A chemistry student has developed a clear nail-polish prototype designed to let a coated fingernail register on a capacitive touchscreen. The early formula showed promise in initial tests, but it is inconsistent when painted on a nail, loses effectiveness after a few hours outside its bottle and is not available to buy.
What is the touchscreen nail polish?
Manasi Desai, an undergraduate chemistry student at Centenary College of Louisiana, developed the prototype with research supervisor Joshua Lawrence, Ph.D. The team presented the work at the American Chemical Society’s Spring 2026 meeting on March 23, 2026. The idea could help people with long manicures or dry, calloused fingertips use phones and tablets. A phlebotomist’s reported difficulty operating a phone helped prompt the project. The American Chemical Society’s account of the project describes it as ongoing research, not a product launch.
In screening, Desai tested 13 commercially available clear-coat polishes and more than 50 additives. Forms of taurine and ethanolamine were among the most promising ingredients. The research presentation transcript says five additives produced enough conductance in dried polish to activate a touchscreen and identifies a taurine acid-base pair as the most promising. These are formulation-screening findings, not a published numerical comparison of consumer-ready products. The ACS presentation transcript provides additional details.
Why can’t a fingernail normally activate a touchscreen?
Most smartphones and tablets use capacitive touchscreens. The screen maintains a small electric field and detects changes in capacitance when a conductive object, such as a fingertip, touches it. A nail is generally not conductive enough to create the change the device recognizes, so tapping with the nail alone may not register.

How might the polish work?
The team’s proposed explanation is that acid-base chemistry in the coating lets protons move between molecules. When the polish touches the screen’s electric field, that movement may change capacitance enough for the device to interpret it as a touch. This is the researchers’ hypothesis, not a confirmed mechanism.
Does the prototype work reliably on nails?
Not yet. The ACS says the formula does not work consistently when painted on a nail. Ethanolamine evaporates quickly, and the best-performing formula reportedly loses effectiveness after a few hours outside its bottle. The researchers are seeking a more durable formulation.

Earlier conductive-polish approaches used carbon nanotubes or metallic particles. The ACS account notes that these materials can create inhalation hazards during manufacture and can limit appearance to black or metallic finishes. The team explored acid-base chemistry as an alternative, but that does not by itself establish the finished prototype’s safety for consumer use.
The researchers describe a modified taurine formula as nontoxic but slightly opaque, while also saying they want a less toxic formulation. That limited description is not a comprehensive safety assessment of a finished consumer product; no such product exists yet.

Can you buy it, and is it coming to stores?
No. The prototype is not ready for store shelves. The ACS reports that the researchers submitted a provisional patent, but its account names no licensee, manufacturing partner, retail brand or launch date. A provisional patent submission does not guarantee that the technology will be commercialized.
The cited official material does not report a quantified touchscreen recognition rate, a controlled performance comparison or independent replication. The work is an early proof of concept rather than evidence that the polish reliably replaces a fingertip across phones and tablets.

What can you use instead?
If a fingernail will not register on a touchscreen, use the pad of a finger where possible or use a standard capacitive touchscreen stylus. A stylus is an existing input accessory, not the student’s invention; the prototype described here is not currently on sale.
Desai said the envisioned clear polish could be applied over a manicure or bare nails and might also help people with fingertip calluses. That describes the project’s intended use, not a demonstrated or guaranteed benefit for users.
