing says otherwise.

How to choose a configuration

  • Workload first. Decide which models or applications you will run. Microsoft does not say which configuration a given workload requires, and no independent test ties a workload to a specific tier.
  • Memory. Unified memory is the figure Microsoft ties most closely to the largest models. The highest listed option is 128 GB.
  • Storage. The removable SSD ranges from 512 GB to 2 TB across the lineup.
  • Processor tier. Compare the 5,120-core and 6,144-core GPU options against your budget.
  • Windows edition. Editions differ between configurations, so confirm the edition in the configuration summary before checkout.

Bottom line on the headline

Surface Laptop Ultra is a real, preorder-listed Windows laptop with a 128 GB unified-memory ceiling and a GPU-focused design. Its “AI supercomputer” label is a metaphor. The concrete figures, including one petaflop of AI compute and models up to 120 billion parameters, come from Microsoft and need independent verification before they can be treated as measured performance.
