Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →First, check Google Earth’s image-loading indicator. If it is still incomplete, the imagery may not have finished streaming; if it reaches 100% and remains blurry, Google says high-resolution imagery may not be available for that location. The steps below help distinguish a loading or display problem from the limits of the imagery itself.
Check whether the image has finished loading
Look at the status indicator at the bottom of the Google Earth image. Give it time to finish. If it remains incomplete after several minutes, Google identifies the internet connection, firewall settings, and graphics-card drivers as possible causes. Check those before concluding that the computer has a hardware fault. Google Earth Pro also requires an internet connection and compatible graphics hardware; see Google Earth Pro’s installation and system requirements.
If the indicator reaches 100% and the image still looks blurry, Google’s guidance is that high-resolution data may not be available for that location. A completed load does not mean every place has equally detailed imagery.
Try Google Earth Pro troubleshooting steps
If you use the desktop Google Earth Pro application, these steps can rule out common causes. They cannot create detail that is absent from the available imagery.

#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Turn off Places-panel layers. In the Places panel, switch off the layers or overlays and see whether the underlying image becomes clearer. An overlay can obscure imagery.
- Clear the disk cache. Open Google Earth Pro’s Preferences on Windows or Mac and clear the disk cache. Google says cache files are recreated as needed; clearing them is a troubleshooting step, not a way to obtain higher-resolution imagery.
- Turn off anisotropic filtering. In the 3D View settings, disable anisotropic filtering and check the image again.
- Check the graphics display mode if the problem persists. Google documents Safe Mode for turning off advanced rendering. On Windows, Google Earth Pro’s Repair Tool can switch between OpenGL and DirectX; Google cautions that OpenGL may not work with some graphics hardware or driver software. Linux and Mac support OpenGL only, according to Google’s display-settings guidance.
- Check the graphics-card driver. If the display issue continues, Google recommends updating the graphics-card driver. The official troubleshooting steps are in Fix Google Earth errors.
Tell limited resolution from a loading or display problem
Use the loading indicator and the results of the Pro troubleshooting steps to interpret what you see:
- The indicator is incomplete: investigate the connection, firewall, and graphics driver. The image may still be loading.
- The indicator is complete, and turning off overlays or changing display settings helps: the issue may have been related to an overlay or local graphics display.
- The indicator is complete, but the image remains blurry: high-resolution imagery may not be available for that location. Google Earth Community’s Frequently Asked Questions also explains that imagery detail varies by area and that zooming beyond an image’s optimal resolution can make it look pixelated.
Zooming in cannot recover detail beyond the resolution of the image being displayed. No setting, cache reset, or generic hardware upgrade can guarantee more detailed source imagery.

Understand imagery dates separately from image clarity
Google Earth imagery is collected over time by providers and platforms; it is not real-time. Some displayed imagery has one acquisition date, while a mosaic can combine images captured over days or months. For a date range, Google says the displayed date is the oldest possible date in that range. See How images are collected.
An old image and a blurry image are different issues. The displayed date helps explain when imagery was collected; the loading indicator and available-resolution guidance help explain why an image looks unclear.
