Upgrade from Pixel 8 to Pixel 10 if you want a dedicated 5x telephoto camera, Qi2 magnetic wireless charging, or newer hardware. If your Pixel 8 still works well and those changes do not solve a problem for you, keeping it is reasonable: Google lists a seven-year update commitment for both phones. Compare the Pixel 10’s current local price and your actual trade-in or resale value before deciding.

What changes most from Pixel 8 to Pixel 10?

The most concrete difference is the camera system. Pixel 10 adds a dedicated 5x telephoto lens, which gives you a way to frame distant subjects that Pixel 8’s two-camera setup does not provide in the same way. Other changes include a newer processor, more listed RAM, a slightly larger display with a higher manufacturer-listed peak brightness, and Qi2-certified Pixelsnap wireless charging.

These are specification differences, not proof of a particular improvement in everyday speed, battery life, or image quality. Those outcomes depend on real-world use, and the specifications alone do not quantify them.

Should you upgrade if you care most about the camera?

Upgrade for the 5x telephoto

Choose Pixel 10 if you often photograph distant subjects and want a dedicated 5x telephoto camera. Pixel 8 has a wide and an ultrawide rear camera, with Super Res Zoom listed up to 8x; Pixel 10’s triple-camera system adds the 5x telephoto and lists Super Res Zoom up to 20x. Zoom ranges and megapixel counts do not guarantee a particular result, but the extra lens expands your framing options.

Keep Pixel 8 if its cameras already cover your needs

If you mostly take everyday wide and ultrawide photos and are satisfied with your results, the camera specifications alone may not justify replacing a working phone. The cited official materials do not provide a controlled, independent comparison of image quality between the two models.

Will Pixel 10 feel faster or last longer?

Pixel 10 lists Tensor G5 and 12 GB RAM, compared with Tensor G3 and 8 GB RAM for Pixel 8. That establishes a hardware-generation and memory difference, but not how much faster apps will open, games will run, or either phone will perform under sustained load. No independent head-to-head speed or thermal test is established by the cited material.

Google lists a typical 4,970 mAh battery for Pixel 10 and 4,575 mAh for Pixel 8, and states 24+ hours for both. Its Extreme Battery Saver estimates are up to 100 hours for Pixel 10 and up to 72 hours for Pixel 8. These are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee or a controlled comparison of everyday endurance. If your Pixel 8 battery has degraded, its present condition is more useful to your decision than the original capacity figure.

The brightness figures are manufacturer specifications rather than independent measurements, so treat them as a listed difference, not a promise about visibility in every situation.

For wired charging, Google says Pixel 10 can reach up to 55% in about 30 minutes when using a 30W USB-C PPS charger or higher, sold separately. For Pixel 8, Google says up to 50% in about 30 minutes with a Google 30W USB-C charger, also sold separately. Actual charging varies with charger, temperature, and battery state.

Does Pixel 8 still have enough software support?

Google lists seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates for Pixel 10, and seven years of OS, security, and Feature Drop updates for Pixel 8. Pixel 10 has the later-starting support window, but Pixel 8 is not automatically unsupported simply because it is the older model. The cited specifications do not give exact end dates, so they do not support a precise calendar cutoff here.

How to make the keep-or-upgrade decision

  • Upgrade now: You want the dedicated 5x telephoto, Qi2 magnetic charging, or the newer hardware, and the net price is worth those benefits to you.
  • Keep Pixel 8: It remains reliable, its camera and charging meet your needs, and you do not have a concrete reason to replace it.
  • Check the numbers first: Compare the Pixel 10 price for your market and storage configuration against the current trade-in or resale value of your Pixel 8. No current Pixel 8 market value or trade-in offer is established by the cited sources.
  • Consider battery condition: If endurance is your main concern, assess how your Pixel 8 performs now rather than assuming Pixel 10’s larger listed capacity will translate into a specific real-world gain.

For the US, Google lists Pixel 10 at a $799 starting price; that does not establish today’s local price, the price of a higher-storage model, or the amount you could recover for a Pixel 8. Check the current offer and calculate the net cost before purchasing.
