A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores data in a square pattern. A compatible camera or scanner reads and decodes it; depending on the encoded data and the software, scanning may show text, open a web address, or offer another action. QR codes connect physical objects and places to digital information, help identify products, and support supply-chain tracking. Check a link’s destination before opening it: the code itself does not prove a site is safe.
What is a QR code?
QR Code is a type of matrix barcode: its data is represented by a pattern of small squares called modules. DENSO WAVE developed it in 1994, designing it to hold substantial information in a compact area and to be read quickly from different orientations. The three prominent position-detection patterns help a scanner locate and orient the symbol.
QR stands for “Quick Response,” reflecting the design’s emphasis on fast reading. The format is standardized; the current published international standard listed by ISO is ISO/IEC 18004:2024, edition 4, published in August 2024. It specifies encoding methods, symbol formats and dimensions, error correction, a reference decoding algorithm, and production-quality requirements. ISO/IEC 18004:2024
How does a QR code work?
- The code encodes data. Depending on the chosen encoding, a QR symbol can contain numerals, letters, Japanese scripts, symbols, binary data, or control codes.
- A camera or scanner captures the pattern. The position-detection patterns help the reader find and orient the symbol.
- Software decodes the data. The scanner or phone then determines what to do with it. A code might display text or present a link, but opening a website or taking another action depends on the encoded content and the device’s software.
DENSO WAVE lists maximum capacities of 7,089 numeric characters, 4,296 alphanumeric characters, 2,953 8-bit bytes, or 1,817 Kanji characters. What are QR codes used for?
- Linking to online information: A code can direct a phone to a webpage or other digital content associated with a product, place, or service.
- Product identification: Businesses can use QR codes within product-identification systems.
- Supply-chain tracking: QR codes can carry data used to identify or track products as they move through a supply chain.
- Everyday access and transactions: People also encounter them on menus, parking-payment instructions, and event or travel access materials. The exact result depends on what the code contains and how the reader handles it.
GS1 QR Code is an application of the QR Code symbology that uses GS1-specific data conventions. It is intended for uses such as product identification and supply-chain information, rather than being merely a different visual type of code. A business adopting it needs to consider the data conventions, scanners, and downstream systems its workflow requires; support can vary across readers and business processes. GS1: 2D barcodes
Can a damaged QR code still be read?
QR codes include error correction, which can help recover data when part of a symbol is damaged. DENSO WAVE lists approximate codeword-restoration levels of 7% (L), 15% (M), 25% (Q), and 30% (H). Those figures describe error-correction levels, not a safe allowance for covering or damaging the same percentage of the printed image. Are QR codes safe to scan?
Not automatically. A QR code can point to a legitimate page or to a deceptive site that tries to steal information; the FTC also warns that malicious codes may be used to deliver malware. Scams can involve a code placed over a legitimate parking-meter code or an unexpected message designed to make someone act quickly. FTC consumer alert on QR-code scams
- Before opening a link, inspect the URL preview and check for misspellings or substituted letters.
- Be wary of unexpected codes, especially when a message pressures you to act urgently.
- If a request might be legitimate, contact the organization using a website or phone number you already trust rather than relying on the code or message.
