1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCompare estimated intake and exhaust airflow to see whether your PC fan setup is biased toward positive, negative, or roughly neutral pressure. The result is a planning aid—not a pressure measurement: fan speed, filters, radiators, case openings, and fan placement all affect the airflow your build actually gets.
How the case pressure calculator works
Enter the estimated airflow of the fans bringing air into the case and the fans exhausting it. The tool compares those totals: more estimated intake than exhaust indicates a positive bias; more exhaust than intake indicates a negative bias; similar totals indicate a roughly balanced setup. Use the comparison to reason about a layout, not as a prediction of measured pressure.
Fan specifications usually describe performance under particular conditions, and a fan’s listed free-air CFM does not tell you how much air will pass through a completed case. Filters, radiators, panels, grilles, and other restrictions affect flow. Fan speed and orientation matter too. XPG discusses the effects of case restrictions and fan arrangement in its PC case air pressure guide, while Corsair distinguishes airflow-oriented fans for open mounting from static-pressure fans for restricted spaces in its AF120 Performance Edition specifications.
There is no universal intake-CFM target or exact pressure percentage established by the cited guidance. The useful question is whether your particular build moves air effectively while keeping temperatures, noise, and dust manageable.

Positive, negative, and neutral pressure
| Airflow balance | What it means | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Positive | Estimated intake exceeds estimated exhaust. | If intake air is filtered, this bias can help reduce dust entering through unfiltered gaps. |
| Negative | Estimated exhaust exceeds estimated intake. | Replacement air may be drawn through unfiltered openings, potentially carrying dust into the case. |
| Neutral or balanced | Estimated intake and exhaust are similar. | A balanced flow can be a sensible starting point; actual results still depend on the case and fan arrangement. |
These labels describe the relationship between incoming and outgoing airflow, not a guarantee about temperatures or dust. XPG and Intel both describe slightly positive or balanced airflow as a practical dust-control starting point, particularly when intake air passes through filters. Intel’s guidance is in PC Cooling: The Importance of Keeping Your PC Cool.
How to choose a starting fan layout
Conventional air-cooled tower
Start with front fans as intake and a rear fan as exhaust. Bottom fans are generally intake, while top fans are generally exhaust. Noctua’s example layouts begin with two front intakes and one rear exhaust for a three-fan setup; it then adds a front intake for four fans and a rear-positioned top exhaust for five. These are examples to adapt to your case, not required configurations. See Noctua’s airflow setup guide.

- HIGH STATIC PRESSURE: Efficient even with resistance – the generated airflow easily penetrates dense radiators, narrow perforated panels and mesh structures and ensures reliable cooling
- PWM CONTROL WITH WIDE SPEED RANGE: The speed can be progressively adjusted up to 3000 rpm via the 4-pin PWM connection – the fan stops completely at less than 5% PWM
- PRECISE MANUFACTURING FOR MAXIMUM SMOOTH RUNNING: Minimal gaps, automatic balancing and high-precision measurement noticeably reduce vibrations – for quiet, efficient and long-lasting performance
- SMOOTH-RUNNING FLUID DYNAMIC BEARING (FDB): The self-lubricating bearing minimizes noise during operation – ideal for quiet, efficient cooling and a long, reliable service life
- NEW FAN BLADE DESIGN FOR MORE PERFORMANCE: The redesigned rotor blades offer an optimal balance of performance and low noise – especially efficient at low speeds
Build with a radiator
Radiator placement changes which component receives the coolest incoming air. Noctua recommends front or side radiator intake when prioritizing lower CPU temperatures in most setups, and top radiator exhaust when prioritizing lower GPU temperatures. Arrange the remaining fans to support a coherent path through the case; the best choice depends on the specific components and chassis.
Choose fans for their mounting conditions
Before adding fans, check the case’s supported sizes and positions. Then consider the restriction each fan faces: an open panel, filter, radiator, or tight grille. Corsair describes its AF120 Performance Edition as an airflow fan for open mounting and points to static-pressure fans for tight spaces. Its product page lists 63.47 CFM airflow, 1.1 mm-H2O static pressure, 1,650 RPM, and 30 dBA at 12 V for that specific model. These are product specifications, not a general measure of the airflow your case will achieve.

- Streamlined Fan Connections: Daisy-chain multiple fans together and control them all through just one 4-pin PWM connector and one +5V ARGB connector.
- Lighting Made Easy: Eight LEDs per fan shine bright with customisable lighting through your motherboard’s built-in ARGB control (requires compatible motherboard).
- Precise PWM Speeds: Set your fan speeds up to 2,100 RPM while providing up to 72.8 CFM airflow to your system.
- CORSAIR AirGuide Technology: Anti-vortex vanes direct airflow at your hottest components for concentrated cooling, pushing air in the direction you need when mounted to a radiator or heatsink.
- High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.
Compare fan size, operating speed, airflow, static pressure, and noise together. A fan’s maximum specification alone does not establish the best fit for a restricted mount or a quiet build.
How to check whether the setup is working
- Check CPU and GPU temperatures under the workloads you actually use, rather than relying on the calculator’s balance alone.
- Listen for noise at the fan speeds your system uses. A layout that cools well only at an objectionably loud speed may not suit your priorities.
- Inspect filters and case openings over time to see where dust collects, and clean filters as needed.
- Check that fans are oriented as intended and that intake and exhaust paths are not blocked by cables, panels, or component placement.
Intel describes careful smoke observation near vents as a visual aid for seeing airflow direction, not as a pressure test. Do not use a flame or ash near computer hardware. Temperature, noise, and dust observations across your own build are more useful than treating a visual check as a measurement.

What to adjust if airflow seems poor
- If dust is entering through unfiltered gaps, check whether exhaust outweighs intake and whether filtered intake paths are available.
- If temperatures remain high, inspect restrictions and fan direction, then consider whether the CPU or GPU needs a different airflow path.
- If adding intake creates a large surplus, do not assume more is always better. XPG cautions that excessive positive bias can impede flow or allow warm air to accumulate.
- If a fan sits behind a radiator or tight filter, choose or tune it with that restriction in mind rather than judging it only by free-air CFM.
Thermaltake notes that pressure categories can matter more in some specialized, cramped, or open-frame cases than in others. Noctua likewise emphasizes that airflow has no one-size-fits-all layout; compare the intake/exhaust balance, restrictions, cooling priorities, dust filtering, and noise for the case you actually own.
