How to add or change a reaction in Outlook

Open the email you want to react to.

Select the reactions button near the top of the message window.

Choose a reaction from the gallery. Microsoft’s Outlook reactions guide describes this control and the available behavior.

To change your reaction, select a different one. Your new choice replaces your earlier reaction.

Your reaction appears below the message controls near the top of the message window. Point to it to see who reacted and which reaction they chose. Reactions to messages you sent or received can also appear in Outlook Notifications.
Who can see your Outlook reaction?

What accounts and Outlook versions support reactions?
Microsoft documents reactions for individuals using a work or school account in Outlook with a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription. Its support article does not identify which subscription plans qualify, so a Microsoft 365 account alone does not establish eligibility.
For reactions to work fully, both the person reacting and the message sender need Exchange Online mailboxes. Microsoft says reactions also work between people in different organizations when both are within Exchange Online. If the sender is not on Exchange Online, the reaction is sent as a fallback email instead of behaving as a full reaction in the conversation.
Microsoft says the feature rolled out across Outlook for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and the web as of September 2023. For users on the Semi-Annual channel, Microsoft identifies Version 2308. Reactions are not available in GCC High, DoD, or Gallatin (China) environments, and Exchange shared mailboxes are not supported.
Does this work with Outlook.com or a personal account?
Microsoft’s Outlook on the web guidance documents a Like button. Its broader reactions guidance describes the qualifying work or school account requirement, but does not establish whether personal Outlook.com accounts have access to the broader reaction gallery. Microsoft’s separate email creation and reply guide covers the general Outlook on the web email interface.

If you do not see the reactions button

Confirm that you opened an email in Outlook and look near the top of the message window for the reactions control.

Check whether you are using a qualifying work or school account and whether your organization’s environment supports the feature. Microsoft lists shared mailboxes, GCC High, DoD, and Gallatin (China) as exceptions.

Keep in mind that the Microsoft documentation does not name the eligible subscription plans. If your account appears eligible but the control is missing, your organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator can confirm account and environment support.
