These are separate display choices, so you can combine the ones you prefer. The steps below match Apple’s current guidance; menu names and feature availability can vary by macOS version.
Choose which parts of Mail you want to change
“Classic” can mean a simpler inbox, unthreaded replies, a visible sidebar, or a different amount of message text in the list. Mail controls these independently. Use the table to identify the setting that matches what you miss.

Hide Mail Categories or show every message
Mail’s category buttons are labeled Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions. Apple says categories are available in Mail on macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later. If you do not see them, your macOS version or Mail layout may differ. See Apple’s instructions for changing or troubleshooting Mail categories.
- In Mail, open View Options in the toolbar, or open the View menu.
- Deselect Show Mail Categories to hide the category buttons.
If you want to keep categories but stop filtering the inbox to one of them, click the selected category to clear the filter and show All Mail. Apple describes the four categories in What’s new in Mail on Mac?

Choose whether replies appear in threads
Conversation grouping is independent of categories. To list replies individually, choose View > Organize by Conversation to turn off grouping. To keep conversations grouped but reveal every message in them, choose View > Expand All Conversations. Apple documents these options in its guide to viewing conversations.
Show the mailbox sidebar
If your mailbox list on the left has disappeared, choose View > Show Sidebar. You can also press Control-Command-S. Apple lists both options in its guidance for when the sidebar or Favorites bar is not visible.

Adjust message-list previews and display
- In Mail, choose Mail > Settings > Viewing.
- Change List Preview to set how many lines of a message appear in the message list.
- Review the other options on the Viewing pane for message display, conversation order, and unread-message appearance in column layout.
Apple’s Mail viewing settings guide identifies Mail version 16.0 and macOS 26 in its URL. If your controls are named differently or absent, check the instructions for your installed macOS release.
Set familiar fonts and colors
To change the message-list typeface, message font, or quoted-text colors, choose Mail > Settings > Fonts & Colors. Adjust the specific font and size controls there to suit your preference. Apple’s guide to changing fonts and colors covers these appearance settings.

What these changes can—and cannot—restore
The controls above change how the current Mail app presents messages; they do not install an earlier Mail application. Apple’s reviewed guidance explains display settings and features, but does not describe rolling Mail itself back to an older version. If by “old Mail” you mean an older app rather than a familiar layout, these settings will not accomplish that.
